Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
Why the bait?
Why did they promote this show like it was going to be an adaptation of the books? I absolutely love the comic it's one my favourite book ever and was ecstatic to know we were getting an animated adaptation I thought finally people who watched the movie and didn't read the books would get a chance of seeing the original story with its characters development.
Calling that an adaptation tho does a disservice to the original material and to this show and I don't understand what's the point of changing the story like that. It's not like Scott Pilgrim is a well established franchise where everyone knows how the story go so putting a twist makes it interesting. I would've honestly watched any story around those books, but this just takes a story I love and pull it apart.
This just makes me sad.
Alex Rider: Assassin (2021)
Completely absurd
This show isn't lacking in terms of plot holes and lazy writing, but this episode is bringing it to a whole new level. All of season 2 is already a mess where characters lack of logic is served as an excuse to advance the plot, but this episode was by far the most incoherent. Also I'm convinced if drones worked like they did in that show that they have the be the most inefficient weapon of all time.
The Informer (2019)
Decent crime movie badly cut.
The movie is shot well most of the actors are doing a good job, the story while not particularly original is not boring either, if someone like crime movies it should lend right in their alley.
The problem is that the second part of the movie seem rushed, like its missing 30 minutes or something. There's even a full scene missing, not to get into details this is the type of scenes that can easily be cut in a super hero type movie for comedic purposes or to show how badass the character is, but in that type of movie it just seems out of place.
Ultimately that might be the problem with this movie, it show itself like a crime movie, but it presents the principal character like a possible superhero. It's like they set themselves up in a way that if the movie is a success they could just make sequels with increasingly unrealistic scenes like so many action movies franchises have been built.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It saves the series
That trilogy was going nowhere, but JJ managed to make sense of all the holes left by TLJ and he managed to join the previous trilogies stories with this one. Sure it's still kind of a mess and the movie felt rushed, but given the circonstances it was pretty damn good. I just wish he could've directed the whole series, it wouldn't have been perfect, but it would've been more solid. It won't satisfy everyone, but nothing would've at this point.
6 Underground (2019)
Just action
This movie is just about the action scenes, because there's really nothing else. What was the point? Who were those people and why they chose to do this? Why Turgistan? I have no idea. As for the action scenes, they are Micheal Bay so explosions, quick cuts and confusion. That's about it.
The Movies That Made Us (2019)
Nice idea poor execution
The narrator was the worst idea to could've had. This looks like something made by MTV in the early 2000's. I love behind the scenes info about movies, this was painful to watch.
Booksmart (2019)
It's visually appealing, it's a fun ride, but it's not really smart or clever.
This movie is trying really hard to be the new Superbad, problem is that we've seen it, it's also all over the place and strangely enough it looks even less realistic than Superbad. All the characters are caricatures it's seems to have been thought by someone who lived all their life in a gated community somewhere in L.A. and they got all their education from private teachers and then imagined what high school must've been like.
There's nothing totally horrible tho, actors are doing a really good job for the most parts and it has it's funny and touching moments, problem is it's full of clichés. The principal charm of the movie is in it's visuals, it's shot beautifully and that made the whole experience much more enjoyable.
I understand why someone who hasn't seen a lot of coming of age stories type/school graduation, might find it to be a really good movies. I tried to imagine how I would've felt about this movie when I was in high school and fact is I would've probably liked it a lot.
Since that's the audience, I believe they've done good, it just doesn't add to the genre.
Cooking on High (2018)
This is so bad.
Concept is nice, but the production, the host and the guest are horrible. It's made like a reality show and can be resumed to "woah dude weed is awesome man". No effort is put in presenting the food or cooking techniques. It's all the worst things about weed culture and reality tv shows. I feel bad for the chefs on the show.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Don't try looking smart when you're not.
Are just gonna forget she killed the two dancers in cold blood. The girl is a psycho to start the movie, than because of 1h+ of abuse we should forget all that and believe she's the good girl? Also how are we supposed to believe the ''love story''? Because they slept together? It's the most bland story of trust between two people.
I can say the cinematography was pretty good most of the time, but other than that I feel like they should've spend a lot more time on that script. I mean, can the Russian government of that movie be THAT stupid? Or the uncle, or the general, or her? Everyone is dumb except the mother. 80's and 90's action movies had better plot than this and they didn't need 2hours to get their message across. Actors look lost in the platitude of that script.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Not bad
After the Last Jedi, I didn't have much hope is Star Wars anymore, I still gave this one a chance and I have to say I had a good time, it wasn't incredible in any ways, but it was way better constructed than TLJ. There wasn't a lot of jump between different scenes, it was pretty much straight forward and followed a direction. It wasn't totally illogical, humour wasn't forced on us too much. There was a couple of twists that would be more fitting in a Marvel movie, but it didn't made me want to rip my eyes off. Other than that I was quite confused by the apparition of a popular star wars character in it, I feel like not much was done to justify or explain it's presence. All the majors characters were pretty good in their roles, especially Alden Ehrenreich he had huge shoes to fill and he did quite good, sure he's not Harrison Ford, but he played a less mature, less experienced version of the character Ford played and in that sense he nailed it. For me this movie is the movie that has the most OG Star Wars trilogy feel to it, Ron Howard did a pretty good job.
