How to Get a War Horse
In Red Dead Redemption 2, the horses come in many breeds and coat styles - but each breed belongs to one of several categories that influence their attributes. In this guide, you will find all the possible ways to get a War Horse, whether it's through cheat codes or purchasing from particular stables.
Here's a complete list of all seven horse categories available:
- Riding Horses - Common horses with low attributes
- Draft Horses - Common horses that are slow with slightly higher attributes
- Race Horses - Faster horses that have slightly worse health and stamina
- Work Horses - Slow to accelerate horses with better stamina and health
- Superior Horses - Rare horses with better than average attributes
- War Horses - Extremely durable horses with lower speed and acceleration
- Multi-Class Horses - Rare horses that combine two different classes
War Horses are a rarity in the world of Red Dead Redemption, but there are a few sure ways to obtain one; see the different ways below.

Pre-Order Bonus
If you have the pre-order bonus for the Ultimate Edition of the game or otherwise obtained a code for a War Horse, you can enter the code to get one to appear - but it won't just spawn next to you.
Once you are in the game, you must reach Chapter 2 and help out Hosea Matthews with the Mission: Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego. Once Hosea leads you to the stables at Valentine, you'll be able to check the stock of horses, and only those who have the pre-order bonus will find the Ardennes horse in the stable that cost 0 dollars to purchase.
The Adrennes horse has an Iron Grey Roan coat, and is a War Horse, which boasts better than average health and stamina - so you can be sure it will survive a tumble or a fight.
Purchasing War Horses
Few Stables in the world sell War Horses, but they cost a lot of money (ranging from over $100 to $400!), and some only become available after specific chapters. War Horses encountered at stables include:
- Adrennes - Scarlett Meadows Stable
- Andalusian - Strawberry Stable, Van Horn Stable

Taming Wild Horses
There is one breed of horse that's classified as a War Horse that can also be found in the wild and tamed, though they often have lower stats than those in bought in stables. The following War Horses can be found in the wild:
- Hungarian Half-Bred: Found in Northern Blackwater or West of Tap to Reveal
RDRD 2 War Horse Cheat Code
There are numerous Cheat Codes in Red Ded Redemption 2, and while you are unable to save your game after applying a cheat code, you can use them to spawn a War Horse if you so desire.
However, some codes - like the code to spawn a War Horse, can only be entered if you have found the cheat code printed in the world. In this case, you must purchase a newspaper after completing the events of the Epilogue.
To enter cheat codes in Red Dead Redemption 2, pause the game, select SETTINGS and press TRIANGLE (on PlayStation 4) or Y (on Xbox One) to enter the Cheats menu. Enter a code from the list below.
To spawn the War Horse, enter the code "You are a beast built for war."
Once you enter a code, you'll see a message confirming that you've unlocked the cheat -- and if you save your game, you won't have to enter it again. Then you can toggle the cheat OFF or ON in the Cheats menu.
