Black Friday brought the best PSVR 2 sale we’ve seen yet, and even though Black Friday is gone, Sony has kept the sale rolling. You can still get the PSVR 2 Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle for just $350, a 42% discount over the usual price.

Sony dropped its Black Friday PSVR 2 sale well ahead of the actual day… and now the deal has continued well beyond Cyber Monday.

The $350 deal on the PSVR 2 Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle is the best price we’ve seen for the bundle yet, compared to a usual price of $600. The sale has led to a huge sales spike for the headset on Amazon US, pushing it up nearly 20-fold compared to the months prior.

Though these are great numbers for PSVR 2 historically, Quest has been pushing around 10x more sales volume on Amazon US during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

The amount of the discount (42% off), the length of the sale, and the fact that the non-bundle of the headset is seemingly not available on Amazon US at the moment, suggests there might be an ulterior strategy at play. One the one hand it’s possible Sony is dumping stock. This is probably not because its discontinuing the headset, but there could be a new model (with minor changes, as they have done before) or new bundle on the way, or they’re preparing for a permanent price cut. On the other hand, perhaps they’re just happy with the performance of the sale and want to keep it going.

The manufacturing dates on PSVR2 being sold in this sale are more recent (like this summer) so I don't think they are clearing stock as much as just growing their install base among the strongest season of software support VR industry has had to date.

  • Jay

Can somebody explain why the reviewer might suggest that a sale like this to move stock and the taking away of the non-bundle, could be necessary in order to permanently reduce the price? I'm a bit confused. Could he be thinking, "reduce" as in to below the current sale price? No offense to the reviewer, but this article is poorly written, there's even a grammatical mistake thrown in there for good measure. His ideas and insight are probably sound, which is why I find this interesting.

It's the typical backhanded slap without just letting other headsets have their day in the sun. Can't just report on those devices only without bringing Quest into the conversation.

"Sales are great for PS VR 2 on console and is a big improvement from what they were. But look at the Quest platform overall sales…"

"This game is exclusive to PS VR 2 or PC. But look at how many games the Quest has that you can play over other devices. It's on sale right now with Batman as a freebie. We even have links down below and ads of it right in other headsets articles."

" We're not trying to be biased at all and wish to be fair and balanced. But we'll just throw out pure speculation and downplay any uptick."

I have a Quest. But all you have to do is ask why does it have to be always mentioned in a Pico, PC headset, PS VR 2, Vision Pro, etc articles? Do the writers want universal acceptance of VR and AR, PC and stand alone where they are all doing well in relation to where they are being sold? Or do they just want one particular device taking a foothold? I wonder sometimes because I've never seen negative articles on what could be improved on what they are pushing so as to not lose access to that very same company.

      • Arno van Wingerde

Come on! Ben has written enough critical articles about Meta's policies, which are often as baffling as Sony's antics. So, the aim is not so much to raise universal acceptance, nor pushing any particular device, but report on what is happening and comment on that. I would say that everybody commenting here has a thing for VR, unless they purely come here to troll. Sure, some people will always insert the superiority of their device or company, or their hatred of other groups (hello ViRgin!) and you may need to filter their comments a bit, but universal praise for even the worst piece of shovelware just because it is VR will not help the VR development along either.

        • ApocalypseShadow

The article mentioned pure speculation which in itself is a form of sabotage. Sony might be dumping stock as they might be bringing out a newer model? Where's the rumors, sources? Where's that guy Gurman who seems to be the only source of rumor besides that Apple rumor guy? There isn't any information.

When a writer posts unsubstantiated comments, they are in effect, sabotaging sales. Someone who has a PS5 who's interested could come into the article and see his comments and think that well, there's a newer model coming. "I don't want to buy this dumped model, I'll just wait for the next release."

What if there's no release of a new one? Why did that sale not happen? It would be because of his comments. Look over at mixed news VR. They made an article on his very article here on road and are spreading the same speculation. Instead of mixed doing research themselves and being game journalists, they are spreading the same reckless information. So, viewers going there would also hesitate to buy thinking there's a newer model coming. I worked retail. If you told customers a newer product was coming and that a company was dumping something, that gives that customer the idea that it's possibly defective, the company is discontinuing the product or give them the idea to wait it out hoping for that newer device being better.

Mentioning another product that is selling well that isn't a device that works for PS5 is another form of sabotaging Sony's push to sell more devices. Even if he's not trying to do that, his comments are doing just that.

Quest will automatically have its own articles. It doesn't need to be mentioned in other devices articles. It's a nice device with it's own problems of not getting AAA game support. And the only company that was a huge supporter of VR, Ubisoft, has backed off making VR games after releasing an exclusive for Quest. But I thought Quest 2 and 3 are over 20 million in sales? With 50 billion in losses to push the platform. But Facebook is the only one with Batman. There's no EA, no Namco, no Capcom, no Rockstar as that game was cancelled. Was GTA mentioned here in an article that it was cancelled. I sure don't remember seeing it as I come here daily. But that's another topic.

