The Beverly Hillbillies: The Hero (1969)
THE SOUPY SALES CONNECTION.
It was about time they got comedian Soupy Sales on the show, who made two appearances, playing Mrs. Drysdale's goofball nephew, Lance Bradford. The nagging question; did all the bad apples come from her side of the family, not forgetting Louis Nye as her spoiled rotten son from another marriage.
Lance, alias "Jetstream," turns out to be a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force and happens to stop by to spread some awkward cheer? Just watching Soupy Sales mugging, no matter what he does, is a gas. Mr. Drysdale grudgingly tries to accept Jetstream, and everything goes haywire, thanks to writer Paul Henning, who kept on cranking out bizarro scripts. Another episode where the storyline had many possibilities, a surprise Soupy didn't hang on a bit longer like Louis Nye. We'll take what we can get.
Yes, check out Mrs. Drysdale's fancy wardrobe, always the clothes tycooon, thanks to Opal Vils. Opal was the wardrobe manager for the entire series run and came up with some stunning outfits. Again, why the show was even more of a hit in color.
SEASON 8 EPISODE 13 remastered color for tv. Seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray by 2027. A must for all us fans. Thanks much to METV for running every single episode.
Gilda (1946)
THE FILM THAT MADE RITA A STAR.
Should you be a fan of Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth, no doubt you'll agree this is their best film together, who co-starred in four other movies. Director Charles Vidor got an incredible performance from Hayworth, PLUS introducing her as Hollywood's newest sex symbol extraordinaiire.
In short, a film noir that's an addiction; all about gambler Johnny Farrell (Ford) crossing paths with powerful casino owner George Macready (Ballin), who takes him under his wing, introducing him to his new wife (Hayworth) -- who Farrell knows all too well. What an intriguing trio these folks make, and what fun. Macready has never played more ruthless a character, and there's even a hint of a gay relationship, fairly potent material for a 40s film.
Also considered one of Vidor's best productions, who also directed Ford and Hayworth in THE LADY IN QUESTION. No surprise legendary writer Ben Hecht had a hand in this story, though uncredited. Hecht had just finished SPELLBOUND for Hitchcock and would follow this with NOTORIOUS, again for Hitch. Talk about a bullseye. Marion Parsonnet wrote most of the screenplay, later a tv producer in the 50s.
Excellent supporting cast lead by Steven Geray (Uncle Pio), who also appeared in SPELLBOUND, Joseph Calleia as a detective and Gerald Mohr as Captain Delgado. Many other familiar faces for all us film buffs.
Unforgettable -- Rita's steamy rendition of PUT THE BLAME ON MAME? Word has it she never sang a single note, however did such a remarkable job (lip sync) it was long thought she did, even to this day.
One of the most played classic movie clips of all time.
For obvious reasons, a dvd and blu ray favorite, if not collectors item. Thanks much to MOVIES Net for running this gem multiple times.
Hold That Hypnotist (1957)
SACH AND BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE?
Even without Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall is pretty darn funny in this episode, which also boasts some fancy sets and wardrobe. The wardrobe folks went over the top here. Allied Artists obviously put a little more money into this original story, a take-off on the Bridey Murphy craze of the 50s.
Note, a woman named Virginia Tighe, under hypnosis by Dr. Morey Bernstein, claimed she lived a previous life as an Irish girl called Bridey Murphy, recalling actual historical events, which eventually brought authenticity to the bizarre story.
In this case (purely fictional!), the guys' landlady, Mrs. Kelly, claims she MAY have been Cleopatra, thanks to a hypnotist called Dr. Noble, played by Robert Foulk, a natural in this type of role. Sach and Duke believe the doc is a crook -- until Sach is hypnotized! It turns out he lived in the 17th century, working as a tax collector called Algy Winkle(?), who won a treasure map from Blackbeard the pirate.
Couple of insane thoughts here... Crooked Noble naturally wants to find the whereabouts of the map, HOWEVER, if he really had the capability of putting Sach under and revealing a past life, he would have become rich and famous anyway. In fact, everyone would be rich!
Well written fluff by Lou Morheim and Max Gerath, who went onto some notable movie and tv productions. They used the pen name Dan Pepper here. Guess Lou didn't want it known he wrote for the Bowery Boys. This was the directorial debut of Austen Jewell (who had a cool name), long time assistant director for the series. Austen claims Huntz Hall went to bat for him and got him the job, and was a super guy to work with, along with Stanley Clements. He later became production manager for classic movies like, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. Super trivia question for movie buffs.
Fun support from pretty and perky character actress Jane Nigh (as Cleo) and big guy Mel Welles (a staple in Roger Corman's films), cast as the one and only Blackbeard. This would be Queenie Smith's last appearance as Mrs. Kelly, a well known acting teacher in Hollywood for many years. Dick Elliott has a small role, who would replace Queenie as Mike Clancy, the owner of the sweetshop (formerly Louie's).
Followed by SPOOK CHASERS. Remastered by Warner Brothers on dvd, generally with 6 to 8 films per box set. Thanks to TCM for faithfully running the entire series.
The Beverly Hillbillies: Midnight Shorty (1969)
HOW TO GET THE MONEY IN THE BANK?
