The Future Is Wild (2003)
Unique premise ,great execution.
This without a doubt one of the most interesting premises in a documentary and the team of scientists, designers and animators did a splendid job in order to create these creatures.
Apart from the first episode which just a quick summary of watch this series is about, the rest of the episodes are quit well made, with each of the giving us a different environment and creatures which inhabit and what they did in order to survive in that conditions and of course different animals and some plants to.
If I had an issue with the series it would be that is showing a bit of a limited number of creatures per episode, whoever this only a small complain and in truth if they were more it may was difficult to follow the documentary.
As for the designs there-selves as we go further and further in to the future they become even more alien to our eyes and bizarre to the point that they seem more some from science fiction ,but if you look around then these adaptations make total sense and it a testament to the work that was put in here.
Over all there aren't many documentaries that try to think how would the animals and plants be in the coming ages and this is by far the most well known and perhaps the best example of speculation done right.
To teleftaio simeioma (2017)
The best war movie/drama in recent years!
When I saw the trailer for this film I was amazed by the high production value and the serious tone the film had ,with out been overly dramatic nor it had ludicrous scenes.
To the film itself ,it focuses on the execution of the inmates in in Kaisariani, as reprisal for the Greek Resistance ambush against Nazis. In the film we see how violent and predatory were the occupation forces as well as the willingness of all of the population either to fight back or support those who fight back. And when it comes to the execution it is portrait in a very mature and emotional manner.
As for historical accuracy, top notch truly the director and his team put a lot of effort in order to be faithful to the events and shows what the people of my country, Greece were willing to do for resisting to the foreign occupiers. As for the main point of view character Napoleon Soukatzidis, I love that he is neither a bad-ass nor a leading figure, he is just a significant yet small part of that story and I appreciated that interpretation.
Over all this film is the best that the Greek cinema has made in ages and I hope that this just the first of many to come.
Judge Dredd (1995)
Love Stallone ,but this film isn't any good.
I am a big fan of Sylvester Stallone ,however I have no issue saying that this film is very good ,the acting, the style of the mega-city and as for faith- fullness in the comic let's leave it at that.
Thsi film could been at least decent ,but the thought to make it such a loud any cliché action film was beyond fluid and down right baffling. As for Stallone in the lead role... well he was and still is a good action star ,but in this film he is just a over the top policeman and not the iconic antihero we all know and love. His portrait makes difficult for me to take him serious ,with his corny manners.
As for the plot well it is a interesting thought to use maybe the most famous story arc of the Judge, but though they hit all the needed points , the tension and the way is done cuts out every sense of suspense and shock.
Over all this film is a good example of a comic-book film of the nineties, when big studios just learned how big is the comic audience and try to capitalize on the success of 1989 Batman, with out first figuring out what made it so good or what made the comic so beloved and of course which characters are the truly iconic like Batman, Wonder Woman ,Spiderman and not Spawn or Steel.
Agelastos petra (2000)
Let's be brief in order to give a good and comprehensive analysis.
In English the name is "The laugh-less stone" and it is a stone in Eleusina and it was sacred for it was part of the Greek mythology. As for the area that this documentary takes place, Eleusina is one of the most industrialized places in Attica and Greece in general and at same time one of the most historic places for this area is linked with the Classical Greece.
And the main themes, which are depicted in a very mature and subtle way is the clash between the ever consuming way of our modern life (or in this case the nineties, but he same can apply even for today) and the traditions of the area and the progress against the preservation of our past. And especial weight is put out the stories of the people who live in this area, during the decade that this documentary was in the making, and there are quit fascinating for you can get why they are concern not only the older generation, but the youth as well.
This is an issue for many cities in Greece as most cities have been built literary over the ancient remains ,with little or no planing so it is common place to see for instance train stations side by side part of ancient rode.
Over all it is highly recommended and if you want to see how Greek society is the way it is this is a good point of reference.
Anonymous (2011)
Fun fiction of a hypothesis .but the rest feels flat.
The film is good looking, the setting is great and quit faithful for the era and even the idea of tackling the ownership of Shakespeare plays, though ,a bit a stretch, could make of fascinating promise. And this is all the good parts of this film.
As for the rest the intrigue after a while becomes more and more absurd to the point that I thought "wait a minute from where did that came from?" Also it was strange that the focus was to the backroom work all the time and not to the work itself of how to make the plays and the manner of the birth of plays that we enjoy still today is boring, for the freaking Shakespeare! OK I get the is the Renaissance and the back- door plays were the norm ,but what about character development?
