מאם (√ of following, meaning unknown; Ol § 205 proposes √ אום = חום black, compare already Ew § 160 d).
מֵאָה constr. מְאַת f.
(1) a hundred, Arab. مِأَيةُ according to Kam., commonly مِيءَةُ [“Eth. ምአት፡, Syr. ܡܳܐܐ”]. It is prefixed to substantives in absol. and constr. state, מֵאָה שָׁנָה Genesis 17:17, and מְאַת שָׁנָה 25:7 it is more rarely put after them, and this is only in the later books; רִמֹּנִים מֵאָה 2 Chronicles 3:16. Dual מָאתַיִם (contr. for מְאָתַיִם) two hundred, Genesis 11:23. Pl. מֵאוֹת
(a) hundreds more than one; hence with other numerals שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת “six hundred,” Exodus 12:37 שְׁמֹנֶה מֵאוֹת “eight hundred,” Genesis 5:7, etc. Once
(b) one hundred, as if centena, 2 Ch. 25:9 כתיב (compare verse ). A less common form is מאיות (read מְאָיוֹת), 2 Kings 11:4, 2 Kings 11:9, 10 2 Kings 11:10, 15 2 Kings 11:15 כתיב, compare Arab. مِأَيةُ.
(2) adv. a hundred times, Proverbs 17:10 constr. מְאַת id. Ecclesiastes 8:12.
(3) the hundredth part, i.e. of money or any thing, paid monthly, as being exacted in usury, Nehemiah 5:11, מְאַת הַבֶּסֶף וְהַדָּגָן. Vulg. centesima. As to the centesima of the Romans, see Ernesti Cl. Cic. h. v.; as to the heavy usury still customary in the East, see Volney’s Travels, vol. ii. p. 410.
(4) [Meah], pr.n. of a tower at Jerusalem, Nehemiah 3:1, 12:39.
