White Noise (2022)
it is just white noise
Don't waste your time. Incredible annoyingly stupid dialogue. The story goes absolutely nowhere. I don't understand the appeal of Driver. Cheadle is lost in there somewhere. Way too much time spent on Hitler and Elvis. I guess it is adapted from a novel. Maybe it works better in print. I guess it is supposed to be surrealistic but nothing happens. I guess it is supposed to be funny but that never happens. It was painful but I kept watching but had to keep fast forwarding through long scenes that went nowhere. It just went nowhere. I thought it was going to be a type of apocalypse movie about toxic air but that went nowhere. Skip it.
It Comes at Night (2017)
I'm sure there are worse movies...
But right now I can't think of.one. I was wondering who would be the first to call it a masterpiece of horror and give it a 10. It is not. Watched it last night and kept waiting for something clever to happen. What was out there?? A zombie? A monster? A spirit? A virus? Characters spit up blood now and then. My wife said "oh no, not a dog....you know what happens to dogs in these movies". Yes, the family has a dog and she was right and I don't consider that a spoiler. Edgerton's non acting style is wearing thin. Just when the movie was going absolutely nowhere with no questions answered I said "The End" and it was...roll credits. Infuriating.
Almost the entire movie is set in a dark house, very bleak. Seems like it lasted much longer than the 90 minutes we wasted on it. Sorry....it was advertised.by Netflix in an e-mail as their best psychological thrillers so we are giving them a try....win some, lose some.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
excellent series....ignore the bad reviews
Anyone who is confused simply needs to watch and pay attention. The story does jump in time but easy to follow. Watch it...judge for yourself...but don't let the totally unjustified bad reviews turn you away.
Rocco Schiavone (2016)
perfect 10
An excellent series....best I've seen in a long time....give it a chance and you'll be hooked
L'amica geniale (2018)
Ignore all bad reviews....this is
A masterpiece. A big thank you to HBO. When I see comments like "stale" or "ugh" I actually feel sorry for the reviewers who have become so jaded by bad writing, bad acting, car chases and cgi that they missed the beauty of this story.
Evil (2019)
disappointed....
There was a two month tease leading up to the first episode and a few days before it aired I heard a review on NPR where the reviewer gushed about just how good it was....all the right buzz words....terrifying, scary, edge of your seat. First off, the whole idea of a woman struggling to raise four girls while her hubby is off mountain climbing is a bit off the wall. Then we meet the four girls.....constantly screaming, talking, laughing....noise. Katja Herbers is cute and a good actress but a mother of four kids? The special effects are good...especially the one with the kids and 3D glasses. Visits by George are disturbing. There have been a couple shocking scenes but nothing that is edge of your seat frightening. The character Leland just doesn't work for me. The addition of peter Scolari tells me that the show may be struggling relying on the three main characters. I am disappointed....expected much more.
Hereditary (2018)
not a 10....not a masterpiece....not even close
The reviews for this movie were so wildly extreme and polarized that I decided to read reviews and spoilers while watching it.....a first for me. Anyone who thinks this is a "masterpiece", without being a pretentious twit, either scares easily or is a teenager. Giving it a 1/10 is a bit harsh. It is a bad movie. Poorly made, poorly written, poorly directed, poorly filmed but there was some money put into special effects and the acting, for the most part, is good. Toni Collette has made a career or grimacing and overacting which she does well here. But I'll never watch another Collette movie. Someone asked why Gabrel Byrne took the job. Well, he is the executive producer so he is really in it for the money. Ann Dowd is always good, always creepy. Poor little Milly Shapiro chose the worst role of her young life. Some scenes are more repulsive than horror....or for a good horror film. Some scenes which are most disturbing are also the most ridiculous. The movie borrows heavily on sights and sounds from other horror films. Not an homage...more of a theft. Creepy sounds from The Shining, creepy scenes from forgotten Exorcist movies. The director seemed a bit obsessed with loss of heads. All in all, Hereditary is a mishmash of ideas and the movie doesn't know what type of horror film it wants to be. Is it a ghost story? It is satanic worship? Who knows? The ending wasn't infuriating. It wasn't shocking. It wasn't brilliant. It is what it is....ridiculous. It will just make you shake your head and think that you just wasted over two hours of your life.....like many other Netflix and Prime movies.
Escape at Dannemora: Part 6 (2018)
like throwing water in your face
Just as we kind of liked these two characters and going along for the escape, episode 6 shows who we are cheering on. It may have been Dano's boyish looks or thinking of Del Toro in other roles but whatever it was like somebody throwing a glass of ice cold water in your face. It brought us back to the reality of the reality of the event. Like others have stated...I really don't care for Stiller as a comedian but he has done an amazing job with this story.
