Lothian partnership with VOCAL leaves legacy for carers

Colleagues at Lothian Buses with caring responsibilities will have a new resource to support them thanks to the launch of a Carer’s Passport, marking the end of the two-year partnership between the bus operator and VOCAL (Voice of Carers Across Lothian).

A Carer’s Passport is a living document which details the support needed to help Lothian employees who have unpaid carer roles and enables the carer and their manager to have supportive, meaningful conversations about their needs. VOCAL have worked closely with Lothian over the course of their two-year charity partnership to develop this tool and have provided training for managers across the business to better support colleagues who provide care for another person.

The charity partnership, which launched in early 2023, has helped raise awareness of the work of VOCAL and the invaluable services they provide in communities across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Through Lothian’s communications channels and the striking VOCAL bus (pictured), the charity has seen an increase in the number of referrals to their support services.

Helping to further the work they do, Lothian have also raised the fantastic sum of £11,500 through a variety of fundraising events including two Doors Open Days, charity challenges such as the Meadows Marathon and a sponsored skydive, and much more.

Gaynor Marshall, Communications Director at Lothian, said: “Our charity partnership with VOCAL has been really special.

“Knowing that we have helped to amplify VOCAL’s message within our operating area to promote the role of unpaid carers is confirmation that partnerships like this are vital.

“We’d like to take this opportunity, at the close of our partnership with VOCAL, to thank their team and service users for what has been an influential and inspirational two years.”

Rosemary McLoughlin, Chief Executive of VOCAL, said: “Our partnership with Lothian Buses has been incredible. There are over 95,000 unpaid carers in Edinburgh and the Lothians and many have accessed support for the first time because of this partnership. It has encouraged conversations about unpaid care and linked carers to vital support.

“Thank you to Lothian for making such an inspiring partnership possible. While our time as Charity of Choice is coming to a close, we look forward to continuing our work together in the years to come!”

Following the removal of the red weather warning, we will begin to return buses to our network from 1800hrs.

Our teams are working hard to evaluate routes across our network to ensure they’re safe to operate and we would ask customers to please bear with us during this time.

With fallen trees affecting roads and various damage to infrastructure across Edinburgh and the Lothians, there will be areas where we will be unable to operate until further notice.

Any customers who need to travel should plan their journeys in advance using our journey planner or through our Bus & Tram App.

Thank you to all of our colleagues and customers for their patience and understanding during these challenging conditions.

Thank you to our customers and colleagues for their patience and understanding.

UPDATED 1050 HRS ON 24 JANUARY 2025

Our network is now suspended due to Storm Éowyn and all buses have returned to their operating depot.

We continue to work closely with partners across the region and aim to return services to our network when it is safe to do so.

As a result of the red weather warning across our entire operating area on 24 January between the hours of 1000 and 1700 hrs, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw all services during these hours.

Vehicles will start to return to depots between 0800 and 0900 hrs.

We acknowledge that this is likely to cause significant inconvenience however the safety of our people and customers is paramount.

Our teams will continue to monitor this evolving situation, and we will endeavour to restore services as soon as it is safe to do so. Please be advised that from the information currently available to us, services are unlikely to begin to be restored before 1700 hrs.

Restoring our network will take some time and customers should be prepared for disruption until the end of service on Friday 24 January.

Lothian driver takes home silver in UK Bus AwardsJohn O'Hara recognised for exemplary driving record

Earlier this week Lothian’s own John O’Hara was awarded the Silver Award in the Top National Bus Driver category at this year’s UK Bus Awards.

Hosted at Troxy London on Tuesday 26 November, the annual awards recognise and reward the inspirational businesses and individuals at the heart of the bus industry across the UK.

Lothian driver, John O’Hara, was recognised for his exemplary record which spans an impressive 17 years with the business. Earlier this year he was awarded third place at Lothian’s Driver of the Year competition and went on to represent the company in the national finals in September.

