The Barbarians of Ancient Europe deals with the reality of the indigenous peoples of Europe, in contrast to many publications that explore these peoples in the context of the Greek idea of “barbarians” as the “Other.” These varied groups – Thracians, Scythians, Celts, Germans, Etruscans, and other peoples of Italy, the Alps, and beyond – had contact with one another and with Greek culture during its flowering. Images on the spectacular gold and silver objects buried in royal tombs show how the horse-riding nomads and the barbarian women warriors known in antiquity as Amazons saw themselves. Archaeological discoveries show how they dressed, what they ate and drank, where they lived, and how they honored their dead kings with barbaric splendor and human sacrifices, allowing us to change, correct, or confirm the picture given in Greek and Roman literature.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an amazing collection of essays and an astonishing illumination of what was happening in Central Europe during the years of Greek civilization. The word “barbarian” will never lose its detrimental quality, but at least, thanks to this volume, one is better informed as to what was really happening." --Ancient History Bulletin Online Reviews

“Overall, the volume is well-planned and consistent. It will be a welcome addition to university and personal libraries. There is much dialogue between individual chapters, and in general they are well-written and clear with a large number of illustrations.” – Bryn Mawr Classical Review

“This collection will prove especially useful for readers approaching these topics for the first time, while specialists too will find much of interest.” – The Journal of Hellenic Studies

The scholarship is outstanding, the end notes and bibliographies are extensive yet this books reads so well and is so interesting I keep it on the bedside table to read and re-read. The interesting chapters of the book, discussing our origins from the people of ancient Europe who had relationships with the Greek culture, stimulate me every day. After all these years of starting "from the Greeks" Larissa Bonfonte, known to me as an Etruscan scholar, has herself written several chapters and edited a book with contributions from renown scholars, from the perspective of the Etruscans and peoples of ancient Italy, the Sythians, the Gauls, the Hittites, and the Celts. The life, manners, customs and beliefs of the ancients, their interaction with each other, the interaction of past and present, explain who we are! As Larissa writes, "In our own book on the barbarians of ancient Europe we look for the reality and relationships of the lives, beliefs and customs of these ancestors, and along the way we often encounter our own world." Please read this book and enjoy the encounter.

The book is handsome with wonderful maps, color and black and white illustrations and charts. The book can be studied and at the same time, picked up and read with ease.

I am writing my first time ever review on Amazon to congratulate and thank Larissa Bonfonte and the contributors for this wonderful book which is changing and enriching my life.

The Barbarians of Ancient Europe: Realities and Interactions

This is a new, exciting, and well-written book that comprises a collection of thirteen essays dealing with the peoples of Ancient Europe, such as Scythians, Thracians, Celts, Etruscans, Ancient Germans and Goths. Written by the leading scholars in the field, archaeologists, historians, art historians, and philologists, the essays are dedicated to specific issues within particular barbarian groups, as well as to the problems of interaction between the barbarians and Greeks and Romans.
