Make Room for Daddy: Pupa Loves Rusty (1964)
Pupa!
Cute episode with Pupa from Italy thinking that Rusty has purposed marriage. Problem is, Pupa is only twelve and Rusty is sixteen. Danny Thomas discovered Pupa and had her brought over from Italy. Pupa was very talented, she could sing, dance and act. She was a ball of energy and was given the big build up; appearing with Dean Martin, Red Skeleton and Dick Clark. She appeared on television and even in the movies. She learned English and sang on American Bandstand and the Ed Sullivan Show. However, in 1971 at only the age of twenty, she decided to get married, have children and retire from the world of entertainment. Like a falling star, Pupa shined bright and then faded away....
The Love Boat: Hidden Treasure/Picture from the Past/Ace's Salary (1985)
Andy Warhol Couldn't Act, But Who Cares
This was a weird and very entertaining episode with the legendary artist Andy Warhol making a strange appearance. Warhol just could not act. He was stiff like wood and had no facial expression and spoke in monatomic voice. His wig was even more bizarre. With all this said, I still found his appearance interesting and entertaining. The rest of the cast basically fell into the background. Uncle Milty also appeared and he seemed like he was in a coma like state of being. Maybe he was on meds because his performance was also void of any life or emotions. Teri Hatcher as one of the Love Boat dancers was young, fit, talented and gorgeous. You can easily see that she was a future star in the making. Bottom line, bizarre and entertaining.
Heaven with a Gun (1969)
Starts well then gets demented
This film started off well enough, despite a hanging. There was a lot of catchy dialogue and also lots of humor. The general store scene where Glen Ford wants to buy Barbara Hershey a dress is very funny, but Caroline Jones totally steals the scene. If the film continued at this pace, it would have been very entertaining and enjoyable. However, for some totally unexplainable reason, the film goes completely off the deep end and becomes a sadistic, brutal, perverted and violent disaster. Without giving anything away, there is a disgusting scalping, an even more disturbing castration, and a nauseating brutal rape. Is that entertaining? Not for me. Positive points, some decent acting, especially by Miss Jones. Barbara Hershey is gorgeous and Mr Ford is always likeable.
Good Times (1974)
Alot Angry on Screen and Off
I liked Good Times. It was ground breaking for its time. It wasn't great, but it was entertaining and in many cases, it left you contemplating the episode. However, I noted an undercurrent of anger and maybe even hatred. The two main stars John Amos and Esther Rolle it seems, became very embittered and angry as the show started becoming a hit. Their resentment seemed geared at their on screen son Kid Dynamite. Mister Walker, like Henry Winkler and John Travolta went from minor billing to super stardom leaving their fellow cast members jealous and envious. Mr Amos and Ms Rolle were very angry people. I am always perplexed with successful actors who are always angry: they have big salaries (but always feel underplayed), fame, adulation and a beautiful life, yet they are miserable and embittered. I don't feel sorry for them. Anyhow, I got off track. Good entertainment despite the underbelly of hate.
The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Sick Boy and the Sitter (1961)
Not Funny At All, But corny
What can I say. The whole series had canned laughter and laugh tracks which were very annoying as they laughed at every corny bit. Always lots of yelling, loud talking and hysterical interacting, but to me, this is not funny. As a matter of fact, there is really very little to laugh about. Corny bits are entertaining enough, but the reality of the whole thing, it was just a lot of slapstick, pit falls and non stop arguing and non of it was funny. I do like the series, but if you've seen one episode you have basically seen them all. Of course this was made in the late 1950s and early 1960s, so the public's mindset was completely different then today.
Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)
Don't take it seriously and it's entertaining
What's there not to like here: John Boy Walton in space. Colonel Hannibal from A-Team and Napoleon Solo from the Man From Uncle. Throw in some sexy women, some weird creatures and aliens and some really cheesy sets and you have a fun old time..George P steals the film as Cowboy and seems hungover or lite most of the film. Robert Vaughn looks bored to death and also hung over. He sleepwalks his part. Richard Thomas is always likeable. Miss Danning is sexy and overplays her part, but is laughing her way through the whole film. Lots of corny and campy laughs, and some juvenile action scenes, but who cares. The whole thing is made for laughs.
