What to know about Pirates Spring Training

It’s that wonderful time of the year. Winter is giving way to spring. Optimism permeates clubhouses across the country. A new season is approaching, a blank canvas upon which limitless realities can be painted.

In about 2 1/2 weeks, the Pirates will play the Blue Jays at LECOM Park, officially kicking off the latest iteration of Spring Training. Here’s what you’ll need to know ahead of Pittsburgh’s exhibitions:

When is the first workout for pitchers and catchers?
Feb. 15

What is the date of the first full-squad workout?
Feb. 20

Where is the team’s facility?
Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla. The Pirates will have workouts at Pirate City from Feb. 15-24, then move to LECOM Park, which is located at 1611 9th Street West in Bradenton.

Can fans attend workouts?
Yes.

Who are some new faces fans should know?
The Pirates were one of baseball’s most active teams this offseason. To recap, they signed Rich Hill, Carlos Santana, Vince Velasquez, Jarlín García and Austin Hedges; acquired Ji-Man Choi, Connor Joe and Dauri Moreta via trade; and selected Jose Hernandez in the Rule 5 Draft. They also signed to a one-year deal some guy named Andrew McCutchen, who Pirates fans might remember from a few years back.

Who are some of the top prospects invited to Major League camp?
The list of Pirates prospects who received non-roster invitations to Major League camp includes Henry Davis, Termarr Johnson, Quinn Priester, Nick Gonzales, Malcom Nunez, Jared Jones and Matt Gorski. Additionally, Endy Rodriguez, Liover Peguero, Luis Ortiz, Mike Burrows, Colin Selby and Jared Triolo will be in Major League camp, as all five are on the 40-man roster.

Which players will be participating in the World Baseball Classic?
As of now, David Bednar (United States) and prospects Tahnaj Thomas (Great Britain) and Jeffrey Passantino (Italy) are the only players in the organization who have publicly said they will be participating in the World Baseball Classic.

When is the team’s first Grapefruit League game?
The Pirates’ first Grapefruit League game is Feb. 25 against the Blue Jays at LECOM Park at 1:05 p.m. ET

What are a few other notable spring games?
In 2022, the Pirates didn’t have the opportunity to play the Braves. Additionally, they only played the Phillies and Red Sox one time apiece. This year, Pittsburgh will have two matchups against Atlanta and Boston and four games vs. Philadelphia.

Will the team’s games be televised?
Home games will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet.

When is the club’s last game in Florida?
The Pirates’ last game in Florida is March 28 against the Twins at LECOM Park at 1:05 p.m. ET.

What are the details for Opening Day?
The Pirates’ first game of the 2023 season will be against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park at 4:10 p.m. ET on March 30.
