Digby’s full name was Edward Essex Digby Morse Boycott (only Boycott was the surname) but he legally changed it in December 1891 to Edward Essex Digby, presumably after the word came into the English language following Charles Boycott’s involvement in the Irish Land War in the late 19th century. Digby was himself of Irish descent.
Digby had a distinguished military career. He first served in the 21st infantry and transferred to the 14th Hussars as a Lieutenant in 1861 and by the time he left the Army in 1868 he had attained the rank of Captain. After the Army it would appear that he joined the legal profession. In 1902 Edward was a member of the Bath Golf Club and two years earlier he had taken part in the handicap event at the Paris Olympics but his gross score of 103, net 88, put him well out of medal places. He died in Paris and is buried at the cemetery at Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of the French capital.