Black Panther (2018)
Is this what Marvel does best?
I don't watch much marvel movies or any super heroes movies, I used to liked them when they first started to become populars like the first X-men or the first Avenger. They were entertaining, funny and originals to a certain degree, they didn't reinvent the wheel of actions movies, but they pushed it to the limits. After a while though they became quite repetitive sometimes more than other, but with a movie every 6 months or so it's hard to follow without loosing interest. So this is where I stand, I enjoy action, I enjoy special effects, I enjoy Super heroes, but more than anything I like to be entertain.
It's basically 2 stories, first it's a heist movie disguised as a spy movie disguised as a superhero movie, after that it's the classic Disney prince story of king loose his kingdom, has to fight for it, meet resistance.
Sadly this movie wasn't quite entertaining sure it had pretty much all the check points of a big action movie... in fact any type of action movies: hand combat, sword fights, gun fights, army fights and space ships fights, car chase, spy gadgets, super heroes gadgets, casino meet up with the bad guys, illegal merchandise contraband, cia, spies, super soldiers, girl army, rhinoceros, etc.
Problem was the delivery was off on most of them, there was a LOT of things going on, they tried to do everything, while also introducing a team of 4+1 people + their aunts and uncles, 2 bad guys, 2 other tribes chiefs. It makes at least 9 characters to introduce and create a personality for them with screen time and dialogues, it doesn't work and we end up with pretty unidimensional characters with no depth. There was nothing original outside of it being in a fictional Africa, costumes where amazing by the way (I'm not talking about black panther per say).
Looking at some critics though I feel like it did absolutely what it needed to do, it realized the phantasms of most of the black audience. It was kind of a celebration of what any kid with some feeling of the weight of blacks oppressions over the years would like to happen to the black community. I think it really touch a sensible nerve with the black American community in that sense. For me it felt like just giving everything he wanted to the viewer. While being empowering in a sense it didn't gave much satisfaction cinematographically speaking.
It didn't bring anything new on the table, no character offered much possibly to get attached to except maybe the bad guy. In the end it felt really flat and soulless everything looked quite clinical (that's what happen when you shoot everything in front of green screens) and most character had the depth of a page of paper. Unless you're a big super hero movie, stay away from this movie, it's a forgettable effort.
The Dark Tower (2017)
Good action/adventure flick
All I've heard going before watching this movie was how bad of an adaptation of the book series it was. So I didn't gave it a chance and pretty much forgot about it, but tonight I had time and I thought ''why not'' and decided to watch it.
I have to admit I haven't read the books, so my opinion in judging if the Adaptation is good or not won't be there. I can just judge the movie for what I found it to be, an action/adventure movie and in that aspect the movie kept me intrigued, the main actors were all pretty good in their roles despite a lack of big characters arc development, the story line wasn't too complicated and there was enough fantastic in it to keep me interested. I can't help but feeling teenage me would have loved that movie much more than I did.
I can understand why people hated that movie, they expected some grandiose and epic story on the level of Lord of the rings or something, but what they got is a 95 minutes adventure family movie. It wasn't anything special either, but it was pretty solid. From start to finish the story line was well respected, it wasn't trying to pack lots of content in an impossible format, there wasn't much plots holes, at least nothing that made me say ''what the heck is going on'', it was just a entertaining adventure movie.
I can't help but feel sorry for the fans of the books, but at the same time this movie as a movie didn't deserve the hate it got.
Dave Chappelle: The Bird Revelation (2017)
2018 essential
This is deep, maybe it's too dark and people are not ready to hear about these subjects in a humorous way, but like he says in it it's important that humorists can talk about controversial subjects. It's important that people can find humour even in the darkest things. I've never seen Dave as open as he is here, he takes risks and it might not talk to your preconceived ideas on sexual equality, racial equality or whatever else you don't agree with him, maybe you'll think he's crude, but it's just an access to the mind of a comedic genius who tries to make sense of the world he lives in with all it's absurdities.
The small intimate setup is perfect for this type of monologue, the proximity with the public procure the intimacy needed to talk of those subject without making it feel disrespectful.
One of the most intelligent show I've seen.
When we look back at 2017-2018 in 20 years, this might be a good insightful moment to look back on in all the craziness.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Pretty solid
I don't watch series, well not normally. I was bored and saw the preview on netflix, I didn't thought much of it, but I decided to take a look at it. I watched the first episode, I thought it was decent, well played, nicely filed and just original enough. At about 20 minutes running it left me curious to what was going to happen next, I ended up watching the whole thing and that was quite a nice ride.
I kind of hate how it end though, I don't know how they can go on for another season and I feel like if it was to end that way it would feel rushed. Well that's kind of why I don't watch series usually so whose to blame really?
The Punisher (2017)
Average
I had high hopes for this series hoping it'd be different from most series on TV. Sadly it's just a slow paced intrigue about an ex soldier trying to find justice. Along the way we meet a lot of cliché justice officers, bad guys and military/ex-military. I'm at episode 6 and it's the most I can't take, it's badly written, I don't care for any characters and you can see everything that's going to happen before it happen from miles away. I'm a huge punisher fan, but I'd be surprised if I came back to finish to watch it.
