We call Everest the tallest mountain (29,000 feet) but it depends how we measure. It's the highest peak above sea level because its base is on the 16,000 foot-tall Tibetan Plateau – it gets a huge boost! Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is taller (33,000 feet) but its base is underwater so its peak is not as high above sea level.
