Originally in the obsolete form of Schrittschuh (“step shoe, pace shoe”), from Schritt + Schuh, an old compound already attested in Old High German scritescuoh. Remodelled in modern German by association with Schlitten (“sleigh”). Compare Swedish skridsko.