The Left Handed Gun (1958)
First Gay Western?
Paul Newman as Billy The Kid. He has more phobias then Carter has liver pills. Seems Billy is loved and stalked by a number of men throughout the film. Hurt Hatfield plays a bizarre obsessed writer who clears is enamored with Mr Billy The Kid. Newman has two best friends who act like five year olds. They are as immature as can be and are always all over each other. The whole thing has a homosexual undercurrent. Not really sure what the point of the whole thing was. Newman was not much of an actor at this point and overplays his part. He spends the whole movie making a zillion goofy expressions and movements. Maybe I am way off base, but according to this film, Billy The Kid was a closeted gay queen.
Our Miss Brooks (1952)
Cute and Cornball
I've been watching reruns at 4am five days aweek. Filmed in "glorious" black and white which definitely captures the 1950s from which it came from. Most episodes are cute and sweet as apple pie. Captures a time of innocence in the United States which sadly is lost forever. Outstanding performances by the whole cast, especially Miss Arden. She is the "straight woman" for the antics of Gale Gordon and Richard Crenna. Most episodes are really cornball, but it's all good and wholesome entertainment. Crenna as the goofy and likeable student with this high-pitched voice steals many episodes, but that voice can give you a headache and the laughter aspect can get lost. Over all good fun.
Father Knows Best: Bud Lives It Up (1960)
Love can be expensive
Cute episode where Bud is smitten by a gorgeous girl and goes on a wild spending spree to impress her. Typical cornball concept on the "right" thing to do at least according to the writers of the series. The beautiful Cynthia Baxter later known as Cynthia O'Neal is enough to make most men go off the rails. So, when Bud takes her out for a night on the town, it is easy to see why money would be no object. The ridiculous part is that Bud's college pals act like they are senior citizens when they find out what he has done by using the college's credit card. If you don't take the whole thing too seriously, it an entertaining half hour.
Hitler's Madman (1943)
Sadly nothing has changed
This tragic, sad and depressing film made in 1943 depicted the atrocities of the Nazi regime and their supporters in Prague during World War II. Unfortunately, and very sadly, this brutal, sadistic and horrible behavior continues in the world we live in today. Face it, man has made little progress in the area of peace and love since the beginning of time. Sure, we have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to technology, medication, etc., but we are still murdering each other day in and day out and in most instances for things as meaningless as cutting someone off in traffic. Is their hope for us as a people. Can mankind live in Peace; sadly, I doubt it.
In a Lonely Place (1950)
Bogart plays S.O.B. Psychopath
Who could have any type of sympathy or connection to Bogart in this film. He is a complete nut. A ranting, raving, violent, psycho. The part he played was a complete turn off. A guy like this in real life would be in and out of jail and most likely would either kill someone or get killed himself. Of course in the movie women found him irresistible until of course he becomes a brutal, obsessed, lunatic. The whole movie just seems unbelievable. I can't believe any normal people would tolerate being around this type of screwball. With all this said, Bogart gives a solid performance, yet he does get carried away and over plays some scenes.
Civil War (2024)
Clearly Suppose to be Trump and a Prediction of things to come
Nothing earth shattering here. Basically a road trip through the apocalypse. A President in his third term who closed the FBI who the writer clearly bases on ex President Trump. The liberal and left wingers with their delusional believes that a Trump Presidency would result in a dictatorship and anarchy as shown in this film. Anyhow, there are underlying liberal political concepts here in nothing more than a violent, senseless shootout. The main characters are wooden, void of any real emotions and stare into space most of the time. Taking non stop meaningless photos for what reason. Are there still newspapers or magazines being published in a country in the mist of total unrest. Seems with a rare exception, every "American" in this film is a psycho sadistic murderer. Dismal expose on the US. Overhyped and nothing special.
