Shell House: Homes and Interiors

Victorian interiors were as diverse as our own, shaped not just by current trends but also inheritances from the past and personal taste, sometimes quite eccentric. In writing "The Shell House" I enjoy imagining very different interior, from Jonah Reed's constricted London rowhouse to the sold manor house from which Clare Hetton comes to the giant faux-Gothic pile built by the newly rich Bulmer family. The Proposal by Knut Ekwall (1880). The girl is a twit but the lushness and detail of the interior is amazing.
