But Naruto is also whirlpools in the Naruto Straits between Awaji Island and Naruto.
The actual Naruto Maki resemble the spiral patterns, and this is the exact reason the name Naruto Rolls came from.
Naruto Sushi Roll is a Roll of sliced cucumbers used instead of Nori Sheets.
Sliced cucumbers are placed onto a sushi bamboo mat, filled with vegetables and raw fish, and rolled the same way ordinary sushi is.
After cutting them into maki rolls, they resemble the exact Naruto Whirlpools I have mentioned above.
The whirlpools of the Naruto straits between Japanese Naruto and Awaji Island.
Apart from calling cucumber sushi rolls naruto rolls, various names have been used throughout the years.
You might find them under Rainbow Rolls, Cucumber Rolls, Naruto Rolls, Cucumber Maki, or Naruto Sushi Rolls.

And do not forget a bowl of soya sauce with pickled ginger and wasabi.
How did I discover Naruto Rolls?
I had no idea Naruto rolls existed just a few years ago.
We love sashimi. Whenever there is an opportunity to go to a restaurant, we either choose Steakhouse or a Japanese restaurant. One day, we ordered a sashimi plate, and with it came those Naruto rolls.
We immediately fell in love with them since they are completely low carb and something slightly different from the sashimi orders we always made.
Japanese Restaurants
We went to a different Japanese restaurant on another occasion, and I wanted to order a plate of only Naruto rolls.
First of all, they did not even know what it was. I searched quickly on my phone and showed them some images. When the chef saw that, he immediately refused with an excuse that this is very difficult to make and they do not offer it.
A month later, we went to the same restaurant where we got our Naruto Rolls previously and happily ordered all of them.
But what happened?
We got the same answer. “It is difficult, and we do not offer it.” With our explanation, the last time we got it here, they said, “Our chef changed.”
That was the end story of ordering those rolls anywhere. We have then tried a few more restaurants with the same negative answer.
Making Naruto Rolls at home
As you know me already, I could not just leave it. This was my motivation and decision to do our own at home.
I went onto google and started researching and checking how to make them. It looked really easy how the Japanese chefs were slicing the cucumbers in the videos. So I went, bought a few pieces of long cucumbers, and planned a day to prepare them.
Unfortunately, as it always looks so easy on the videos, this was not the case. I used 5 cucumbers, which I completely destroyed and still could not get thinly sliced sheets properly.
How to slice cucumbers for sushi rolls?
I started thinking. How else can I slice it? I just wanted them so much that I was unwilling to give up. I went to buy a few more cucumbers and tried some other easier ways.
Then one of my trials worked, and therefore I can give you the kitchen tips and solutions on how to make them without cutting your fingers or trying the professional Japanese way.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING NARUTO ROLLS – CUCUMBER SUSHI ROLLS
First Step: Prepare Ingredients
Prepare all of the ingredients together, in our case, long cucumbers, avocado, and raw salmon.
At the same time, place a sushi bamboo mat together with cling film on a wooden board for rolling.
Second Step: Slice Cucumbers
First, we slice the cucumbers.
It is best to pick long cucumbers which are straight and identical in size.
Using your vegetable peeler, slice the cucumber’s outer layers. Avoid the middle of the cucumber as this contains most water, and those slices are difficult to use for Naruto Maki.
Third Step: Place cucumber slices on a sushi mat
Having your sushi bamboo mat already prepared, layer the slices of cucumbers, making sure they are halfway covering each other.
Once all of the slices are layered, cut the ends to make sure the pieces are the same size.
Fourth Step: Add fillings
Onto the one corner of the cucumber slices, place your toppings horizontally.
In our case, it is fresh avocado slices and raw salmon.
Fifth Step: Roll sushi rolls
As you see in the video, start rolling Naruto rolls exactly the same way as you would roll standard sushi into a log.
Sixth Step: Wrap and freeze
Once your cucumber is rolled, cover it with cling film and tighten it from each side for the roll to hold its shape.
It is advisable to either place the Naruto roll in the fridge for an hour or freeze it for a few minutes for the cucumber to hold its shape before cutting.
Seventh Step: Cut and serve
Take your naruto roll log out of the fridge or a freezer, open the cling film, and gently cut it into six cucumber naruto rolls.
You can sprinkle them with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning.
Serve and enjoy immediately.
Tips and Tricks:
- Slicing – avoid slicing middle of the cucumber as this contains most water, and those slices are difficult to use for Naruto Maki.
- Layering – make sure the cucumber slices are layered halfway on top of each other to avoid gaps in between
- Cooling – wrapping naruto rolls and cooling them before cutting helps rolls to hold their shape

Apart from sushi must, which is wasabi, pickled ginger, and soya sauce, you can also add a side dishes such as:
How do you store Naruto Rolls?
As naruto rolls consist of fresh avocado and raw fish, I do not suggest storing them. Naruto Rolls are best to serve and enjoy immediately.
If you skip raw fish and avocado, which might darken, naruto rolls filled with various vegetables can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Can you freeze Cucumber Naruto Rolls?
I do not suggest freezing naruto rolls as the cucumbers contain lots of water, and by thawing them, they will become very liquid and not pleasant to the taste.

These look delicious! I can’t wait to try them!
Dear Jordyn,
They are out of this world. You should really try them.
Zuzana
These look pretty tasty! I have a special veggie slicer that makes noodles…I wonder if it has a setting for this!?!
Dear Miranda,
Not really sure if the slicer will achieve this, but you can try it. Set it on as widest slices as possible. Then try. Good luck.
They look so yum! I hate how they make it look so easy lol….I can’t even find rolls with cucumber in our area either!
Dear Kristin,
They are not as difficult to make as the Japanese chefs are doing it. I have tried their was – no luck at all. But if you try how I did it – much easier.
Zuzana
They look delicious! I’m sure I’d have to go through many cucumbers to get it right. Good for you for figuring it out on your own!
Dear Nancy,
Not anymore, because I did it all for you. So you do not have to do the same mistake. Just follow this way and you will get it straight on the first go.
Zuzana
I love how you couldn’t get what you wanted, so you decided to make it yourself! Way to go!
Dear Candice,
This was really kind of desperation from my side. Once you want something …. you really really want it and cant get it anywhere. What else do we have? Make it yourselves.
Have a nice day
Zuzana
So pretty and I love anything cucumber…or sushi related! Thanks for the instructions and I hope I have the nerve to try them!!!
Dear Jules,
Once you will try them, you would realize, they are not really difficult to make it at home. Much much easier, then the Japanese way.
Have a great day
Zuzana
What a great snack or even app. Love it!
Thanks, Kelly,
We have just made them yesterday again. So popular.

How do you know the salmon you buy is okay for consumption raw?
Jessica,
The best is to buy from a market you know personally. Somewhere you do know they do have fresh salmon on a daily basis and before the butcher cuts it for you, say you need it for a Sashimi – raw.
If you have a Kitchenaid mixer, you can buy an attachment that will thinly cut the cucumber sheets for you. No cut fingers etc. One cucumber can make about 3 rolls. It comes with a thick or thin blade. I use the thick to make the roll sturdier. It makes it so easy I have cucumber rolls every week. I fill them with tuna, crab mixed with onion and mayo siracha with avocado slices. Very easy. If you sometimes find your rolls falling apart as you slice, just buy some sturdy toothpicks to put through the roll at about the thickness you want each of your pieces. I usually have about 4 toothpicks for each of my rolls I’m cutting. Works great.
That is a great idea. Shame that I do not have Kitchen Aid, but have seen attachment on several occasions already.
Love it!
So happy you do.
