You Won't Be Alone (2022)
Tedious, uneventful, just kinda confusing
Very hard movie to stick with.. Most of the speaking (which is sparse) is via narration, & almost all of it is head scratching & vague. So much of it is shot in extreme (shaky) close up that it feels somewhat manic, while also simultaneously feeling like the slowest movie ever.. the "mama" witch's makeup (& acting - imo) scratched out any believability/creep factor from the first scene.. the entire movie (once it starts moving, if you can call it that..) follows a young feral girl that (as an infant) was promised to a witch once she turns 16.. soo, instead of enjoy the 16 years she has with her (which was the deal), the mother sticks her in a cave basically to rot & live like a caveman?.. well witch gets in, takes girl out into the world & makes her a witch/shape-shifter as well. Literally the rest of the movie is her killing & experiencing life thru other beings (a few girls, a man, a dog).. mind you she's a cave witch so she can't speak so.. that's about that.. my stream dropped out with less than 10 mins left & I genuinely couldn't bring myself to go back & finish. I wanted to like it but wow.. PAINFULLY slow (I live for slow burns), & up its own ass.. Definitely wouldn't categorize this as horror.. horror elements, absolutely.. music, atmosphere, subject matter, overall mood- completely not what you're expecting (I wasn't anyway).. slow, gentle, ethereal, & yet.... just not that interesting, not really great to look at, not sure WHAT the message or motivation is at all.. there were way too many times "The Witch" came to mind as a very obvious reference point.
Scream (2022)
"I'm not a regular horror movie, I'm a smart horror movie!"
Sure, Jan..
Copy + paste of the previous films (expected) but wow.. almost nobody to root for, BAD acting all across the board (minus Courteney Cox & Neve Campbell of course, if only they had more than 7 minutes to actually do anything), especially the "new Sidney", plot holes galore, plenty of violence but almost no body count.. really it's just altogether sloppy & uninspired.. confusing/vague motives.. bringing back "legacy" characters just to have them be the weakest & do basically nothing but show up.. definitely the weakest of the series.
The Night House (2020)
"There is nothing"..
.. New or exciting to see here. Rebecca Hall is great as always, & I live for slow burns.. but this was just blatantly lazy. Bad writing (dialogue especially), 1 semi-cool effect that they used 5 times too many, literally nothing is elaborated on.. just.. boring. Literally took 4 sittings to get through it.
*SPOILER*
Long story short: Rebecca Hall died at some point in her life, this "entity" saw her & spent years trying to possess her husband to kill her. He tries to create mazes to fool it & ends up killing a bunch of women in her place to appease it, eventually killing himself. It's essentially a really lousy "What Lies Beneath" refresher.
Skip.
Them (2021)
Don't believe the 1's or 10's
Definitely worth a watch if you enjoy stylistic, multi level thrillers. Starts off great, slowly finds itself stumbling into familiar territory & eventually becomes too overwhelming. A lot of content, & it gets a bit sloppy. Great acting & cinematography throughout, but nothing extremely redeeming or fresh. Still creepy, exciting & fun but definitely not as good by the end as it hinted at the beginning.
