EDWARD II PLANTAGENET got the throne at the age of 23 years. He was the 6th Plantagenet king, in a line that began with the reign of Henry II.Between the strong reigns of his father Edward I and son Edward III, the reign of Edward II was considered to be disastrous for England, marked by alleged incompetence, political squabbling and military defeats. Hated by his wife Isabella, daughter of Philip IV of France,as he was bisexual,he was murdered at the age of 43 by her and her lover Mortimer.

Eleanor of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine inherited her father's lands in 1137, and married Louis VII of France that same year. Their marriage was annulled in 1152. She then married Henry II of England, bearing him eight children including sons Richard (the Lion-Hearted) and John who would both become king. Eleanor promoted courtly culture, including troubadour songs, and was a savvy military adviser to her sons.
