Lights Out with David Spade (2019)
I Loved it
I'm reviewing this after watching the premier episode, and the caveat here is that I'm already a big fan of David Spade's acting and comedy- and comedy as a whole- so I naturally loved this show. The premise is putting a comedic spin on current events and pop culture. His guests were funny, and there was plenty of improv. I look forward to more of this.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Best series ever!
Held off watching this because of negative reviews, and what a mistake. Tense, gripping, first-class acting all around. I can't say enough good things about this series, other than I watched the first two seasons in three days, and when I wasn't watching, I was thinking about it. Now I'm going to read the book, and am eagerly awaiting Season 3 in a few days. For a reference point, my other favorite series are: The Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Curb Your Enthusiasm. My favorite movies are Jackie Brown, Django, M*A*S*H, Dr. Strangelove. My standards are very high, and THT checks every box. Please don't listen to the negative reviews- those reviewers do not know quality film.
After Life (2019)
Ten stars all the way
Great acting (everyone, not just the leads), great cinematography. It's both funny and sad. Ricky Gervais is charming, witty, touching, and snarky- everything you love about him, and more. Sheds light on something we're all going to have to deal with sooner or later. A definite must-see.
Les frères Sisters (2018)
Must see
Excellent movie. I'd give it way more than 10 stars if I could. I can't even go into what a great movie this is, just see it. I cannot possibly understand why it did so bad at the box office, but I will say we never heard anything about it when it was released; we'd have loved to see it at the theater.
Murder Mountain (2018)
Really good
This doc captures not only the true crime facet, but also the problems with black and white market marijuana farming in California, which is proving to be the testing ground for the rest of the country. Ten stars all the way- was hooked from the opening scene.
Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018)
Laughed and cried
Laughed at virtually every joke and song, and even cried during a couple of touching tributes. 10+++++++ stars.
Hold the Dark (2018)
I don't understand the bad reviews...
I really enjoyed this. It was a professional, well-made movie, the acting was first-rate, and the cinematography was breathtaking. The story isn't laid all out for you nice and neat and easy, and I think that's where some are having issues. I didn't go into it with big expectiations, and it was the perfect movie for a chilly fall Sunday night. Just relax and enjoy it.
Insatiable (2018)
Pretty funny
The humor is adult, they swear like normal people, and anyone that spent their school years in the fringes will understand the emotions the main character is going through. There's nothing to get upset about in this series, so pop some corn, grab a fizzy drink, and just settle down and enjoy this comedy (that will also provide some 'pause and think' moments as you apply her experiences to your own life).
Master of None (2015)
Love this series
I don't know how many reviews I've written on iMDb, but pretty sure it's less than five. I love this series so much, I had to pause it to write this review.
I love Aziz Ansari's comedy, but wasn't sure I'd like a series with him. I was bored, trolling Netflix for something to watch, read it had won some awards, and went for it. Man, am I glad.
It's not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it's 'I can relate' soft chuckle material. It's 'wow- that's so true' funny. It's heartwarming, it's sweet, it addresses real-life issues in today's world. It's mellow, it's calm, it's relaxing, with just enough stressful situations to keep you interested. I love it.
I Love Dick (2016)
Loved
The only reason I give this 9 stars is because I wasn't quite compelled to watch the entire season in one sitting (was two episodes shy), but that doesn't take away from how much I loved it. Also, I haven't texted everyone I know about it, because it's not a series for everyone, which also puts it in the 9 stars category.
Until now I've been a lukewarm Kathryn Hahn fan, but she was great in this, and changed my opinion of her acting completely.
Ditto with Kevin Bacon. I never saw him as a sex symbol before (and I grew up during the Footloose era), but hot damn, he was smokin' in this.
This is a series for feminist womyn. I do believe plenty of men would like it, but I doubt your rough and tumble beer-swigging, crotch-scratchers would find one second of it interesting. It's full of liberal-minded characters, some who smoke pot, some who are lesbians, some who experienced same-sex sex in 70's drug-induced states.
Take-away: If you're a right-winged Republican Christian, take a pass. Everyone else with an open mind who enjoys artsy pieces with lots of sex and nudity, as well as dialog that makes you pause the show so you can absorb the multitude of "lightbulb moments" it triggers within your own life, I highly recommend it.