If anything this film proves the Emmerich was a one hit wander with Independece day and Stargate and considering what has produced after 1996 the less is better.
All in all skip this film it is worthless in both ideas and it seems that it tries to ruin the legacy of of of history greatest storytellers.
Samurai Jack (2001)
Time travel, samurai, post apocalypse and a fitting closing!
If I had to choose my favorite series of Cartoon Network then Samurai Jack would take the first place easily. This series mixed the samurai, with the post apocalypse and Tartakovsky and his team put their lives and souls to make perhaps the first animated series apart from anime with a truly cinematic feel.
When I heard that the series would continue and end this year I hoped that the last 10 episodes would do justice to Jack and not only they did it but the series was stronger than ever and the ending though a bit rushed was fitting for a series like that. It has both a satisfying conclusion but also a feel of closing for you realize that this is it!
As for the travels Jack had not a single one of the places he visited felt like a functional environment with culture, history ,even their own ecosystems and all that in just 25 minutes. The same applies to the characters Jack and we encounter ,they are quit memorable and some have backstories that will put your heart strings.
To the fighting itself ,amazing it has been more than a decade that Jack was missing but his style and the struggles he has to pull through are the stuff of legends ,like the impact he has to each place he visits as we see in the final season. And as for the villain Aku ,the main villain has one of them most sadistic and at the time funny personality and this two aspect plain-ed excellently.
In the end this series was part of my childhood and I remember it funnily and now that has a conclusive end I also fill like a part of my younger self had a conclusion about something that he loved to watch ,unlike with Prehistoric Park, Primeval, Justice League Unlimited, Wolverine and the X-men, Spiderman (1994) and Kyle XY.
The Defenders (2017)
Fine but I expected more from this cross-over.
We have seen the first cross-over of superheroes in the big screen five years ago and now Marvel does again another cross-over but this time are the heroes of the television series Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist so is it any good?
Well yes it is quit entertaining and the action is top notch and the interaction with the characters is very interesting and the twist and turns of the series as well as the built up for the continuations of the Netflix series was well handled. As for the return of Elektra well this was a roller-coaster and her interaction with Mat was both interesting and heart-breaking.
However this cross-over isn't without issues, firstly the Iron Fist is disappointing and the actor has zero charisma and nest to his fellow Defenders he is the weakest link and honesty his sidekick could better the him. Another part the wasn't great was the villains, OK the Hand was a force to be recount with and Sigourney Weaver gave a good performance as usual, however I never felt the fear and danger as against Killgrave and Kingpin nor the intrigue of the villains of Luke Cage. Also due to the fact the series has only 8 episodes it feels at times a bit rushed and they could give to each episode five to ten minutes more time in order to fix these issues.
Nevertheless these issues don't break the series and I am glad that after the CW cross-over of its heroes we got this one and now I am pretty sure we are going to see a battle in the Internet about the best TV cross-over of 2017 and this time will not be as clear cut as with BvS and Civil War.
Overall if you are a defender fan you should check out this series and the same applies for the fans of the Netflixtv series as well myself included.
Funny Games (1997)
With limited cash and a lot of effort you can make something good.
Many persons want to go in to the film industry but they usually hit the wall of big studios and the need of funds. And the independent films is a way for them to cut their teeth in and if the director, acting crew and writing team use what they have in the best way then you can get something like the now famous examples of Evil Dead(1981) , Reservoir Dogs(1992) ,Mad Max(1977), Memento (2000), The Terminator (1984) and many more and this film is also in to this category.
The experienced TV director Micheal Haneke tried for the first time to direct of feature film and using his limited resources he made this small but very well paced, chilling film. In short he used his experienced working on a TV set which lacks usually space in to make feel the stress, fear and shock about this home invasion.
Another great part of the film are the antagonists especially Arno Frisch due to his attitude and intelligence that makes him both intimidating dispute his slender physic and the plump body of his friend.
Over all it is a very good independent film and I recommended to very film buff.
Dunkirk (2017)
We shall at the beaches but at first we need to get out and fast of a beach.
Clocking in in just one hour and forty five minutes long this the shortest film ever produced by Christopher Nolan after the Following his first feature film way back in 1998. Still in this short time you get five to six different perspectives about the Dunkirk's Evacuation during the first days of WW2 and the stress and fear the was in the air during these days.
