This is a list of films where the television set itself plays a key role. Ever since the TV set was introduced its popularity quickly propelled it to the most important item in the household (for better or worse). It has power...literally, of course, but also figuratively speaking. It has the power to draw families together socially or to separate them. Some people trust it to babysit or "watch" there children, so to speak, for hours on end. Through it's looking glass we see people, places, and even worlds that we will never be able to visit in person. But it's also a tool for manipulation. Some use it to manipulate certain other people to buy their product or to try and sway their political opinion to vote for a certain candidate or to not vote for another. Through its medium the supposedly unbiased media is able to reach the people and tell them what they "need" to know, and what they should be doing, and what they should be wearing, and what they should be thinking. The medium of television has become the opiate of the masses and through its screen we get our ocular fix which rides the optic nerve straight to the brain on a daily basis.
Filmmakers sometimes tap into these ideas and give us movies about the horrors of corporate manipulation through television (Network), as well as the horrors of corporeal manipulation through television (Videodrome), or actual creatures and beings coming through the television to attack us (The Ring, Demons 2, The Video Dead etc.), or the trusted television-as-babysitter actually pulling children into it (Poltergeist). These films work because they touch on a thought, or even fear, that everyone who watches television has had at some point, whether consciously or subconsciously...are we watching it or is it watching us. So turn on, tune in, zone out!