Anyway, you might not think his comments in the article is doing that. But it is. The fact that his speculation without facts has already spread to other websites is not helping. In my opinion.

          • Arno van Wingerde

The reason that Ben is speculating is that Sony – very much unlike Meta – is doing absolutely everything it can to leave everybody in the dark. There is a nice sale on PSVR2 going on with accompanying nice sales numbers, but zero commitment, stated or actual, to PSVR2. Yes, MS, Pico, Valve made some baffling choices as well, while Meta, for all its own questionable logics at times, is clearly dedicated to VR and poring tons of money in.

Sony made a nice VR set in 2016, then kind of left it, came up with a much better VR set in 2023 and a few great games, then eh.. kind of left it again. Why has there been no backwards compatibility to SPVR, no effort to transfer PSVR games to PSVR2? Why release Astro Bot, the most beloved PSVR game Without VR support? Why release a PCVR connection that omits most PSVR aspects like foveated rendering? There may be solid reasons for some of this, but it kind of leaves me and many others wondering what the etc. Sony is going for with this…

          • Christian Schildwaechter

Agree except for the part about Meta not leaving everyone in the dark. They happily talk about their great plans, but are stingy with reporting back on them. Their only "released" HMD numbers were DK1/2 unit sales on a cafe blackboard during a PR event. The only active Quest users number is from a 2022-10 leaked Meta memo. Rare aggregate Quest store revenue numbers hid most money going to Meta owned Beat Saber and Supernatural. GTA San Andreas for Quest? "On hold indefinitely", according to a 2024-08 comment on Meta's YouTube account, not clarifying why or whether it was canceled or never even started.

Sony actually reported selling 5mn PSVR1 in 2020-01, the only HMD sales number we ever got from any company. They also explained that Astro Bot didn't get PSVR2 support due to mechanics like puzzles relying on fixed perspective not working with VR's free head movement. It was again up to analysts and journalist to explain that altering Astro Bot's game design, which started in Dualshock tutorials and even had Astro Bot flying around on a controller shaped glider, wasn't worth risking this golden opportunity for Sony to establish their own mascot for PSVR2 that only 3% of PS5 players own.

          • Arno van Wingerde

3% is better than I expected and those 3% most likely also spends more on games, making them count more like 10% or so.

Sure, first give the 97% something to enjoy, but after that: why not grow your 3% by actually making games for it? Even if it is by afterwards converting 2D stuff for VR? This is the kind of negative messages Sony sends out by the dozen… I am happy to see 3rd parties making games for PSVR2, but this could have been so much better.

          • Christian Schildwaechter

Reporting only official facts would be nice, but requires companies to actually release relevant market data. The alternative is deriving data from sources like Amazon sales or Steam/Horizon Store review counts, occasional supply chain leaks etc. Everyone playing with closed cards not only in VR created an army of analysts trying to interpret secondary data, which is often the sole source available to journalists. Second source checking becomes difficult with zero official sources.

Instead of blaming journalists for trying to guess company plans or strategies from data scraped together from at least somewhat reliable sources, criticism should be directed at companies always claiming to be happy with results, but never releasing numbers or projections. How is Quest 3 selling? "Better than expected!" Is that two million units, or two thousands? Or two?

Journalists reporting on not confirmable sources marked as neither official nor 100% reliable, only often right in the past, isn't irresponsible sabotage. Instead they are trying to help others make sense of where VR is heading. Companies only reporting successes while hiding bad numbers are the ones aiming to distort the public's view.

Two hypothetical scenarios for getting rid of existing stock:

      PSVR2
Sony might have expected to sell HCotM bundles a lot faster and already have plans for other bundles. If there is an upcoming AAA title with VR support like RE4/8 that Sony expects to drive VR sales in 2025, to be bundled after a price cut with a build cost reduced hardware revision in new packaging listing PC compatibility, this could make older headsets harder to sell, requiring uncomfortable price cuts.

      HCotM
Horizon Zero Dawn released 2017 to great success, the sequel Horizon Forbidden West in 2022, announced about 1.5 years before release and delayed by a year due to CoViD-19. Sony owned Guerilla Games confirmed working on another sequel, and if they again aim for a four year gap (without pandemic), it would release in 2026 and we should get a release date soon.

Since Astro Bot from Sony's PS4/5 Dualshock tutorials, now their closest thing to Mario, didn't get VR support in 2024 with the now only 3DoF tracked Dualshock 5, Sony could make the Horizon franchise their AAA showcase for hybrid game design to appease disappointed "Rescue Mission" fans. HCotM offered great visuals in VR, but limited length, simplified combat, and more climbing than exploration. The current bundle could create extra hype for an upcoming announcement for the next title and get rid of HCotM copies that might look more like tech demos if we indeed get a full scale AAA title with VR support.

