Alternative forms

Often called the 'open-tailed g'. Both open-tail ⟨ɡ⟩ and double-loop ⟨g⟩ are acceptable in IPA transcription, but the open-tailed ɡ is traditional. Similarly, the superscript letter may be ⟨ᵍ⟩ but is more commonly ⟨ᶢ⟩.

2. (superscript ⟨ᶢ⟩, IPA) [ɡ]-onset (prestopping / preocclusion / preplosion), [ɡ]-release, [ɡ]-coloring, or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ɡ].

   (on a click consonant) A voiced velar as opposed to voiced uvular click; specifically:

   velar dental click ⟨ᶢǀ⟩ (old-style ⟨ᶢʇ⟩),

   velar alveolar click ⟨ᶢǃ⟩ (old-style ⟨ᶢʗ⟩),

   velar palatal click ⟨ᶢǂ⟩ (old-style ⟨ᶢ𝼋⟩),

   velar lateral click ⟨ᶢǁ⟩ (old-style ⟨ᶢʖ⟩),

   velar bilabial click ⟨ᶢʘ⟩,

   velar retroflex click ⟨ᶢ𝼊⟩ or ad hoc ⟨ᶢ‼⟩ (old-style ⟨ᶢψ⟩).

   Placement after the click letter – e.g. ⟨ǂᶢ⟩ – may imply an audible velar release.
