Oppressed by her family setting, dead-end school prospects and the boys law in the neighborhood, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of 3 free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom.

“Since I really loved ‘Portrait de la jeune fille en feu’, I was quite eager to watch another movie directed by Céline Sciamma so I thought I might as well check this one out. Well, even if it might not be one of her most famous movies, it was still not bad at all. By now, I have seen enough movies dealing with ‘la banlieue’ (the French ghettos around Paris) but it was the first one I have seen focusing on the girls living there. Basically, it is a depressive but above all, as displayed in this movie, a really oppressive place to live and probably even more for young girls. Indeed, just like the boys, they have basically no prospects but, on top of that, there is some immediate physical danger at every dark corners.