Mr. Drysdale's wacky episode all the way, courting silver mine tycoon(?) Shorty (Shug Fisher) in hopes of him depositing his 200 million dollar(?) fortune in his bank.
You have to admit, Mr. D knows lots of ladies in bikinis? He attempts to spoil Shorty rotten with wine, women and song, all set at Jed and Granny's backyard pool. A wild pool party to be sure, with shades of all those 60s beach party romps. Miss Jane naturally questions Drysdale's business ethics, to which he claims no one will ever suspect him -- because it's all done in HER name! Laugh out loud stuff written by producer Paul Henning, and with a slight "R" rating. You be the judge.
Best line department; (to Miss Jane), "My lawyer will get YOU out of jail!" No worries?
All is going as planned until Jethro spills the beans. It turns out Shorty hid two hundred dollars in a jar and stashed it in the mine. That's his entire fortune! As for it being BIG money, Jethro claims the hundred dollar bills are bigger than the one dollars bills. Get it?
Mr. Drysdale goes nuts for the hundredth time. Raymond Bailey and Nancy Kulp make an outstanding comedy team, and should have had a sitcom spinoff of their own.
Shug Fisher, master of the fiddle and guitar, is a hoot. He appeared 17 times on the show, also known for many tv westerns, like GUNSMOKE (in a variety of roles).
Best of SEASON 8 remastered color for tv. Seasons 6 through 9, according to Amazon, are expected to be
released on blu ray by 2027. Stay tuned. Thanks to METV for running every single season.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Big Switch (1956)
BEST LAID PLANS GO HAYWIRE!
George Mathews is a lot of fun here, like a Runyenesque character, playing a revengeful bad guy called Sam, saddled with an unfaithful gal friend called Goldie. The name alone should get you thinking... Sam wants to kill her, though he also has a suspicious cop on his back. Problems, problems.
Sam just happens to have an equally devious pal (George E. Stone, perfect for this role) who agrees to be his alibi for a few grand. Get it? You have to admit, the plan Sam cooks up is pretty clever. He pretends to be (loudly) playing poker with Stone -- and sneaks out the room to pull the job. Beware: complications.
A gotsta' see, George Mathews memorably cast in the lead. Popular actress Beverly Michaels plays Goldie and not to forget George E. Stone (also called Georgey), a staple in many classic films. Later a regular on PERRY MASON.
One of the most perfectly cast episodes, also thanks to director Don Weis. Don headed a ton of tv shows, director for IRONSIDE for years. A hero to all us cop show fans.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 5 remastered. Classic first season box set for good reason. Released 2005.
77 Sunset Strip: Hit And Run (1959)
KOOKIE AND THE TROPHY WIFE.
Dynamic episode with Kookie in BIG trouble and Stu standing squarely behind his friend and colleague.
Thanks to director Leslie H. Martinson, it all begins with Kookie borrowing Stu's T-Bird for a hot date and a wild ride. An attractive blonde in a long black Caddy takes on Kookie's T-Bird, she loses control of her car and crashes. A witness swipes the lady's purse then disappears, leaving poor Kookie to face reckless driving charges on top of a lawsuit for plastic surgery for her face? What a mess.
Pulling the strings behind the scenes is the lady's well-connected husband, wealthy Robert Murray, played to the hilt by Robert H. Harris. Murray is more concerned with his wife's beauty, dismissing the story of a witness. Harris is the whole show, who wants to see Kookie put on trial and threatening to sue Stu for a cool half million dollars if he doesn't stop asking questions? What's this guy's real story?
Next shoe to drop; the witness turns up dead.
Actress Sue Randall (from LEAVE IT TO BEAVER fame) guest stars, playing a sketch artist called Chick. Sue has some of the best lines and she and Kookie make a nice couple. Russ Bender, veteran of a ton of westerns, plays the police captain.
Not an EZ mystery for Stu to figure out, and he's back to smoking his pipe. Written by John Hawkins, who majored in westerns, like BONANZA. One of nine episodes Martinson skillfully directed for the series, later director for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and MANNIX.
Check out Kookie's vintage roadster, a well built machine, designed by actor Norman Grabowski, who produced many famous cars for Hollywood films and tv.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 13 remastered. The dvd box set, according to Amazon, was produced in Europe and may contain English subtitles. Also some episodes are boxed separately. Best to check with the seller. Thanks to METV Plus for running the entire classic series.
77 Sunset Strip: One False Step (1958)
MR. SMITH WOULD LIKE TO TALK WITH YOU!
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, a re-working of Hitchcock's STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, now conveniently set on a plane. Husband and wife team George and Gertrude Fass re-wrote this intriguing story -- 77 SS style. Stu's case all the way.
Handsome Richard Long is rather creepy, slowing cracking up, playing a gentleman called Marc Harrington (alias Mr. Smith?) who has a problem. He's saddled with a wealthy old aunt (Isabel Randolph) who he would like out of the way, propositioning fellow passenger Ed Kemmer (David). Bottom line, Mr. Smith will murder David's wife -- who wants a divorce -- provided he kill the old lady. And no one is any the wiser, right?
