  3. An issue at USCB?... Drinking is deeply ingrained in the campus culture at many universities across the Nation.

  5. Academic Problems: About 25 percent of college students report academic consequences of their drinking Overall lower grades! …Lack of focus Missing class…

  6. Other Likely Consequences:

How does excessive drinking apply to transfer students more so than the overall undergraduate population? • Transfer Shock! • Transfer students feel the effects of alcohol and peer pressure more so than those admitted as freshman. • Feel the need to become apart of the community. • Moving into a college community away from home. • Coping with the quarter system, challenging classes and a new social scene.

  9. UCSB Recreation Center Fitness(basketball courts, racquet ball courts, fitness equipment) Intramural Sports(most are coed) including Golf, Soccer, Softball, Flag Football and others. Club Sports(coed or one gender) including Ski and Snowboard, Rugby, Soccer, Lacrosse and others. Adventure Programs(Kayaking, SCUBA, and others)

  10. 2. • Great for helping yourself or others you may know that are experiencing a struggle with drinking • Offers self help groups • Provides free and confidential counseling • Substance-free housing • Offers seminars • Offers education courses in drinking

  22. What S.T.A.R is About Peer Educators: trained to provide info about effects of alcohol & other drugs and give helpful tips on how to avoid harmful outcomes when using such substances

S.T.A.R. continued • Convey info in nonjudgmental way • Support both: students who choose to abstain & not abstain from alcohol • Events: -Alcohol Awareness Week -Safe Spring Break Week • Has its uses… -INTERNSHIP opportunity!!!!!! Does the budget dictate necessity? • It shouldn’t!!!!! • Are these programs essential: YES!!! • Students need outlets that don’t just involve alcohol & drugs • Reason they exist: issue, problem defined, collective effort between students & UCSB to find alternative ways • Requires both inputs: UCSB and students • Alternative Solution(s): -Set up new programs in Isla Vista geared toward alcohol & drug usage (education, counseling, etc)
