The Silent Sea (2021)
Authentic characters
Bae Doona is great once again. My only complaint is that the show moves a little bit slow. Great elements of Korean horror and casual sci-fi. If you're looking for detailed sci-fi - this isn't the show for you. I thought it was fun but can definitely understand the poor reviews.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Half Baked Story
Maybe I just didn't get it, although I'm fairly certain I did. It's clear they had expanded ideas that had the potential to fit in another matrix movie. The execution of it all just was disappointing. It felt like Sense8 and Matrix mixed together very poorly. It was an action movie with a sliver of philosophy. It was loaded with flashbacks instead of foreshadowing. All that being said, I'm glad they are revisiting the franchise and hope this leads to something grand in the future because this definitely was not it.
VHYes (2019)
Rollercoaster of nostalgia
If I had a complaint about this movie it would be that it had too much packed into such a short film. I am very greedy with a 10 star rating, but this movie really cooked my noodle a bit. I felt something inside me while watching this; I don't know if it was the hi resolution retro quality, the familiarity in the programming, or the bursts of hitting all the channels at the right time. If you have given this movie a low star, please rewatch it and think of another movie that comes close to the genre this director has created. The closest I can think is paranormal activity. To put it concisely, an unusually warm candid experience.
No Sudden Move (2021)
I get why people didn't like it...
But I loved it. Only complaint was maybe some of David Harbour's acting but he really stepped up to the plate with the character. Cinematography was interesting with all the wide angle shots - it felt really off at first but made sense all the story progressed. Cheadle played an incredible lead character leaning into the role more and more every scene. Del Toro was great as always. Oceans was family friendly, Logans was edgy, and this was just plain gritty. This is a movie you watch twice to see how far off the deep end the story is willing to go. The scenery and dialogue also make it a great period piece!
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
I can see why people don't like it
But honestly, are you really not going to watch it after seeing the other 5? I think a lot of people were turned off by how much the action sequences evolved in this installment. I wasn't a big fan, but I don't think it was poorly executed at the same time. The burning tower was an amazing visual.
The thing I missed in this movie compared to the others was an attachment to the characters. I didn't really care for anybody except the antagonist. All of the other movies had a way of making you care for the side characters in a surprisingly short amount of time.
The continuity felt a bit broken from the end of 5 to the beginning of 6. This bothered me until the plot revealed itself towards the end. You can tell the writer poured his heart into this project to finish up the story properly. I still find it amazing that this whole franchise started with a standard sci-fi horror and evolved into this. Worth the watch but probably won't be your favorite installment.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Epic struggles for humanity and sanity
The journey of each main character in this show and the reactions of their trusted partners (perhaps enablers for certain characters) throughout the show was nothing short of genius. The writers tightened and loosened tension throughout the season perfectly sending the audience on a rollercoaster of thrills.
Like other reviews have said, the real treasure in this show is the acting. Mary's character is fantastic start to end. John's character is what really sold the show for me. His eerie tone, vernacular, attitude, and passion kept me on the edge of my seat in every scene he appeared. Hamish Linklater deserves an Emmy for his performance.
True Detective/The Sinner/Bloodline/Big Little Lies vibes were very heavy throughout the show. This will be one that I watch again and again!
