The Dell PowerEdge R520 is a flexible computing platform suitable for a number of common uses and data-intensive business applications. This two-socket PowerEdge server can meet the needs of both large and small data center environments and easily scale as your business needs change.
The Dell PowerEdge R520 server offers two-socket performance and features a balanced performance to storage ratio for data-intensive applications. The 2u design supports up to two Intel Xeon v2 processors, DDR3 memory modules, and 4 PCI slots for attaching additional NICs and HD controllers. This system is designed for a variety of different workloads including consolidation and virtualization, database applications, business analytics, web serving and hosting, and many other applications.
Intel's C600 series chipset supports up to two Intel Xeon E5-2400 or E5-2400 v2 processors. DDR3 memory and PCIe 3.0 technology increase reliability and availability.
Each processor on the Dell R520 supports six memory slots. In a two processor configuration the system supports up to 12 DDR3 DIMM modules, which is four more memory slots than the previous generation PowerEdge R510. With all twelve slots loaded with 32GB memory modules the system supports up to 384GB—three times the amount of memory of its predecessor! Both Registered (RDIMM) and unbuffered (UDIMM) DDR3 memory modules are supported.
Up to 8 x 3.5-inch or 8 x 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS/SATA SSDs or HDDs can be installed on the system, which is less than the R510 but with increased storage capacities you won't notice the difference. A dual SD card module provides a redundant failsafe for a hypervisor when used in mirror mode.
Four expansion PCIe slots are available in both the single and dual processor configurations. However, with a dual processor configuration all slots are PCIe 3.0. With a one processor configuration you get three PCIe 3.0 slots and a single PCIe 2.0 slot.
The PowerEdge R520 supports Dell's OpenManage systems management suite of tools. OpenManage Essentials is pre-installed with basic iDRAC7 with Lifecycle controller. Administrators can upgrade to iDRAC7 Essentials or Enterprise which will also activate vFlash media of 8GB to 16GB and a multitude of other management tools.
The Dell PowerEdge R520 server is a very capable 2U, mid-range system with the density and performance to support a number of common business applications. Hot-swap hard drives and power supplies ensure the system stays up and running in the event of a failure and provides an added layer of data protection.
