Biomarkers are becoming increasingly important tools within all areas of medicine. Potential applications of biomarkers in infectious diseases include distinguishing bacterial from nonbacterial infection, monitoring response to therapy, and predicting outcomes. Continued research into a number of noninvasive urinary, serologic, and genetic biomarkers will help clinicians with diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. The following is a brief synopsis of several recent publications exploring the potential roles of biomarkers in infectious diseases.
