Osborne House, in East Cowes, was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer residence. The oldest section, the Pavilion, was designed by the prince himself, to resemble an Italian palazzo, and built by Thomas Cubitt. Three wings were added subsequently: the Household Wing (in 1848), the Main Wing (in 1851) and the Durbar Wing (in 1892).