Through out the duration of the film you feel that time is in short supply and at any moment a bomb, a bullet or a torpedo will come and kill more soldiers who are trapped like fishes in a barrow and if this army is lost then the war will be over in a moments notice with the Nazis victorious! So Nolan and his team had a very difficult work to do and in all honesty they not only manage to make a good film but actually a great flick, boy after the Inglorious Bastards WW2 has came in full force in the cinema, I can't be more happy about that!
The only thing that wasn't outstanding was the acting ,the actors did their part flawlessly, no doubt about that, however there wasn't any performance the stole the show. And that is fine for this was a story about surviving a insufferable situation and the heroic efforts of military personnel and common civilians who at times went above and beyond to save the stranded army there. As for effects, cinematography, authenticity and historical accuracy ,outstanding ,no other word can describe it best the work that was put here.
Also the one thing that stuck with me was the music which reminded me a lot a ticking clock and filled me with fear and anxiety about what would happened next because if this army was lost then France and especially Britain would have zero capacity on continuing the war so it was a big deal at this point.
In the end when the film was ending we got the famous speech by Winston Churchill and his remark that there is along way ahead of them with this conflict and the end. Although abrupt the end is totally in mud with the situation at hand "Yes we saved our soldiers, but with evacuation you can't win Wars".
Overall this film dispute not been as brutal and bloody as Hacksaw Ridge of the previous year is still an excellent WW2 film like the Ridge and what can I say, Mr Nolan you are a magician in the director chair!
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
Cute beyond any doubt and something about me.
There are few things to say about this 40 year old film and now I believe it is the best time for that. When I was a little ball (I was quit fat as a kid) I constantly watch everything related with this cute honey loving bear and it wasn't for nothing. As for this film I can't remember how many times I have watch it but I am pretty sure it is close to a dozen.
For though it is ground breaking or revolutionary in the story department it is cute ,funny, calm and quit relaxing and if you were like me in my youth ,I had a lot of stress and I needed something to put my always working brain at ease. Safe to say that this film fulfill that goal perfectly.
To add a last thing the designs of the places and the characters are so cute that I want to hang them right now as I am writing this review.
If you have little children now and you want then to watch something relaxing before going to sleep then that film will do the job.
Carrie (1976)
How bullying and puberty affect a person.
Carrie is one of the most iconic horror film in history and De Palma directing and shooting makes you understand everything by the images and cinematography ,how the characters feel, why they feel like that. The result is you can understand their actions through the film and their motivations, though at times a bit shallow, you can get why they do it.
Also Brian De Palma shows very well the working of the senior high school students, from the unnamed hierarchy, to the cruelty the teens are capable off it goes with out saying if you had a difficult years in school you will sympathize with Carrie and even rude for her. An other thing worth mentioning is that the cruelty in house and at school can twist the way a person sees things and in the final scene of the infamous school dance we see that in a very realistic and disturbing manner.
As for the subject of puberty is demonstrated by the telekinetic powers Carrie gains after her first Luteal phase. And gradually she starts to disobey her religiously fanatical mother, accepting complements as a good thing and even dancing with her cavalier. However there is and a dark side to that : she can now pretty easily hurt anyone how hurts her physically or emotionally and it is dangerous as innocent people may and do get in the cross fires.
In general puberty is depicted like a new power coming out from the person and there two bad outcomes from it :When it isn't put in check becomes cruelty (seen in the girls bullying Carrie). The other possibility is when it comes in the hands of a person who was continuously bullied then the tables are turned and the hunted becomes the hunter, basically the quote of Nietzsche "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." becomes a reality ,just showing that the goodness and kindness how can be lost and even the most cruel maybe they do it just to get respect like in high school of instance.
OK I will close mist analyses here for I may over did it. However this is a great adaptation of Steven King and perhaps the most faithful book-to-film take from all the films and series that have been based from his work so far ,together with the Green Mile, Misery and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
The Karate Kid (1984)
One of the classics underdog's stories
More than thirty years later the original Karate Kid still holds up pretty well and inspires people to defend themselves from bullies, trust unorthodox tactics and respect someone of different race origin and ideas.
