Its history spans over 900 years, founded by a group of monks in the year 1118. During the French Revolution the abbey was abandoned and partially dismantled, falling into disrepair until 1873 when it was rescued by Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild. Charlotte was a lover of art and music, she restored the building with great care and sympathy. During WWII, the abbey was used to shelter previous statues from nearby Palace of Versailles, keeping them hidden from German soldiers. We kicked off our adventure in Avignon, then set off to explore everything from hidden antique markets to vibrant red villages. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s market was a dream, and the vibes at the village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse was so serene and tranquil. We made stops in Gordes (basically a real-life postcard), Roussillon (where every building is a shade of red!), and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence where Van Gogh once found his inspiration.