Wrong. David dashes over to Bailey's office and asks Stu to protect his wife, also to check the background of Harrington. Ominous stuff. At the time Long was starring in BOURBON STREET BEAT for Warners as the hero, so this was quite a shift for him. Director James V. Kern, more into sitcoms, like MY THREE SONS, handles the murder with a touch of Hitchcock. Watch this as it is striking, particularly the killing reflected in a puddle of water.
Ed Kemmer, known for SPACE PATROL and SECRET STORM, compliments Long in some sharp scenes. Connie Stevens took a break from HAWAIIAN EYE and has an interesting supporting role. As this story rolls along, you also get the feeling she may be next?
Isabel Randolph, a familiar face on tv, always seemed to turn up as someone's mother or aunt, and is thoughtfully cast here. Lynette Bernay plays the murder victim, and its a shame her role was cut short, because she's a very good actress. Lynette later gave up acting to become a successful wardrobe designer and supervisor.
The last five minutes, not to be missed, and catch Long holding onto a silver cigarette lighter, shades of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Thank you James V. Kern.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 11 remastered dvd box set. Note some of the box sets were remastered in Europe and contain captions in English. Best to check with the seller. Thanks to METV Plus for running these golden oldies Sunday nights.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: A Bullet for Baldwin (1956)
DIDN'T I KILL YOU?
Ultimate dark comedy, exceptionally written by brothers Francis and Eustace Cockrell who shared a laugh with Hitch. You can count on that.
Hitch liked John Qualen because he played the downtrodden, everyday guy to perfection. This may be one of his best tv roles. Qualen plays a used and abused office worker called Mr. Stepp, as in stepped on? Sebastian Cabot, who could play some worthy bad guys, fits the role of bossy Mr. Baldwin, who decides to fire Stepp after many years of loyal service. Goodbye and Good Luck.
At first -- and you can't blame Stepp -- he considers shooting himself. He has nothing much to live for. However, comes that brilliant bridge from
the Hitchcock playbook. Why not shoot the SOB instead? And he does. Next day comes around, Stepp expecting the worst, but is instead called back to the office to find the old buzzard ALIVE and WELL? As for the shooting, there was none?
If you're a fan of the show, it's EZ to guess what happened... Still fun to watch how this bizarre mystery unfolds and lands in Stepp's lap for a second time. The ending is a real dazzler, mixed with
some fitting dialogue.
Beautifully directed by Justus Addiss, who turns Cabot into a work of art -- who deserves everything he gets. And you just feel so sorry for John Qualen. Popular actor Phillip Reed guest stars, who also played his fair share of villains in a long career.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 14 remastered CBS dvd box set.
Collectors First Season box with a super color cover pix of deadpan Hitch.
The Beverly Hillbillies: Elly's First Date (1962)
THE BIRDS AND THE BEES AND ELLY?
First off, you have to love the incidental banjo music in the background, which became a staple in the series. Unforgettable, if not inspiring to all us music buffs.
Comedian Louis Nye, long time favorite on Steve Allen's tv show, plays the same character he introduced on that sitcom. Nye played egotistical country-clubber Gordon Hathaway, uping the ante a bit here, now playing Mr. Drysdale's spoiled rotten stepson, Sonny. Nye was so good at this goofy role he returned for several other appearances.
Note, we also get to know a bit more about Mr. And Mrs. Drysdale. Apparently, Mrs. Drysdale had another husband, more than likely a widow. Sonny was her son, but not Mr. Drysdale's. Hence why he couldn't stand the sight of him.
Producer and writer Paul Henning works his magic here, proposing a little awkward romance between Sonny and Elly? This would not be the first time, either. But you know it ain't gonna' work, right? Opposites DO NOT attract. Elly tosses Sonny over her shoulder, and watching Louis Nye's stunned expressions are priceless.
The concluding Thanksgiving dinner -- on a pool table? With cue sticks? -- is a BH classic. Henning would go on to write more outrageous dinner scenes as the show grew and grew. Only debit, it's not in color. Color made this show in spades, especially the wardrobe. Harriett MacGibbon (Mrs. Drysdale) went on to wear some really sylish clothes and hats, same with Jethro.
Holiday episode from SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 remastered CBS dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2005. Collectors item with a neat family photo cover. Seasons 1 through 5 are on dvd. According to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray by 2027.
Mission: Impossible: Fool's Gold (1969)
HOT OFF THE PRESS!
Series writer Ken Pettus could have borrowed an idea or two from the GREEN HORNET, which he also wrote for, the story is so over the top and fun. A Mission Impossible mini classic. Counterfeiting was a recurring theme on the show, with endless possibilities. Comes to mind the famous episode, a few seasons back, where the team introduced a computer that printed sheets of money. Remember? Enough to tempt any greedy villain.
Nehemiah Persoff, master of characterizations par excellence, takes it to the next level, playing an international counterfeiter called Stravos who is using special plates to print a ton of money. The goal is to exchange the funny money for a gold supply, thus creating an economic disaster for a friendly European country.
It's Paris' turn this time, called in to switch the plates, and I agree with the last reviewer, it's a slick role for him. The type of part that made Martin Landau famous. The best gimmick is the ultrasonic barrier and/or the invisible ray. Paris has to find a way to successfully navigate around it. Not EZ work. The high-tech barrier was a fixture in many other episodes, loads of fun for all us die hard fans.
