Two Alerts. One SOC Analyst. Which First? It’s 10:42 AM. Coffee in hand. Then… bammm! Two alerts drop: ☠ Alert A: “Ransomware note detected on 7 machines in Finance.” 🌐 Alert B: “Massive inbound traffic spike on our main website (possible DDoS).” Both bad. But you can only focus on one right now. Here’s my thought process: 🔹Ransomware → Files are being encrypted as we speak. Every second = more data gone. Once it’s encrypted without backups… It’s game over. 🔹DDoS → Annoying, yes. Users can’t reach us. However, no files are lost, and no internal systems are being compromised. We can usually work with our hosting provider to block traffic and recover. So I go: ✅ Contain ransomware first → isolate infected machines, protect backups, stop the spread. 🔄 Then deal with the DDoS. Key takeaway for any SOC analyst: 👉 Stop the irreversible damage first. 👉 You can bring a site back online.
