“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Chloë Grace Moretz, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I really loved this title, even it did make the whole thing sound slightly pretentious. Well, I always had a weak spot for Moretz but, to be honest, it has been a while since she impressed me so much. Indeed, she gave such a strong performance, easily one of the best of her career so far, and I thought she was really convincing. Unfortunately, it’s too bad that they kept the main character in such a catatonic state through most of the duration. It’s not that it didn’t make sense, it just that it wasn’t really rewarding as a viewer. On top of that, the way she suddenly did open up during some school inspection felt more like some ” read more
"Watched: 124 Movies Date: 03.14.20 Genre: Drama (Lesbian) I really enjoyed this movie. And believe me when I say I didn't think I would. I figured the plot would make for a difficult watch but I was wrong. It turns out that despite the plot (gay girl sent to anti-gay concentration camp) the movie is mildly erotic. “Postulates a rather pointed theory that conversion therapy not only does not work, but those in charge of the proceedings are merely as troubled, conflicted and ignorant as the people they are attempting to recondition. I was not bored, and it is oddly poignant and authentic in its character dialogue and interplay, however, it is perhaps too faithful to its source novel, which, all in all, was rather weak in its attack of the very subject it was supposed to dissect, but maybe my interpretation of it was wholly incorrect?
In my cynical opinion, the far less pretentious and serious "But I'm A Cheerleader", in all of its schematic, offbeat indie weirdness and comical hi jinks, is far more biting, entertaining and ultimately, worthy of repeat viewings, whereas this film deserves to ” read more
"Low-key and very relevant tale of a girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who is forced to go to a church camp after she is caught in the back of a car with another girl. his examination of gay conversion therapy is something that has come back in American politics, yet this tale, set in the 90's, like BlacKkKlansman, might as well be set now. Brilliantly understated performance from Moretz as well as the strong supporting cast makes this an enjoyable yet poignant tale."