Barney and Willie, in the meantime, sweat it out undercover, their mission being to destroy the phony money Stravos already printed up. A meticulous, if not down right sneaky operation, again thanks to excellent writing on the part of Ken Pettus. In some episodes, if you're allowed to look close enough, you can see the make-believe money being used which, indeed, looks something like Monopoly money? Interestingly, real money was never used, ironically, because it would reveal real serial numbers that could attract real counterfeiters. You have to admit, the whole thing was complicated.
Sally Ann Howes guest stars (Beth), who had previously appeared in CHITTY, CHITTY, BANG, BANG. Dramatic actor David Opatoshu plays the premier. Very good direction by Murray Golden, who also worked on MANNIX. The vault scenes are a work of tv art, coupled with a generous application of poetic license. Under these claustrophobic conditions, either Paris, Barney or Willie, or all three for that matter, more than likely would have been exposed BIG TIME had this been a real deal
stunt. But whose complaining? Sit back and enjoy.
Tribute to Nehemiah Persoff, who passed in 2022 at age 102. An inspiration to so many actors.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 5 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set. 7 dvds.
My Three Sons: The Homecoming (1967)
KATIE JOINS THE FAMILY.
Lois Hire wrote this great episode, and with a dose of reality. Why we loved this show. Lois also wrote for the BRADY BUNCH.
It should be titled, "The Honeymoon is Over."
Katie and Robbie return from their honeymoon and its time to make adjustments? That is the operational word here. And change doesn't come EZ. Katie is joining a house full of men -- and what to do about it. If you're a fan of the series, this theme would be played again when Steve married Barbara. Although Barbara did have Katie on her side.
An awkward time for Katie, and you really feel sorry for her. Also thanks to Lois Hire for making this story realistic, because a new marriage is not all cake and parties. Many sitcoms fall into that mold. And there will be more complications ahead. Great writing and directing throughout the series 12 year run.
This episode also shows what a terrific actress Tina Cole is, and why we all loved her. She was the best thing to happen to the series. She got her start in dramatic roles on HAWAIIAN EYE.
A good one, and Fred MacMurray never disappoints all of us. TV's best dad.
SEASON 8 EPISODE 6 remastered. According to Amazon, only seasons 1 through 5 (known as the Bub episodes with William Frawley) are on dvd. We can only hope that the rest of the series will eventually be released on dvd and blu ray, much like the Beverly Hillbillies, which recently got the green light.
The Beverly Hillbillies: Hedda Hopper's Hollywood (1964)
THE FAMOUS SILENT MOVIE EPISODE.
This had to have been inspired by reruns of silent movies back in the day. If you're old enough to remember, it was a time when cable tv did not exist? So all us good folks had no choice but to watch lots of old movies, even silent films, which were pretty darn good.
Enter Hedda Hopper, famous Hollywood columnist and actress. She is a hoot and a half. We all loved her. Hedda was nearing 80 at the time, but still very active in Hollywood, and the perfect add to this outrageous story. Mr Drysdale wants to demolish Mammoth Pictures (which he bought for Jed as an investment) and build condos. Hedda is from old school Hollywood and is against the whole idea. And the FIGHT begins...
I agree with the last reviewer, the absolute best is a low, low budget silent movie everybody puts together, called LITTLE ORPHAN ELLY? -- starring Elly May, as a Mary Pickford type character? It's a gas. The idea behind it is so Mammoth Pictures could get back into making classic movies. Producer and writers Paul Henning and Mark Tuttle have a field day with the cast. Jed dresses up as cowboy hero William S. Hart, Jethro plays Valentino?, Granny plays the proverbial little old lady, Miss Jane also gets into the act, however, catch Mr. Drysdale playing the villain of villains. The PERFECT role. Check out the wardrobe. Amazing.
There's also a goofy bit when Jed and Jethro visit legendary Grauman's Chinese Theatre to look at the cement signatures of the stars. They think the place was vandalized when they see footprints and legprints? Yes, Jed wants to cover up the "damage" with new layers of cement. The dialogue is just as insane. This scene may have been inspired by the famous I LOVE LUCY episode where Lucy steals John Wayne's footprints and cover it up with fresh cement.
Incredible episode, and with a touch of Hollywood history from the 60s. A nice time capsule, and a treat to see Miss Hedda Hopper, who obviously was having the time of her life. Look for LA announcer Bill Baldwin playing himself.
SEASON 3 EPISODE 4 remastered. CBS dvd box set released 2009. 5 dvds. Classic family photo cover.
The Beverly Hillbillies: The Thanksgiving Spirit (1968)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, FOLKS.
DO YOU remember this famous episode from back in the day?
This was a ground-breaking story because it brought together the casts of three hit tv shows, all produced by Paul Henning, also the super chief writer. Henning came up with the most amazing stories, season after season.
Granny wants to check up on Billy Jo (Linda Henning), Steve (Mike Minor) and their new born baby. PS: She's got her eye on bachelor Sam Drucker, played by Frank Cady, who we all loved. Frank was a natural in this role. It all culminates with a BIG Thanksgiving dinner in Hooterville USA. Guests of honor are Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor from GREEN ACRES, also Eb. And does he have a crush on Elly?
