From Proto-Celtic *teɸents, from the present participle of Proto-Indo-European *tep- (“to be warm”) (compare Latin tepēns).

This adjective and éola (“wise, knowledgeable”) are the only two irregularly inflecting adjectives in the entire language, when irregular comparatives and superlatives are discounted. té seems to have a unique nt-stem declension, with only two forms attested that fit such a paradigm.