The story follows our senior-high school students , Daniel-san (sorry I couldn't resist) as he is bullied and then he meet an older karate teacher Mr. Miyagi who agrees to train him in both karate and in life lessons at the same time. Their friendship evolves over the duration of the film and it feels natural as due to their experiences they have both suffered loses of loved ones and they found what was missing from their lives in each other.
As for the fight scenes they are fine and nicely capture by the camera but nothing else and compared with modern-day martial arts films or even the martial arts film of Hong-Kong through the years they are quit lacking. However is the story and emotional investment to the characters that really stick you in the fighting. Also the training montages are expertly made and the music is iconic beyond any doubt.
Over all a general assessment of the film would be "Dated, but still enjoyable and in the end iconic " and to say the truth they shouldn't have been a series of films what-so-ever.
Voitheia o Vengos, faneros praktor '000' (1967)
The Greek parody of James Bond and way better than Austin Powers.
I have nothing against the first Austin Powers film, but I have to say that with less budget ,tools and location ,Thanasis Vegos made some of the best spy comedies of all time with this one and its sequel.
Simply put everything from the slapstick, to the one-liners and the events that take place all are amazing directed and put of film for future generation to laugh their asses out.
Vegos was by far the best comedian in the film industry of Greece and here he is at his prime. This one of these films that has to be analyzed in film schools in order to teach how to make a comedy.
If you consider yourself a master of the comedy genre then you have to watch this film asap!
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010)
Personal Favorite Justice League film up to now.
Crisis on two Earths is about the main Justice League going after another Justice League , from another universe in which they are the bad guys. I have to say these stories are some of my favorites for makes you think you heroes in different light and not taking for granted that for instance that just the experiences of Batmanturned him into the hero we all know and love.
In general the story is very interesting and I really like the dynamic of the parallel world as it shows something which I have to see it since Injustice and the episode Justice League "A Better World" ,the Justice League is a force which can rule the world and their good intentions is the reason why they don't.
Also the portrait of Martian Manhunter was pitch perfect and I still look forward for him to take a live-action treatment.
Over all a very enjoyable film ,I recommended to every DC fan.
Justice League: Doom (2012)
Perhaps the worst day of the Justice League.
This is loose adaptation of the story of the same name and I have to say this is one of the best Justice League story-lines around for it shows two things: one that when the villains can coordinate their attacks they are a force to be record with and the paranoia of Batman is a both his best weapon as he has a plan for everything and as it was shown here a weakness as it doesn't allow him to work well with others.
As for the title of this review, well the team has faced a lot of crazy and dangerous event over the years ,but none of that was made with the precision of a surgeon to kill them. That is why this is maybe the worst day of the core members of the Justice League for never in their career they didn't face such a attack on them.
In general the film it very fast pace, and it keeps you in interested all the way. I ,honesty, don't expect the Justice League film of this autumn to be a good as this one.
In general it is a very well made story, great animation and in my point of view the best model for Metallo ever put in a video movie ,or a TV series animated or live action.
If you want to see an old-fashion Justice League story ,like those from the Hustice League and Justice League Unlimited, then this a flick for you
Wacky Races (1968)
One of the first examples of a cross-over.
Wacky Races is thin on plot, character and scenario. It is in fact just all the major characters of Hanna Barbera studio racing against each other.
But the main driving,no pun intended isn't the scenario or the characters in the series, they were all known up to that point. The main show is a classical ,yet less violent, who would win in a fight or in this case a race.
And I have to say it was exciting to see each team uses its own different methods to gain a edge against the other ones. As for the tricks they were in line with the style of their teams.
Over all this one great cross-over and you can enjoy it easy with all its slap-stick and fun and to add that see a first example of cross- over of beloved characters in our culture, which seems to have become an stable and obsession of modern day entertainment.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Yes we are like that to be honest.
This film shows in a very realistic manner who a Greek family works, yes it is a bit over-exaggerated ,but in general this what you see in typical Greek family. And the list is as follows
Overly protective mothers, fathers who can't see the contradiction in their words and actions, grandmothers who cool like crazy, grandfathers who love to the point of ridiculous their grandchildren ,cousins we don't want to talk to, aunts who act weird and uncle who either say the best or worst jokes or even both of them (don't ask).
As for the pride and comedy ,100% correct, that kind of cruel and immature jokes are rare but when they come be aware everyone is a target. To the pride well, we are pompous loud and we have a problem with our temper, just kidding ,we have close to zero control of it ^__^.
