TOPIC: Ecology AIM: How do living things interact with their environment? DO NOW: What makes up the community you live in?
Ecology Study of interactions that occur among organisms and their Physical Environment
Ecosystem All living & nonliving things in environment Biotic factors = living Abiotic = nonliving
Community All living things in an area Example: Pond: fish, frogs, plants…
Population Living things of same species in community Example: Pond: all algae
Habitat Where organism lives Salamanders live on the forest floor under leaves & twigs.
Niche Role of an organism
What it eats, • How it gets food & shelter,’ • How it finds a mate, cares for young…
Limiting factors Anything that restricts the number of individuals in a population
When does competition occur? When organisms seek same resource at same time
Producers Autotrophs Plants
carbon dioxide from the air water from the roots energy from sunlight (or light) food transported to the rest of the plant
Consumers Heterotrophs
Types: • 1. Herbivores = • feed on producers • primary consumers
2. Carnivores = • feed on animals (meat eating) • Secondary consumer
3. Omnivores = • Eat plants & animals
4. Scavengers = • feed on animals killed by other organisms. Ex-vultures • (vultures)
5. Predators = • Kills prey & feeds on them
Decomposers Break down remains of dead organisms return nutrients into soil (bacteria and fungi)
REVIEW What is an ecosystem? Explain the difference between a community and a population? What type of organism is an autotroph? How is a decomposer beneficial to an ecosystem? Explain the differences between carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
