Gorilla Habituation, officially started in 2014, the program initiated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The only gorilla family accessible for gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi is the Bikingi gorilla group, which consists of 14 individuals.
Gorilla habituation offers tourists an extended duration of 4 hours to interact with mountain gorillas. This gorilla habituation experience is opposed to the usual gorilla trekking activity which is limited to just 1 hour. The process of gorilla habituation typically requires a duration of between two and three years for completion. Throughout this period, researchers consistently visited a gorilla group that has not yet been recognized on a daily basis. Over time, they acquire knowledge about the specific gorilla and its habits, ultimately assigning a name to each particular gorilla. After confirming the readiness of the mountain gorillas, the researchers initiate a simulated activity in which a select group of individuals, such as scientists and media, begin visiting them. Once a gorilla troop successfully completes the simulated exercise, it becomes available for trekking.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to approximately 19 habituated mountain gorilla families across all four gorilla trekking sectors. However, only one family, known as the Bikingi gorilla group, consisting of 14 semi-habituated mountain gorillas, is available for the gorilla habituation experience. This group is located in the Rushaga sector, which is situated in the southern part of Bwindi. The gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Forest National Park is available throughout the year, but the best time to go for gorilla habituation experience is over the dry season, which is also considered the peak season. This period, which falls in the months of June, July, August, September, December, January, and February, experiences less rainfall, resulting in dry and passable access roads and trekking trails. Consequently, gorilla habituation becomes easier compared to the rainy season when the trails are muddy and slippery, making the process more challenging.