But when it comes to family matters ,you see this kind, emotional and lovable side in the film , yes there are fights inside ,but when puss comes to shove, we got each others backs.
Overall it is good comedy ,with a lot of laugh and a nice inside look of a Greek family from a non-Greek, and the sequel is a piece a #$@$@!.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
Unexpected but well earned! Also a moment for the first Caped Crusader.
I would never believe that the animated superhero movies would return to the big screen but after Big Hero Six and now this film I will say that ,they have returned and they are in a rolling!
So in this film we see a great and needed satire for the Caped Crusader, which in a very clever way shows us what would do years of continuous work and isolation to psychology of a man. At the same time we have every time of joke imaginable from references to cameos to four wall ones as well.
In general everyone did a fantastic work in the voice acting and in the animation department. To add there another thing that I must address, this film is in fact the acceptance of the now late Adam West version of Batman, the so-called Bright Crusader, to the general culture as a great chapter in the history of Batman like the 1989 film, the Animated series and the Nolan trilogy . In short we can now safely say that the 1966 Batman is good.
To be honest this light-heartiness was necessary after the BvS extreme bruiting and overly dramatic attempt which missed the real reason why Batman and Superman are so loved.
Is this movie perfect? To me now the third act is a bit lacking, however this is my only complain and you should definitely watch it.
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Years and decades later and still holds up.
Finally I reached the ground zero of one of the most historic and iconic science fiction series of all time and now examining it, is a great experience and a true journey trough time as this film will become 50 years old in 2018.
Also what is also astonishing is that the effects and makes still hold up. As for the story it holds up so well ,because it is so simple, a group of astronauts crash lands in to a strange place were humans are mute act like animal and apes rule. There and during the film we see critics of religion, prejudice, reaction of the established order to keep itself in power and one of the greatest plot twist in film history.
That's all I have to write about this film, for let's be real many critics in both the press and Youtube have gave much more analytic and in depth looks for this film and I have been partially inspired by them and use some of their notices.
Overall this film must be in everyone list of films to see before you die.
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
Zerox a success and hope for the best...not!
Boy that reverse time travel is a bit exhausting as you have to put your memories in a reverse order and then start putting together your thoughts about the film. But with this one this isn't so difficult as as it is for the two thirds of the film a copy of the original, with only the third part be an interesting, yet weird idea.
In general after the massive success was the Planet of the Apes, the studios rushed in order to capitalize to this new trend (seem familiar, we see that even nowadays). In general the film does the minimum best in order to be differed by the 1968 flick and in all honest fells quit generic. James Franciscus does his best ,but he has no room and lacks the charisma of Charlton Heston and when Heston is himself in the screen he does a good job ,but he obviously wants to be somewhere else.
It is common knowledge that he asked the director to kill off his character in order to get out of the studios control and I have to say the manner that he manage that is so big that if all when according to his wishes this would the final Planet of the Apes film, but a good cash cow is necessary for the industry and we got another three sequel, a re-imagining (#Iwanttovomit) and a reboot trilogy.
In conclusion the only reason to watch this film is if you do a marathon of the movies of this franchises, but if you are a casual person who likes films, skip it.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
Quit a weird way to bring a franchise back in action ,but it worked!
Well after the critical under performance of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, we go to Escape, when in the today's world (seventies) a spacecraft crash lands and three talking chimpanzees come out, the two are Zira and Cornelius from the first two films.
I have to say this film is weird and the creators definitely knew that and so the whole thing is a examinations of our ape heroes and their origin, which is surprising both thoughtful and interesting pointing out also the predestination paradox, theories of who a civilization is created and then more or less forgets its origins, which is not uncommon, see the Greek, Hindu, Egyptian and Chinese civilizations, they existed for so long that even they have little to no clue how they came to be.
Also we see the beginning of the humans anxiety correlated with the seeming danger of them been replaced by the smart apes. So this film is both a sequel and a prequel and it is difficult putting the time-line in order. Again we see another repeat of history here, with the X-men films, another franchise in which the time-line of events is fussy to say the least and flipping confusing to be brutally honest.
Overall an enjoyable film and by default in the top 3 of the original trilogy as the previous installment and Battle aren't very good as movies overall.
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
Obvious analogue of the issues of the era.
Continuing our journey back to the past we now reach the one of the two good sequels of the original film, conquest and I have to say when I first saw it I like it more than any other of the rest of the series apart from the original.
