Crash Bandicoot is a video games platform franchise. Originally developed by Naughty Dog exclusive for the Sony PlayStation console, the series has received numerous installments created by numerous developers and published on multiple platforms.
The games are primarily located on the fictitious Wumpa Islands, an archipelago located in southern Australia where humans and mutant animals coexist, although other locations are common. The main games in the series are mostly platform games, but some of them fall into different genres. The main character of the series is a genetically modified bandicoot named Crash, whose quiet life on the Wumpa Islands is often interrupted by the main antagonist of the games, Dr. Neo Cortex, who creates Crash and wants him dead because it is a failed experiment. In most games, Crash must defeat Cortex and foil his plans for world domination.
Following the presentation of Mark Cerny Way of the Warrior, Universal Interactive Naughty Dog signed a contract with the company for three more games. In August 1994, Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin began moving from Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California. During the trip, Gavin and Rubin decided to create a 3D action platform inspired by the 16-bit games of the era like Donkey Kong Country, Mario, and Sonic. Since the player will be forced to constantly look at the character’s back, the game was jokingly called “Sonic’s Ass Game.” The core technology of the game and the Crash Bandicoot series as a whole was set up somewhere near Gary, Indiana. Rough Game Theory was developed near Colorado, Indiana, by David Siller, creator of Aero the Acro-Bat and Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Soon after, Gavin and Rubin abandoned their previous game design for Al O. Saurus and Einstein, a side-scrolling video game based on time travel and scientists genetically merged with dinosaurs. After fading into the Universal Interactive backlot, Gavin and Rubin met with Mark Cerny, discussed the game’s design, and agreed to start production. In September 1994, Gavin and Rubin decided to develop their new PlayStation game, after which Rubin took up character design. In November 1994, Naughty Dog hired Dave Baggett, their first employee and a friend of Gavin’s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together, Gavin and Baggett created a Game Oriented Object LISP (GOOG) that will be used to create game characters and gameplay. In January 1995, Rubin became concerned about the programmer-artist relationship and hired Bob Rafei and Taylor Kurosaki as additional artists.
Needing a lead character in the game, Naughty Dog hires American Exitus artists Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson and meets with them weekly to create the characters and environments for the game, eventually creating a character named “Willy the Wombat.