The side gag has Jethro pretending he's a super Hollywood producer, hoping to make sisters Meredith MacRae and Lori Saunders from PETTICOAT JUNCTION movie stars? Jethro was in a world of his own, a scene stealer on steroids. Jed and Elly May are more "reserved" here to balance things out. And Uncle Joe is hanging around too.
A bittersweet episode because it was generally put together by Paul Henning (in the first place) to bring some unity to PETTICOAT JUNCTION following the death of Bea Benadaret (Kate), a month earlier. It was a big loss, and the show unfortunately never recovered from it. June Lockhart joined the cast,
playing the new country doctor (Dr. Craig), kind of taking Kate's place, but it wasn't the same.
That all said, an episode to remember, and Jed delivers the dinner blessing in fine style. Series director Joseph Depew had his work cut out for him, behind this legendary show from beginning to end. A wonderful director, and it shows here.
PS: In the wardrobe department, check out Mrs. Drysdale's WILD zebra striped coat and matching coat for her dog? Also Elly's sleek powder blue gown. Why color made this show. Elly has a cute scene with Higgins, the famous dog.
Must see for the holidays. SEASON 7 EPISODE 10 remastered. Seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray bu 2027, this according to Amazon. The first five seasons are on dvd for all us long time fans and a new generation of fans. Thank you METV for running all 9 seasons.
The Beverly Hillbillies: Manhattan Hillbillies (1969)
PLEASE COME BACK HOME TO BEVERLY HILLS!
What a GAS. Then and now for all us big kids.
A star studded classic, and it often makes you wonder if producer and writer Paul Henning was toying with the idea of giving the Clampetts a "second" home away from home. Why not New York City?
In the past episode, slickster con Phil Silvers (Shifty) convinces Jed Central Park is for sale -- and at a good price! Jed and Granny settle down in the park, to kind of try things out, preparing to build a log cabin? And yes, Granny meets some muggers, the most outrageous bit of all. Super comedy writing and wacky dialogue combined.
Aside from Phil Silvers, Sammy Davis, Jr makes a guest appearance as Sgt. Muldoon? Was that from CAR 54? Must see TV. Look for bone-cruncher
Norman Grabowski as one of the muggers. Norman was in a ton of movies, playing gentle giants. Behind the scenes, he was in even more famous, designing many movie and tv cars, including Kookie's classic ride in 77 SUNSET STRIP. Comedian Lenny Breman plays a cabbie.
Mr. Drysdale crashes the scene and begs everybody to come back home. Mr. D is going nuts. Wait for the ending.
Best of SEASON 8 EPISODE 8 remastered color for tv. According to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray by 2027. We can't wait. Seasons 1 through 5 are always available on dvd. Thanks much to METV for running every single episode.
The Shadow Strikes (1937)
KEEP THE LIGHTS ON!
More mystery than Shadow chills, though it's still fun to see the elusive crime fighter on screen. For those of us who foundly remember the legendary radio series, dapper man about town Lamont Cranston (alias the Shadow) was caught up in some weird cases, mastered by an endless parade of extremely clever villains -- though NOT clever enough.
Walter B. Gibson, who created the Shadow, wrote the screenplay, based on a radio episode. Fabulously wealthy Caleb Delthern (and where did he come up with that name?) draws up a will, is subsequently shot and comes the arrest of a gentleman who stands to benefit the most. None other than his nephew, Winstead. But is he really the guilty party? Lamont Cranston enters the case, posing as a lawyer, who happens to be out of town?, and thus the Shadow pieces the puzzler together.
Silent screen star Rod La Rocque, who starred in a few B mysteries prior to this film, won the role of the Shadow and is quite good. Tall, dark and handsome. However, his character relies more on hiding in the dark, as opposed to his eerie, over the top entrances in the radio show... And that scary voice... I agree with the last reviewer, a lower budget and an indie film company (Grand National Pictures, later sold to Producers Releasing Corporation) could only do so much. Nevertheless, there are some fine performances. Complimenting La Rocque is another silent screen actor, Walter McGrail, playing the lead suspect. Popular heavy Cy Kendall plays Brossett and look for veteran actors Kenneth Harlan and James C Morton, a staple in Laurel & Hardy comedies. Agnes Anderson, familiar 1930s actress, co-stars as Maria Delthern. James Blakely plays Jasper, who would later become production supervisor for many top tv shows, like BATMAN. What a coincidence?
Lynn Shores directed, who a few years later would head the very atmopsheric mystery, CHARLIE CHAN AT THE WAX MUSEUM, one of the best Chan whodunits. A prime example of what a higher budget and larger studio (Fox) could accomplish.
Surprisingly, there should have been a film based on the life of author Walter B. Gibson. At the height of his career, he reportedly churned out 1 point 6 million words a year, also an author of several books on magic, yoga and hypnotism and -- yes -- was the ghost writer for Harry Houdini! He also played a part in the famous seances conducted by Mrs. Houdini, in an attempt to contact the spirit of her late husband for years. What a story to be told.
Rod La Rocque followed this with INTERNATIONAL CRIME, again playing the Shadow. By the way, Victory Jory was next to star as the Shadow in a 15 chapter serial produced by Columbia Pictures in 1940. Watch for it.
Originally on vhs. Both films are on dvd, now remastered. Thanks much to RETRO TV for running this oldie on their Friday night mystery feature.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Long Shot (1955)
THE FOLKS YOU MEET?