The Great Jesse James Raid (1953)
Tom and Barbara
Yep, Mr Neal and Miss Payton attempted to cash in on their infamous publicity regarding Neal putting Mr Tone in a coma over the affections of Miss Payton. Neal was a standout college boxer at Northwestern, so the brawl was not only unfair, but brutal and one sided. Neal went on to be convicted in the mysterious death of a future wife and after a few years in prison was released and promptly died of a heart attack. Miss Payton hit the skids and became an overweight alcoholic who died at 39. This movie is a dismal failure and is cheaply done with mediocre acting at best. This film is more of a curious sidebar to the tragic lives of the two stars. Better to forget the whole thing.
Blink Twice (2024)
Politically Correct Movie
Yep, had to happen. A politically correct horror/suspense film where the Caucasian bad boy gets his comeuppance. The billionaire clearly is a Jeffrey Epstein clone and the Me Too Movement is just as clearly shown. A few nice twists, a surprise ending, and the on screen revenge for all the liberals out there watching this fantasy. The stereotyping is very obvious and the acting is somewhat farcical. The movie starts out interesting enough. The scenery is fabulous and it seemed that this could be a real fascinating mystery/drama. But, alas, the movie goes for the cheap trills and the violence associated with revenge. Seen a lot better and a lot worse.
Buck and the Preacher (1972)
Sidney and Harry wasted in this mediocre film
Honestly, can't figure out why two outstanding actors, especially Sidney P made this third rate spaghetti western dismal ripoff. The acting was so wooden and lacked any type of life. Sidney and Harry had no on screen chemistry at all. The interaction between the two seemed forced at best. Harry was so over the top in his performance that he came across as cartoonish. There were stereotypes all over the place. The supporting cast was horrible. They either way overplayed or underplayed their parts. Honestly, there was nothing redeeming about this whole thing. What was the point, to see the two main stars gunning down people left and right. Gave this film a five only because I like Harry and Sidney. Pure garbage.
Valdez Is Coming (1971)
Ridiculous and Nothing New
I like Burt Lancaster. I like Richard Jordan and Susan Clark. However, this film is beyond ridiculous and really stupid and totally unbelievable. Same old rehash of a one man army reeking havoc on a large group of psychopaths. What is really amazing is that these type of films are still popular today. Why Burt Lancaster has to be a Mexican American is beyond me. His accent sounds fake and after awhile it gave me a headache. He never misses a shot and of course all his shots are lethal. The bad guys are just stereotypes and almost all overplay their parts. Susan Clark is totally wasted here and looks like a plain Jane and isn't very attractive here. Richard Jordon steals the show, but there isn't much to steal.
Cuckoo (2024)
Cuckoo is right
Started off interesting enough, but then went off on a ridiculous road. First off, without giving anything away, this movie uses themes from the 1960s Brodrick Crawford horror film, The Vulture and a Donald Sutherland flick where he chases a mysterious person in a hooded raincoat. The acting is decent and the main actresses perform as well as can be expected in this type of film. Definitely some weird and creepy scenes, and some slight fright. However, reality and logic just go completely out the window and the story plot is all over the place. Of course you can't analyze this kind of film. I rate it as a little below average. If you watch it twice or more in a week, you will go cuckoo.
Walk on the Wild Side (1962)
Gutter Trash Film
I wanted to like this film because it had a great cast of actors, but unfortunately, they were all wasted in this disgusting filth. The dialogue was mediocre at best and almost everyone overplayed their roles. A young Jane Fonda stood out with her gorgeous looks. However, at this point of her career, her acting was minimal at best. Also, she was way too good looking to be a transient street walker. Lesbianism seems to be the underline theme of the film and in those days, almost all gay characters end up dead, as does the femme fatal here. The whole film has no redeeming value. Everyone is unlikable and comes across as filth. The movie left a bad taste in my mouth. Sweep this gutter trash down the sewer where it belongs.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Gay or Not Gay
Is it only me, but are there not a ton of gay over and under tones throughout this film. Sal's Plato is very feminine. He has a pin up of Alan Ladd in his locker and seems fascinated, almost obsessed with James Dean throughout the whole movie. Then there is Buzz. Very bizarre interactions between him and Dean. Anyhow, who cares, right? Ground breaking for its time and in a way it predicted the world to come. Why was everyone so angry. Heck why are the vast majority of today's world not only angry, but extremely violent over almost anything..Always found this perplexing, because I for one...I am not angry. Enjoyable film. Decent acting despite some of the cornball dialogue.
