Celebrating a Decade in Print!

Kat

January 9, 2025

I can’t quite believe we've reached a whole decade of Rock n Roll Bride in print! What started as a blog to document my own wedding (back in 2008!) evolved into a yearly print annual, then was taken over by a major publishing company while we launched the bi-monthly version. I quickly realised I liked being my own boss too much though so that didn’t last long – I’m proud to say this has been a self-funded, self-published, completely independent magazine since mid-2015!

Kitty Loves Love

Jaymin and Sean decided to elope in their hometown of Perth, Australia, before heading to Europe for five weeks of travelling and going to rave festivals! They got hitched on a weeknight in their favourite local park, with their rescue greyhound, Moni, and just three witnesses. Afterwards, they popped into the city with their photographer where they basically recreated their first date - heading to an old school Miami style bar, to the arcades to play the first game they played together, then for ice cream just after sunset. They then met up with their mates again for dinner!

10 Unconventional Celebrity Weddings from the Last 10 Years

Kat

January 7, 2025

There have been some classic alt celeb weddings over the years—Gwen Stefani's dip-dyed pink John Galliano dress changed my brain chemistry in 2002, and Avril Lavigne's black Monique Lhuillier in 2013 made me wish I'd been brave enough to wear black for my own wedding. SJP also wore black when she eloped with Matthew Broderick in 1997, and who can forget Britney's shotgun 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander while wearing jeans and a baseball cap? Iconic behaviour.

Patience and Bethany chose The Ripped Bodice, a bookshop in LA, as their unique wedding venue. The venue had never hosted a wedding before, which was precisely why they loved it. This wasn’t the only unconventional aspect of their day. From the lack of a theme or specific colour palette to swapping a DJ and dancing for board games, the celebration was all about what Patience and Bethany truly wanted.

I always love writing for Rock n Roll Bride in January. I love picturing all the new readers, who got engaged over the holidays, giddily unwrapping their first issue and settling down with a hot chocolate by the fire. I love thinking about some of our more seasoned readers, who can now start saying that their wedding is “this year” instead of “next year” … (Eeee! So exciting!) And I love having a chance to remind every Rock n Roll Bride reader out there exactly WHY they have chosen this wonderful magazine as their sparkly little helper on their wedding-planning journey.

How to Bring A Little Colour to your Wedding

November 26, 2024

Gone are the days of monochrome matrimonial monotony being the only option. This is your guide on how to colour outside the traditional lines. There was a time when the only colour in your wedding would be ‘something blue’. Suits were drab, dresses were white; as were the tablecloths, the candles, the cake. We even had a name for it: ‘The Big White Wedding’. A celebration of love, defined by its lack of colour.

Hello and welcome to the year 2024, where anyone with even a fractionally-open mind will throw their arms up and rejoice in the knowledge that any two consenting adults can tie the knot, regardless of their race, gender or religious beliefs. In this rainbow-obsessed issue, we feel it would be remiss of us not to take a moment to raise our LGBTQIA+ Pride flags high above our heads, and shriek at the very top of our lungs, that here at Rock n Roll Bride magazine… LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE IS LOOOOVE.

When Hannah and Nate decided to tie the knot, they knew they didn't have a lot to spend, but that wasn't going to stop them having the wedding they wanted. Both line cooks, they were lucky enough to be offered the restaurant where the bride works as their venue, which they used after hours. Everything else was homemade and their secondhand outfits were pieced together from pieces found at Poshmark and Goodwill, totalling less than $50 combined!

After an eight-year engagement, Eli and Jake finally tied the knot in the stunning Rocky Mountains at Grand Lake Lodge. For them, waiting wasn’t about laziness or indecision—it was about finding the right moment, with the right people, and for the right reasons. “I used to tell people we were just lazy", Eli shared, "but after we had our wedding, I realised that we had just not been ready yet. I’m glad we waited. It led us to the most magical day of our lives.”

When Mariela and Mat, who met in 2018 at a tattoo convention, decided to tie the knot, they knew that while they didn't have a particular theme or vison in mind, they wanted something that incorporated their love for the desert, retro decor and tattoos. They found the perfect spot in downtown Las Vegas at the Sure Thing Chapel, featuring an officiant with a twist: Hellvis, the chapel’s resident 'spooky and campy Elvis' evil twin'. Everything else just fell into place after that.

Annina and Jan, who met at a rock and metal club, quickly discovered their mutual love for the same music scene. Once they did, their lives began to revolve around these shared experiences, so it felt natural that their wedding would take on a similar vibe. "We were both surprised we hadn’t met sooner,” Annina told us. “We’ve been to so many festivals and concerts, it felt like we were always meant to find each other.”

Monica and Dominic’s wedding at The Grove in Las Vegas brought a medieval touch to a venue known for its romantic almond orchard. While most couples embrace the venue’s natural elegance, Monica and Dominic transformed the space into a scene filled with gothic magic and Celtic traditions. “We are both ‘Elder Emos,’ and I have an Irish/Celtic background,” Monica told us. “So we wanted something that really reflected our roots and personalities.”

When Kira and McKinna set their sights on Joshua Tree for their wedding, they knew they wanted something as eclectic and dynamic as their relationship. “Joshua Tree is a gorgeous place, and it’s also very eclectic,” Kira says. “We wanted our guests to experience both sides of this, so we selected Indian Cove Amphitheater for our ceremony and a private music and art venue called FurstWurld for the reception. Both places are special to us as climbers, music lovers, and seasonal high desert dwellers.”

December 11, 2024

I recently saw a Thread where the poster pointed out that luxury wedding workshop shoots often exclude marginalised couples or those with tattoos, piercings, or other alternative styles. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how accurate that is! As you know, I’m all about celebrating alternative shoots and weddings (obviously!), but just because someone doesn’t appear to be straight, white, or fit a certain body ideal doesn’t mean they aren’t interested in the luxury end of the wedding market.

It isn't often that you see a bride choose a black wedding gown contrasted against a vineyard location, but that's exactly what Sophia wanted when she married Dan. The wedding was in October, the both autumnal weather and spooky season influenced their day. They had beautiful burnt orange floral pieces, metallic bridesmaid dresses, the skull and skeleton decorations, and they even used dried branches as their wedding arch.