This was the first of 10 episodes veteran actor John Williams would appear in for his friend, Hitch. No secret he and Williams were old buds, having guested in three of his films, notably DIAL M FOR MURDER. A standout performance. If you needed a dapper British gentleman, John Williams was your choice.
He plays just that here, a chap called Walker Hendricks who is joined in a cross country trip from New York to San Francisco by out of luck gambler Charlie, slickly portrayed by Peter Lawford. These two super actors make a memorable team in more ways than one, and you know there's trouble brewing. For one thing, Walker talks too much and there's inheritence money waiting to be collected?
I agree with the last reviewer, money waiting for "someone" to claim it was the theme for many B films, particularly noir movies, however writer Harold Swanton gives it a good shot. He wrote many other classic stories for Hitch's tv show. Charlie proves to be a desperate character, that much we can tell you, however the ending is totally unexpected and you may even chuckle when all is said and done. I'm sure Hitch did.
Series director Robert Stevenson (known for MARY POPPINS) does a fine job with this two man show of shows. Another Hitch alum, Gertrude Hoffman plays Margaret, who appeared in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT and SUSPICION. Frank Gerstle plays the police sergeant, a role he mastered on tv for years.
Definitely owes up to its title, a Long Shot if ever there was. SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 remastered CBS dvd box set. Released 2005. Classic green box cover with deadpan Hitch.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Salvage (1955)
HAPPINESS AND THE GANGSTER.
It was these classic early episodes that genuinely defined this show. Hitch had a good thing going, particularly because there was nothing remotely close to this type of show on tv at the time, a series of wry little tales that kept all of us coming back for more. Still an addiction to this day.
Perhaps due to popular demand, Gene Barry returns, now playing a gangster whose brother was ratted out by a selfish woman, played by Nancy Gates (Lois). She spends her life in fear, knowing all too well that Dan (Barry) is going to get his revenge -- but just when and how?
The strange part of it all, and the real curveball to this story, finds Dan confronting Lois and "perhaps" believing she has suffered enough. Since she's young and shows promise, he has a change of heart and backs her in a business venture which becomes quite successful. You begin to ask yourself, what are the odds of this happening, and what's next?
You have to wait and see. And even if you know the ending -- which most of us fans do! -- it still packs a punch. One thing we all can agree on is Gene Barry is an outstanding actor. A role that was made for his talents. Likewise, Nancy Gates, who began her long screen career at age 15. Look for Elisha Cook, Jr, appropriate window dressing in a warped tale like this.
Series director Justis Addiss puts this one over the top. He directed nine other mini classics for the master of suspense. The opening and closing theme, called "Funeral March of a Marionette" fits so perfectly for these stories.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 6 remastered. CBS/Universal dvd box set. 3 dvds. Released 2005.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Triggers in Leash (1955)
GET READY TO FIRE!
Definitely, shades of THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY here, and yes, director Sergio Leone (who invented the speghetti western) may have been inspired by this episode. No question, a ton of future directors and writers were fans of this iconic series. Show Prep 101.
What a cast! Big and tall Gene Barry plays Del, Darren McGavin plays Red -- both who have a bone to pick with each other over a poker game. They're armed and dangerous, and the ONLY thing that comes between them is kindly Maggie, best played by Ellen Corby. This was her signature role, a down to earth lady. But could even Maggie control two hot tempered buckaroos?
A three character story, which Hitch seemed to enjoy. If you followed the series, it seemed the lesser amount of characters, the more tense the story, and this is fairly tense stuff. Exceptionally written by Richard Carr, who knew something about guns, lead writer for RICHARD DIAMOND. He later moved to soaps and wrote for PEYTON PLACE.
The acting is over the top, you can't get enough of Barry and McGavin going head to head, thanks to Don Medford, who also directed the TWILIGHT ZONE, later many classic episodes for the FBI.
Who will blink? Wait for the ending.
SEASON 1 CBS dvd box set. The original 39 episode series. Classic box set. 3 dvds Released 2005.
The Beverly Hillbillies: Wedding Plans (1969)
YOU'RE INVITED TO THE WEDDING?
IS Elly May finally going to get married?
The TV question of the year, especially if you were a long time follower of the show. Strapping Roger Torrey, who we lost too soon, plays Matthew Templeton, "possible" future husband for Elly.
Yes, Roger looked a bit like Max Baer, and originally was considered by producer Paul Henning to play Jethro. He appeared in several later episodes.
But is it all a celebration? NOT if you're Mr. Drysdale.
He fears the worst. The Clampett's millions will be leaving his bank soon after the wedding. Raymond Bailey is fondly remembered for this role, which became more outlandish (or desperate) as the series went on. Guest animal is Bruno the bear, known for GENTLE BEN, who cuddles up to Mr. Drysdale in the kitchen. Or is it the food?
Lots of fun, and Paul Henning tosses in some super dialogue. Popular character actress Elvia Allman returns as Granny's frenemy, Elverna. Frenemies defined. If you're keeping score, Granny gets most of the best lines here, really giving it back to Elverna.