Father Knows Best: Crisis Over a Kiss (1959)
Times Have Changed!
I guess in the 1950s this episode was shocking and maybe ground breaking. When girls had a be virgins and getting a kiss was really a mega big deal, this episode was of interest to the viewers. Today, it is either laughable or sad. Laughable that a kiss was a Federal Case back in the 1950s, sad because society has lost the innocence it once had and tried hard to preserve. Ron Ely who later went on to Tarzan fame (tv version) did a credible job as Mister Perfect in an early acting role. Maybe he was too handsome in a time when his type of handsome was starting to go out the window. Still, he did a good job. Billy Grey stole the episode with a solid performance. Time sure has changed; for the better or worst, who knows? You decide.
Picnic (1955)
Hollywood Pipe Dream
Somewhat outdated today, but still entertaining. Hollywood always presents Love As First Sight films where people fall madly, hopelessly and uncontrollably in love. William Holden was aging well at this point. He was only 37, but had bags under his eyes and looked like a man in his 40s. He was in great shape, but to me he didn't have that something that would make every woman in town go crazy for him. Kim Novak at 22 was gorgeous, but so underplays her role, that she comes across dull and even boring. To me, there was little chemistry between her and Holden. The movie was stolen by outstanding performances by Arthur O'Connell and Roz Russell. Entertaining film if you overlook a lot, but definitely worth watching.
The Joe Rogan Experience (2009)
Tough Guy. Why?
Here a man in his mid 50s and for some reason wants to be a tough guy. He totally changed his whole look: shaved head, tattoos, muscles, and strutting like a rooster. I don't get it. So, he's a tough guy, who cares? Don't get me wrong, I like him and find him entertaining. Is he a legendary figure; everyone today's thinks they have a legacy. Hello. In 50 years or much less, he like thousands of others will be forgotten. With an extremely rare exception, people are forgotten with time. With that said, he is laughing all the way to the bank. Lots of very angry people out there. They should live in Ethiopia, Sudan, The Congo, Central African Republic for a few months (they'd most likely last less then a week). Spoiled rotten, angry people. Living in a bubble. Joe is their hero. It's all good, because in the scope of things, who cares.
Coma (1978)
Beyond Stupid
This has to be one of the stupidest and ridiculous films ever made. First off, coma patients are just basically forgotten by everyone. Where are their families and relatives? No lawsuits, no investigations, nothing. Only the main character sees what no one else sees; stupid! Nothing new here. Rehash of dozens of films where no one believes the main character. The acting is stereotyped and in most cases way over the top. I like Richard Widmark, but his portrayal here is so exaggerated that he seems cartoonish. Everyone involved in what seems to be a coverup is so ridiculously that again, the movie loses complete credibility. Coma was a big hit. But, that doesn't mean it was a good film.
Lawman (1971)
Bleak, Raw and Depressing
I liked this film, but it is a real downer. Sad, bleak and depressing. Not entertaining in the sense of enjoyment, more of a symbolic theme oriented movie. Sadly and sometimes tragically there are people who live and die so to speak by the letter of the law, or by the letter of the rules. Not one ounce of flexibility, understanding or compassion. It's all cut and dry. Miserable to be around these people to say the least. A lot of brutal violence which sometimes to me, seemed unnecessary. But, maybe that was the idea of the film, regardless of the outcome, the law and rules must be followed absolutely. Not for all tastes. Downbeat ending. Not even sure, despite some good acting, if it is even worth a look.
Deadfall (1968)
A Real.Stinket
Typical of some off beat and weird films of the 1960s. All I can think of is that the director was trying to shock the audience, but there is shock and then there is shocking. Instead sticking to a somewhat complex heist film, the story plot goes all over the place from homosexual relationships, World War II betrayal, blackmail, adultery, mental illness, perversion, incest and murder. The funny thing, which is funny in a sarcastic way, is that none of these twists and turns makes the film even remotely interesting. Not sure why a big star like Michael Caine was at the time would star in this garbage, but like I said, it was the 60s man.