So here we follow the child of Zera and Cornelius, Maylo/Ceasar who during the 88 minutes of the film he becomes the leading figure of the Ape resistance in a dystopian version of the nineties,in which people rule and use Apes as slaves and pets. Even if your historical knowledge is average you can clearly see who the problems that rocked the American society to its core in the late sixties and early seventies with the riots and the violence on the streets as the segregation between white and African-American came to a close.
Is it a perfect translation? Well, no actual the film is at times to fast pace and things take place a bit to quickly in order to get full invested to the characters and the start of the Ape revolt, but at least we have no slow moment to weight down the film. To add to that this speed keeps the interest about hat is happening.
Over all it is a product of its time and though heavy handed and a light campy nowadays, it is has a punch and if you are a fan of these films you should definitely watch.
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
Good message, but fall on its face.
Reviewing now one of the original films feels like a travel trough time and when watching an older film or series I believe it is essential to know a bit of back ground of watch you watching to judge it accordingly.
So in battle we meet the original Ceasar who now is the ruler of a society in which Apes and Humans co-exist, but unlike the previous film the Apes are in charge, however under to magnanimous Ceasar peace exist. But this peace may not last as some Apes start to believe that maybe it is better to kill the humans. Also there are and some humans outside the society of Ceasar, and so I think we have battle, even though we see that the war ended, whatever.
In general though the title sounds cool, we don't get a lot of combat and what we see is a half asked message about how personal bias and blind anger can treat a society and conclude to a war. Clearly inspired by the Vietnam War of the era ,who was at its last days.
Now why this one is the the weakest is due to budget cuts, angry parents why said the previous film was too violent (stupid parents always ruin everything) and inconsistencies in the plot with the rest of the franchise. As for the message well the manner it is presented is too on the noise and in way a class teacher may presented so is a interesting as it sounds.
If something good came out of this one and Conquest is that about four decades latter when they wanted to remake the Ape films the used the ideas from this one and presto Rise, Dawn and War came out, which are excellent.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Brief overview of this disaster.
I won't spend much time reviewing this film for in all honesty many critics have done that better than i could ever do it. This only a brief take to a unmitigated disaster.
This film was one of the the most hyped of its era and it was thought that it could do it. A great director, a cast full of Oscar winner and nominees and extremely well made visuals and make-up, so what when bananas and made this film so bad?
For ones it is almost the same with the original, second dialogue that makes me wish to be deaf, third a stiff acting and finally one of the most idiotic ending in film history. I honestly am unable to say anything more .
If something is to be said is that this film destroyed the reputation of Tim Burton as a great director and from this point on he is but a shadow of his former glory, many actors reputation was stained by that film and it took them years to come back in to the spotlight.
However in all this disaster there is one good thing that came out: A guide of how not to make a remake ,which future directors and studios can uses in order to make good films and I believe that it has help ,if the new trilogy of the Planet of the Apes films is any indication.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Primates rising!
After the disaster the remake of Planet of the Apes of 2001 was, a decade later this was the next try in order for the series to start again and this time paid of and we now have a trilogy of these films. This one and the two next take inspiration more from the latter film of the original series (mainly Conquest and Battle), which they weren't very good to be honest and did their own thing.
In the story we follow the now iconic chimpanzee Ceasar from his early days to the beginning of the events that started to fall of our society. This start comes from a try of us to cure brain diseases ,but when tested to Apes ,it has the unexpected outcome of making them smart to a point that match a humans intelligence. In short this is both a prequel of the 1968 film and a remake of the how we ended with that society.
In general what I praise of that film is how it tackles one of the most baffling problem of humanity, how would we treat a creature of similar or even equal intelligent level which doesn't fit our definition of what is a human or a clever being in general. And if you have seen a lot of sci-fi series and movies you may have noticed the uncanny similarities between the alien and us, this no coincidence and I don't have to mention the manner of the treatment we did to our fellow human when they were different from us.
In general this how a remake should be done, both being faithful to the themes of the original and at same time doing it in a different way. Also there is and a third idea from my point f view, do remakes of films that weren't very good or they are now dated to a point they look ridiculous ,however they had an idea which could be used and make a great film, this film is a great example, the Thing of 1982 is also and the Fly of Croneberg.
Overall is a very well made film and manage to introduce this franchise to the new generation and re-kindle the interest of the older fans.