Director Robert M. Leeds does another fine job with the cast, long time editor for the series. Catch Miss Jane dressed up as a forest ranger? -- or something like that -- and giving a Tarzan yell? Was that bit borrowed from Carol Burnett on her tv show? Very interesting similarity.
SEASON 8 EPISODE 5 remastered. Seasons 6 through 9 are expected, according to Amazon, to be remastered on blu ray by 2027. Worth the wait. Thanks so much to METV for running every single season.
Hold That Line (1952)
SUPER FOOTBALL STAR SACH!
A prelude to later episodes in which Sach became a super on steroids hero, thanks to downing a secret formula. Only in BOWERY BOYS land.
Series writer Tim Ryan put together a classic script, taking the guys out of the city and to a distinguished university. He may have borrowed parts from a famous Three Stooges film where two wealthy gents (on a bet) attempted to launch them into high society? Sure enough, professor Stanhope (Pierre Watkin) firmly believes anyone can join an Ivy League college while trustee Billingsley (Francis Piierlot, always fun to watch) disagrees, claiming only students of a certain caliber can make the grade. And let the games BEGIN.
Loaded with unforgettable dialogue and Leo Gorcey's famous malaprops -- just what a university needs. The big thing here, quite naturally, is prep for a historical football game, and that's where Sach comes in. He downs the secret formula and becomes an invincible player, ranking with the legends of football. Enter the bad guys... You know that was coming. With lots of money floating on the game, the crooked gamblers lure Sach away thanks to pretty Candy Callin, played to the top by Veda Ann Borg. Veda was a staple in many classic B films. Also featuring two other lovely actresses, Mona Knox and Gloria Winters, who shortly moved to tv and SKY KING.
For movie buff, there's a solid roster of familiar faces, including Byron Foulger, playing Professor Grog(?), Taylor Holmes (as the dean), John Broomfield (Biff), Paul Bryar (Coach Rowland) and old timer Tom Kennedy as Murphy. This was also the first appearance of Gil Stratton, Jr., playing new member Junior, who would be cast in the next episode as well. Gil went onto become a famous sportscaster in Los Angeles.
By the way, catch Louie surrounded by all the girls!
Must see. In later years, Leo Gorcey said his dad was always demanding bigger parts, and his wish was granted here.
A must see for college life in the 50s, turning it all upside down in outrageous fashion, and once again, Huntz Hall steals the show. Thanks to director William Beaudine for his crafstmanship. Perhaps one of the more classier episodes at that. The sets and settings, both indoor and outdoor are terrific.
Always on dvd, thanks to Warner Brothers remastered box sets, usually containing 6 to 8 episodes per box. Applause to TCM for faithfully running the entire series.
77 Sunset Strip: Vicious Circle (1958)
JEFF, STU AND THE OLD MOB.
Another cool adventure written by Fred Brady and directed by Leslie H. Martinson who, without fail, kept the bullets flying high and low. Not by any means an understatement.
A 77SS winner. Harold J. Stone plays what he's best at; a tough old crime boss (named Catto), now retired and living in Beverly Hills. Enter Kookie, who happens to be at the right place at the right time (depending on how you look at it), and witnesses the kidnapping of Catto's son. Now WHAT?
The most imaginative part of this story finds Catto and his right-hand man Pete ( played by George Tobias) being deputized by Lt. Gilmore (Byron Keith), grabbing guns, along with Stu and Jeff, and mowing down the kidnappers in their remote hideout. This is heavy stuff, exceptionally directed by Leslie H. Martinson. He also adds a bit of dark comedy when Kookie joins the action with smoke bombs, taking a few seconds off(?) to comb his hair! K-BOOM.
You have to love this. Don't know if Fred Brady added that to the script, or it was Martinson, but a classic defining scene for both Kookie and the series.
An early role for Bert Convoy, playing Blake and look for veteran actor Rory Mallinson (DARK PASSAGE) as one of the sergeants at the scene of the shooting. This was Byron Keith's first appearance as Gilmore, who later played Mayor Linseed on BATMAN. Great to see George Tobias in a fun and witty sidekick role.
PS: The ransom is for $150,000, which would be about 1.6 MIL. Today. And yes, I agree, lots of smoking in this episode. How many cigarettes does Jeff go through? I noticed the increase in the previous episode, and chalked it up to a cigarette sponsor. It makes sense, unless they're trying to immitate Bogey.
Everything clicks. SEASON 1 EPISODE 10 remastered WB dvd box set. According to Amazon, some of the sets were produced in Europe and have English subtitles. Best to check with the seller.
77 Sunset Strip: Iron Curtain Caper (1958)
STU AND THE COMMUNISTS.
Pre-MISSION IMPOSSIBLE material, and with Stu -- at his coolest, trying to fake out both East German and Russian operatives.
An interesting espionage tale, and away from Hollywood for a change of pace. Stu's previous work with the OSS during WWII comes in handy as his mission takes him to Berlin, out to rescue international reporter Larry Hilton (Richard Garland) who has a list of names of American Communists. Hilton has been marked for death and the clock is ticking away. Lots of goons with guns.
Imaginative writing by Fenton Earnshaw, known for STATE TROOPER, many other dramatic shows. I agree with the last reviewer, Jacqueline Scott has an excellent role, keeping Stu on his toes. An adventure worth watching, even though it was all shot on the Warner backlot.
