From Persian خاتون (xâtun), ultimately probably from Sogdian [script needed] (γwtʾynh /⁠xwatēn, xutēn⁠/, “queen”) either directly or via Common Turkic *xātun.

1. (now historical) A lady or wife in certain Central Asian communities.
