Inherited from Middle French œil, from Old French oil, uel, ueil (plural olz, ialz), from Vulgar Latin oclus, from Latin oculus. Doublet of oculus, a borrowing. Cognate with Spanish ojo, Portuguese olho, Galician ollo, Italian occhio, Romanian ochi and Catalan ull. For the phonetic development of the plural, see yeux.