Laurence Dobkin (as Sergei) is super in this type of setting, best playing villains. Dobkin also worked as a director. Kurt Kreuger (John) guest stars and look for veteran Otto Waldis as the prefect of police. Many other familiar faces.
Another slick episode directed by Richard L. Bare, especially the unexpected shoot-out finale. What made the show a winner.
SEASON 8 EPISODE 9 remastered. The WB dvd box sets, according to Amazon, were produced in Europe, and some with English captions. Best to check with the seller. Box sets contain selected episodes or entire seasons. Thanks much to METV Plus for running the entire series Sunday nights. Must see TV.
77 Sunset Strip: The Well-Selected Frame (1958)
JEFF IS SET UP BIG TIME.
What a case, beautifully written by Charles Hoffman, master of mystery and adventure. It's all here, wrapped around Jeff, the textbook definition of a fall guy. More over, Hoffman cleverly works in a slice of PERRY MASON as an added attraction.
Peggie Castle, in an excellent performance, plays a wealthy woman called Valerie Stacey who hires Jeff for protection, fearing her husband, Howard (Bartlett Robinson) is going to kill her. Two problems; alimony and his secretary (played by Frances Fong), who he has taken a liking to.
Now for the big surprise. Jeff is played for a fool; he's clobbered by Valerie and wakes up beside Howard's dead body -- now wanted for murder. For a brief time he's a fugitive on the run, until he meets up with Valerie again, only this time she now offers him some money... although he may have to count it in prison!
The whole strange case ends up in a courtroom, a la Perry Mason, and watch how it all plays out. A mystery you have to see to the end. Castle is a standout, seconded by Frances Fong. I agree with the last reviewer, it was a terrific decision to feature an Asian actress on the show, and in a larger role. Fong's scenes with Roger Smith are memorable.
The only episode directed by Boris Sagal, and it's a shame. Sagal was long associated with PETER GUNN and the TWILIGHT ZONE. His touch for atmosphere is evident here. Look for Hal Smith (ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW) in a bit role who gives bruised and beaten Jeff a ride.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 8 remastered. Note the Warner Brothers dvd box sets were produced outside the US. Some also feature selected episodes, others entire seasons. Best to check with the seller. Thanks to METV Plus for running these super oldies Sunday nights.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Premonition (1955)
SAYING HELLO TO THE FAMILY?
The type of story (defined) that could have been suitable for the TWILIGHT ZONE. And many more to come. The cross-over between both shows was remarkable, but Hitch gets the go-ahead for this one.
All American good guy John Forsythe plays a gentleman who heads back home from Europe. It's been several years and it soon becomes a strange reunion. Turns out his father died some years back -- and nobody told him? As expected, Kim (Forsythe) begins to suspect the old family is hiding something, perhaps a murder.
A really moody tale, credit Harold Swanton, who wrote many stories for Hitch. Swanton also wrote for WAGON TRAIN. The cast is a perfect fit. John Forsythe plays his role quite well, but of course if you're a true Hitch fan, you DON'T know what to think. That's the whole selling point of this show.
Cloris Leachman, who we lost in 2021, has an early co-starring role (Susan), also Warren Stevens (Perry), playing his brother. I agree with the last reviewer, they are a cagey twosome.
No mystery would be complete without an appearance of George Macready (as Douglas), always a treat and to guess what part he really plays. Macready was one of the best film villains, good friends with Vincent Price.
Robert Stevens directs this with his usual flair, behind a record 44 episodes. He had the experience, main director for SUSPENSE, now being rerun on RETRO TV.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 2 remastered CBS dvd box set.
Classic 39 episode First Season. 3 dvds. Released 2005. The purple cover is a hoot.
Mission: Impossible: The Controllers: Part 2 (1969)
THE B230 CRISIS. PART II
Tense (what else?) continuation of Part I, and with a few tricks thrown in for good measure, thanks to writer Laurence Heath. Heath wrote a record number of scripts for the series, later for DYNASTY. Stay tuned for some high adventure.
As I had mentioned in Part I, Heath may have borrowed the "zombie" idea from BATMAN. David Sheiner plays notorious Dr. Turek who has perfected a chemical called B230, which when dropped in water supplies around the world will turn people into zombies. Sound familiar? Mind control 101. The trick is for the M. I. team to turn another foe, Colonel Borodin (nicely played by Alfred Ryder) against Turek. Turning villains against each other was a staple in the series, however it all goes haywire, thanks to Heath.
Borodin is killed and that now gives Turek even more freedom to continue with his wild plan. This sequel episode has some challenges, especially for our hero Jim Phelps. As always, terrific acting, especially David Sheiner, who makes a tame villain. I agree with the last reviewer, nevertheless there's one or two head scratching moments. Carrying a dead body around and NEVER being seen by passers-by is a feat in itself. Chalk this all up to Poetic License, long a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE stamp.
Lovely Dina Merrill returns as Meredyth, well cast in a dramtic role, as is Brooke Bundy, playing Katherine. Brooke, who literally grew up on tv in a wide assortment of roles, turned up in many cop shows.
Another super job of directing by Paul Krasny, also working on Mannix with similar results.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 4 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set. The cover artwork is excellent, super sketch of Peter Graves.
