Ever notice Forbes in a variety of search results? Well, grab some popcorn and give this post and article a read! To break it down for the non-SEO folks seeing this post, especially those that may be my age or older and associate the Forbes brand as a financial and business publisher: A separate company called Forbes Marketplace (not to be confused with Forbes itself) is using the brand authority of the Forbes.com domain on the web to write affiliate content across different industries. What does that mean? Well, if they want to make money off of keywords with high search volume, like “best CBD gummies” for example, then writing a post and having it rank quickly is within reach because it lives on Forbes.com, even though it has nothing to do with business or money. I’m not saying all of the articles are “bad” content. What I am saying is that it sets a bad precedent for SEO practices , especially when Google continues to come out with policies to specifically prevent actions like this from happening. Content marketing has an existential problem. We've been told to "Provide Value" & "Be Engaging" but not "how". Not really. Don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 programs on developing premises, and creating content brands, and audience research, and writing, and editing, but these are individual pieces of a 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 larger picture. In my nearly 20 years of doing work in this field, I've yet to find a unifying theory... A study of the fundamental elements of effective content. A set of rules to create, analyze, and interpret high-performing content programs. A Content Theory. This has led to a number of problems like: • Lack of buy-in • Not enough resources • Not enough trust to do something new Because of this, the vast majority of content marketers are capable of doing so much more than they're allowed to do. It's like management will only hire cover bands if they can curate the playlist while your peers are writing the hits that push the genre forward. Indeed, according to "The State of (Dis)Content Report" (coming very soon) the top three creation problems Content Marketers have are: • Differentiating content • Creating the right content for our audience • Creating "Quality" content I'll show you the evidence soon, but trust me when I say, this has led to the vast majority of Content Marketers not being creatively fulfilled, unsure or unconfident people would recognize their content on voice alone, and having complicated relationships with their work and their career. You probably never expected to get paid well to become disillusioned with the work. This needs to change. This is going to change. In the coming weeks and months I'll be sharing everything I've learned about what goes into creating content that's contributed to ten figures in revenue and has transformed my life from living in a boarding house to working with industry-defining companies and consulting with Fortune 500 brands. What's the fastest way to weed out unqualified content writers? Their price point. I've sourced and hired dozens of writers over the course of my in-house and consulting career, and how much they charge is easily the quickest way to check for whether they're a decent writer. That's certainly not the only thing you should be looking for, but 8/10 times their pricing will tell you everything. What specifically should you be looking for? At the risk of giving away the secret sauce, I'd say that a good writer won't charge less than $700 for an 800-1200 word article. And that's assuming that the article is purely based on a conversation with your internal subject matter expert and doesn't include the writer's own research. So save yourself the trouble of hiring cheap and ending up with something that's not worth publishing and going back to the drawing board. Hire someone good the first time. Oh, and by the way, ChatGPT is the cheapest writer out there ✌. #privateequity #contentmarkeing #content
