Ed Sheeran tops album chart after selling 100,000 copies of debut ‘+’

Singer-songwriter goes straight to number one

Ed Sheeran‘s debut album has gone straight to the top of the Official Albums Chart.

More than 100,000 copies of ‘+’ have been snapped up since Monday (September 12), sending the Suffolk singer to No 1.

The feat follows the success of single ‘You Need Me I Don’t Need You,’ which was released in January and went to No 4, while ‘The A Team’ went one better in May.

Sheeran has released five independent EPs, and his October UK tour has already sold out.

He’s not the only new entry to make the Top 10 this week. Laura Marling‘s third album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’ is in at No 4, while The Kooks ‘Junk Of The Heart’ sits at No 10.

Over in the singles chart, One Direction have tasted their first No 1 with ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, selling more than 150,000 copies of the song in a week. Meanwhile, Will Young‘s ‘Jealousy’ returns to the Top 10, up from 12.
