ABSTRACT
Lester Ballard is an angry, distant man, withdrawing from civilization in 1960s rural Tennessee as a means of protest against the incumbent social order. Alone in the wilderness without so much as a family for support, Lester devolves into the state of a brutish caveman, becoming a violent criminal who would ultimately traffic in hideously gruesome murders.