I take it as Sony acknowledging that despite insane prices for PS5 during the pandemic, there are limits to what people are willing to pay, with PSVR2's price set far above that, needing correction. So this is Sony trying to regain ground.

PSVR2 released 2023-02 for USD 549, competing during the following holiday season with USD 499 Quest 3. And the winner was … 2020 Quest 2 incl. USD 50 gift card for USD 249, outselling both by a huge margin. For 2024 Meta lined up the USD 299 Quest 3S, selling worse during Black Friday than Quest 2 the year before, despite being more capable and bundling Batman: Arkham Shadows and a USD 75 gift card. Many possible reasons, from economy to Quest 3S getting less press than Quest 3 got thanks to Meta for months hyping up Mixed Reality.

It could be simply people being unwilling to pay 20% more for a similar box playing similar games, while in 2023 Quest 2 looked like a bargain, when people looked for Quest 3 and found Quest 2 doing mostly the same for just half the price. The big price drop to USD 350 could also drive current PSVR2 sales, making it look like a bargain compared to the regular price, with many taking the opportunity in case it rises again.

Sony rides this wave that probably won't reach Quest 3S numbers, but might outsell Quest 3, and puts them back on the field for less money than a VR Christmas ad campaign war with Meta. Permanent price drops in 2025 seem likely, maybe first USD 450 to appease those who paid USD 550, and later to the USD 350 now received so well.

  • Arno van Wingerde

The background of Sony's price drop are still unclear: whether it is to "clear stock" or "gain marketshare" can only be judged when Sony either comes with new first party VR titles or not. To me, that is the only true gauge of Sony's intents with PSVR2.

    • ApocalypseShadow

I agree. It's very disappointing that Sony hasn't built other VR titles for what looks to be a great headset. The two they made are going but it's not enough. I could buy it. The launch price was a non factor. But I won't because for me, It doesn't have the same push of first party titles like PSVR had. Lacks features like watching 3D movies like PSVR had. And no updated ports of great titles like Blood and Truth, Wipeout and Astrobot. I think gamers would buy into those titles with updated graphics, resolution and features. They don't have to take billions in losses. But they could at least throw some more bones to the hungry dogs like myself that like VR.

I turned on PSVR a few days ago and played Ace Combat 7. Still awesome to this day in VR. How come they can't spend a little money there and get Namco to port that game to PS5 and maybe add some more levels based on the 3 splendid levels. I'm not picky and expect the whole game. I'd take two more awesome levels and a few more planes. Can't even get that. So, I have beef there as well even if I like Sony products. The fact that I know a Spider-Man title would get the community salivating like the free VR ad that released on PSVR and PC is really depressing. Even if they had to limit movement, Insomniac has the VR experience already. Can't even get that.

Lol. What's funny is that my comment could be seen as not helping their sales. But it's at least truth coming from experience and not the comment I made above about this articles speculation of hardware dumping.

Probably because there is some really awesome games on psvr2, from metro awakening witch is a masterpiece, to stuff like Airizona sunshine 1 remake an 2, the walking dead saints & sinner's 1 & 2- witch are more masterpieces, then the batman vr game, the newly released Behemoth- from sky dance witch is getting a ton of praise, of course resident evil village and 4, plus on the 19th we got-alien rouge incursion- witch also looks amazing from the previews.
then with a pc adapter an a extra cable you can plug it up to a pc & play PC vr games with the psvr2- minus the haptic feedback, but still that means you could play values vr masterpiece-half life alyx, a game i really want to play, i do wish it was just available on psvr2 but it isn't yet, but there has been rumors that it may be one day, an there is some other stuff in the works they say, so yeah they are putting some effort into these games an they are not just a 2 to 4 hour game for a lot of them, they are full fleshed out games from 8 to 12 + hour adventures, with quite a bit of content that is definitely worth experiencing, I was definitely skeptical an never thought i would like it but after taking the plunge an playing a game for myself I see where all the hype was coming from, the games look amazing and are so immersive, it does truly feel like being in these worlds, survival horror action games can benefit greatly from vr being an extra option, there is a lot of cool stuff they could do, like more immersive weapon handling and having to reload by hand is a really cool one.

now if only we could get a fully fleshed out dino crisis game- an have vr be an option like with resident evil 4 an Village. A brand new dead space game with vr, that would be a system seller if it was, a new evil within,
then they could do other stuff like a fully fleshed out single player-(evil dead) action horror adventure where you an friends go to a cabin an of course the deadites pay a visit, my god that would be epic, or how about a gta or gta inspired vr game, that would also be awesome, a call of duty vr game, something else that could be super fun, maybe a bioshock game.
I mean the possibilities are endless.

  • Marcus

For anyone considering getting a psvr2, definitely get on Amazon or a business of choice an find a head strap that goes onto the headset an keeps it in place on top of your head, like a t shape strap that is pretty cheap an it just works, it really is a game changer with the headset it makes it so much more comfortable an easy to keep in place without needing to rearrange it every few mins.
