I’ve hired a lot of finance leaders over the years; BU CFOs, CAOs, VPs, the works. I’ve made plenty of mistakes too. But it’s been years since I got a senior finance hire wrong. What changed? I used to hire like I was playing freeform jazz; improvised, instinct-driven, convinced I was some kind of hiring sensei. And with good but inconsistent results. But when I swapped improvisation for discipline - a rigid 11-step process - everything changed. My hit rate on senior finance hires went from “good enough” to “near perfect."
