Pune is an industrial city with significant corporate and industrial infrastructure growth during the last ten years. The city's roads currently carry about 8,000 commuters each hour in each direction. The town faces heavy traffic during peak hours, congestion, long traffic jams, and increased pollution. The Pune Metro intends to address this by providing a safe and environmentally friendly commute with a 50% reduction in travel time.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have developed the Pune Metro, which is an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). One metro line in Pune is operational, and a few are under construction.
Public and non-public sections, often called technical zones, will be available on the Pune Metro route. The public space will be separated into paid and unpaid areas. Escalators and lifts will be placed in the paid portions of all metro stations in Pune.
Pune Metro Rail's Unique Features
Made In India: Pune Metro coaches are made in India as part of the union government's Make in India policy. Over 70% of the trainers are made up of indigenous people.
Lightest Metro: Pune's lightest metro compartments are made of aluminium metal, which is 6.5 per cent lighter than traditional steel coaches. These compartments will last longer, require less maintenance, and consume less energy.
Underground Metro Stations In Pune That Save Space: The Pune Metro's subterranean segment passes through the city's most crowded area. The traditional 'Cut and Cover' method of erecting subterranean metro stations in Pune was not practicable due to the scarcity of space in these places.
Rooftop And Grid Solar Energy Integration: Pune Metro has planned to install approximately since its beginning. 11.20MWp solar power generation on the rooftops of all the elevated Pune metro stations. The energy formed will be used in all metro train stations in Pune. This will save Rs 20 crores per year in energy costs and prevent the release of roughly 25,000 tons of CO2.
Zero Discharge: Maha Metro and the DRDO have agreed to construct anaerobic biodigester technology for 100 per cent wastewater management. This technique will result in zero discharge into the municipal wastewater system for all the metro stations in Pune.
