Careers and employability

Graduates from the School of Economics and Finance have very strong career prospects. Our proximity to both the City and Canary Wharf gives us strong industry links.

Our graduates enter into a wide range of careers, including roles at large financial organisations including JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Credit Suisse and Barclays. Our graduates are also in demand at professional services firms such as EY, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG. In the public sector, recent graduates have worked for the Bank of England, the Department for International Development, the Department for Transport, the NHS and HMRC. Recent graduates have also entered into careers in the insurance industry, the IT sector, education, sales, retail and marketing.

There are also a wide range of societies on campus, which can help you develop commercial awareness and gain valuable leadership, team-working and communication skills.

The Economics Society is currently the largest society on campus with over 400 members! They produce a popular magazine – Chronicle of Economic Affairs – and regularly organise a variety of events designed to expand economic knowledge and develop employability skills.

Banking and Finance society provides you with the perfect tools required for your future in this industry. Join to explore deeper and attend talks by professionals from well-known firms every month.

The aims of the society:

  • To enrich students’ knowledge of the variety of different career opportunities within finance and more specifically the banking industry.
  • To improve Queen Mary University students’ chances of getting accepted to Spring Programs, Summer Internships, and Graduate Programs by providing them with a deeper understanding of the position and support.
  • To help students build a professional network and motivate them to achieve their career goals.
  • By organising talks by professionals from well-known firms, members will be able to expand their network within the industry they are interested in.
  • Providing help with CV’s, cover letters and organising mock interviews for members will help them to prepare for their application process.

Queen Mary Trading and Investment Society is a student led finance society, which provides a dedicated environment for members to learn, discuss and engage in financially related topics.

The society aims to educate members on the financial markets and relevant topics and issues, assist in their career search, and provide an opportunity for networking. The society also runs a private live fund, which is used to demonstrate active trading and techniques.

With the face of the Financial Services Sector changing as we know it, FinTech is more relevant than ever in today’s business world. It is the combination of finance & technology which has resulted in big startup banks like Monzo & Starling, crypto currency such as Bitcoin, payments such as PayPal and stock trading apps such as Trading 212. It is becoming a major & disruptive part in investment banking, private equity, venture capital, asset management , information technology etc.

Queen Mary FinTech Society has an aim that isn't limited to the United Kingdom; an aim to equip students with knowledge and experience of professionals and opportunities from all corners of the world. The societies Worldwide Insight Series will have professionals who have experience working in United States, Ireland , United Kingdom, Dubai and India. We endeavour to provide a platform for students from any background to learn, evaluate and debate the developments in financial technologies that could change the way we think about finance today.

Whether you’re interested in gaining a quick understanding of the developments within the industry, are wildly passionate about the innovative technology impacting finance, or you yourself want to pursue a career in FinTech, QM Fintech society is the place for you to begin your journey with.

The Careers & Enterprise Centre

School of Economics and Finance students have access to the Careers & Enterprise Centre at Queen Mary for the duration of their studies and for two years after graduating. In addition to the central support available, the School of Economics and Finance has two dedicated Careers Consultants, who run weekly 1-to-1 sessions offering students a range of support including:

  • Support finding work experience, internships or a graduate job

  • Providing feedback on your CV, cover letter or application form

  • Interview skills – including mock interviews

  • Choosing your career path

 

Additional career development opportunities include employer and alumni events, careers fairs, skills workshops, mock assessment centres and practice psychometric tests, along with a wide range of digital and hard-copy careers resources. The Careers Team organise a series of employer and alumni events called Focus on Finance in the autumn term. These sessions give you insights in the world of finance and an opportunity to develop their network.

English Language Skills

For non-native English speakers, the Language Centre runs a number of non-credit bearing modules to help you develop your English Language Skills.