Willie Hamilton, Operations Director, said: “John is an outstanding member of the driving team at Longstone, and we are proud that he’s been recognised with the Silver Award in the Top National Bus Driver Award category.

“With around 60 000 bus drivers working throughout the industry in the UK this really is an incredible achievement”.

“This award is a testament to his professionalism, driving skill and exceptional customer service”

Lothian also picked up a Bronze Award for City Operator and a Highly Commended award in the Recruitment and Retention category for our multi-disciplinary approach to driver recruitment. The recruitment drive included an extensive advertising campaign across multiple platforms, and the hiring of an Apprentice and Training Manager to provide additional support to those taking their first step on the career ladder.

Those travelling by train are advised by ScotRail to expect longer waiting times after the rugby due to limited access at Haymarket station, due to the ongoing redevelopment of an adjacent building.

The building work has restricted access to Haymarket and reduced the capacity within the station by half, which means some customers may be redirected to Edinburgh Waverley to catch their train due to the limited space available within Haymarket station.

Fans are asked to consider travelling straight to Edinburgh Waverley after the final whistle to reduce their need to queue or to postpone travel until later in the evening.

Lothian to mark Remembrance DayServices will pause where safe to do so to pay respect

Bus services will pause - where it is safe to do so - for two minutes at 1100 hrs on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

On Remembrance Sunday (Sunday 10 November) and on Armistice Day (Monday 11 November), our services will pause (where safely able to do so) for two minutes at 1100 hrs to allow colleagues and customers to pay tribute to all lives lost in the world wars and subsequent conflicts since then.

Lothian is proud to employ a number of colleagues who currently serve in the reserves or are ex-armed forces personnel, and the Poppyscotland appeal is particularly close to our hearts and minds throughout the month of November. On Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, colleagues who have military backgrounds are invited to wear their Veterans’ Ties as a mark of respect.

There will also be some road closures in effect across our network to allow various Remembrance Day events and services to take place. Please visit our Service Updates page to learn more.

Lothian's Poppyscotland bus was in attendance at Edinburgh Poppy Day on Thursday 31 October.

We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Poppyscotland, who are reliant on the generosity of the public to fund its vital life-changing work for the armed forces community in Scotland. Our Poppyscotland liveried bus was in attendance at Edinburgh Poppy Day on Thursday 31 October, where the charity officially launched their 2024 Poppy Appeal.

Lothian named National Bus Operator of the Year

Lothian was named Bus Operator of the Year at the National Transport Awards in London on Thursday 3 October.

The award, which is open to all UK and Irish bus operators, celebrates the strong performance of Lothian over the last 12 months, which includes delivering an incredible 110 million customer journeys in 2023.

Sarah Boyd, Managing Director of Lothian said: “I am absolutely delighted that Lothian have been recognised as Bus Operator of the Year at the National Transport Awards.

“Our people make Lothian a great place to work, and this award is a testament to their hard work and dedication to ‘getting it right’ in delivering for our customers on a daily basis.

“This award belongs to them, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of our people for their passion, commitment and loyalty.”

At the event in London, Lothian Driver Thomas Fair was also highly commended in the Frontline Employee category for his fast actions when a customer went into labour on his bus.

Across 2023, Lothian delivered over 110 million customer journeys, which represented a 17% increase from 2022. As a result, Lothian was able to return a dividend of £3.2m to shareholders.

Lothian was also awarded the Gold Employer Recognition Scheme Award from the MoD and picked up the silver award in the Employer of the Year category at the Scottish Veterans Awards.

In September 2023, Lothian announced an investment of over £24m for 50 fully electric double deck buses from Volvo, to underpin its ‘Driving Towards Net Zero’ strategy. The first of these vehicles entered service on the 8 September this year.

In addition, Lothian trained 450 drivers across 2023 with East Coast buses driver Thomas Gilhooley securing first place at the UK Bus Driver of the Year Finals in Blackpool last month.
