ى • (-ā)

1. Only written in the final position, transliterated ā. Called أَلِف مَقْصُورَة (ʔalif maqṣūra, “limited, restricted alif”) or أَلِف لَيِّنَة (ʔalif layyina, “flexible alif”). In the rare case of a rasm version of Quran, it is the yāʾ version.
   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 19:30:

     قَالَ إِنِّی عَبۡدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِیَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِی نَبِیࣰّا

     Jesus declared, “I am truly a servant of Allah. He has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be a prophet.

Suffix

1. used to form feminine adjectives

   دُنْيَا (dunyā)

   قُصْوَى (quṣwā)

   مَلْأَى (malʔā)

Usage notes

• Represents the back vowel phoneme /ə/, unless a small ء (hamza) was placed in the beginning of the word. In Kazakh the Hamza marks that all vowels in the following word are fronted. If ى is the initial letter of a word and is representing a front vowel, it is combined with the hamza and the variant ٸ is used.
