Dice and Die Notation, Explained
Various Dice and Die Notation are used for Dungeons and Dragons. Dice (singular Die) are used to determine various outcomes in encounters and action resolutions.
Two-Sided Dice

- Results to calculate 50%
Two-sided dice generally consist of a coin (heads or tails), or the results of any even-number dice capable of displaying odds or evens.
Four-Sided Dice
- Abbreviation D4
- Results to calculate 25%
Four-sided dice are tetrahedrons, with their results showing on the bottom vertices on three sides (the fourth side would not display the number show on the other three).
Six-Sided Dice
- Abbreviation D6
- Results to calculate 16.67%
Six-sided dice are cubes, with the result showing on the top face. Often used so much, that results calling for their usage may be abbreviated as "D" in some older publications.
Eight-Sided Dice

- Results to calculate 12.5%
Eight-sided dice are octohedrons, or two D4 "taped together". The result is shown on the top facing.
Ten-Sided Dice
- Abbreviation D10
- Results to calculate 10%
Ten-sided dice are decahedrons, with the result appearing on the top facing. Two D10s may be used as a cheap substitute for "D100", where a player or referee rolls the ones position digit first, then then tens position digit next (or vice versa).
