Red Eye (2005)
First time in 60 odd years I hid behind a cushion
Slowish start, blossoming romance and then it revved up to a stunning thriller, by the end my heart was beating so fast and hard I thought it was going to escape my ribcage and I was drenched in nervous sweat. The leading two actors were sheer perfection and I felt every blow thrown between the two. I cannot understand how people are giving this film such middling ratings. Sound effects were brilliant, the subwoofer and surround speakers were certainly given a workout. I had no prior knowledge about this film, so it wasn't a film that I had an inkling about the storyline or who was in it, which made it even more exciting to experience.
Motorhoming with Merton & Webster (2021)
Interesting and informative
I cannot fathom out why people are giving this show such low ratings. It is a pleasant, informative show and quite inspiring. It does what it is supposed to do with gentle humour. I would prefer more hints and how to motorhome but I don't think many people would appreciate a hour and a half plus programme. I don't watch it for the comedy element, though both Suki and Paul are funny, it's just an hour isn't long enough and I would rather have facts than humorous little acts. Would I love more series's? Yes of course I would. I just want to own a motorhome and go around the UK and the rest of the world!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Would be perfect without humans ie American military.
Would be perfect without humans ie American military. At times the dialogue was simply awful, almost expected John Wayne to make an appearance. I appreciate that the Americans are seemingly keen on calling their fathers Sir but it just seemed so out of place.
Visually, sheer perfection, story compelling at times but unfortunately not enough to maintain interest in the film, shame really as I was so looking forward to it. "Dumbass, perv, thanks guys, insane" just don't seem to be Na'vi words even if their father is human. For sheer beauty, design and technical skills, 10/10, story 4/10 as basically a rehash of 1st film. Script/dialogue 1/10.
Lightyear (2022)
First and foremost not Toy Story
I have now watched it twice and I will buy it on disc when available. It is not Toy Story, I repeat it is not Toy Story. What it is, is a good story, great visuals, amazing sound. Judging by some reviews you would have thought it was a raging LGBTQ movie........big clue it isn't, it is a very sweet story of love & affection which probably accounts for 30 seconds over the whole film running time.
Nightbooks (2021)
Definitely not PG
First of all ignore the bad reviews, it is a brilliant movie, more suited for younger teens.plenty of magical, scary moments with an underlying theme of suspense. Story, acting and effects were very good but definitely not a PG rating more like 12+
Pinocchio (2019)
A stunningly beautiful film
Truly spellbinding film, often dark in places but almost perfect in every minute of the film. A zillion miles away from Disney and all the better for it. Subtitled but still extremely enjoyable and the Italian language is simply gorgeous to listen to. Only fault is the film came to an end 😢
The Witches (2020)
Dahl hated the first one!!
I really can't understand people. Yes the first film was enjoyable, yes Angelica Houston was superb but this film betters the first one. OK the CGI wasn't the the best at times eg the cat but I would definitely buy it on disc to keep.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Hard hitting yet tender & humorous.
Been waiting for ages to watch this film. I do not understand how anyone can give this film a low rating unless they a) need to be spoon fed the story, characterisation and when to think for themselves. b) they enjoy the feeling of being controversial c) they lack any empathy to the characters & story d) they are just too thick!!
This film made me fearful, uneasy yet also renewed my faith in human nature. It was the type of film where you were laughing one minute and nearly crying the next. Films like this remind us just how fragile peace is and how easy it is to let mad leaders sweep a country down a path that ruins lives.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Worth watching if there's nothing else is on
Disappointing sequel. Predictable and a lacklustre performance from Linda Hamilton. Arnie was, well Arnie, looking good and staying in character with some funny lines. Natalia Reyes was good & Mackenzie Davis was impressive and perhaps both were held back a bit by the script. To be honest, it's one film that shouldn't have been made, it didn't add anything to the franchise.
The Aeronauts (2019)
A film worthy of watching
OK, a film BASED on true events, inspired by the brave men and women who led the way. Definitely not historically accurate but a ripping yarn, with solid acting by all. Beautifully filmed and CGI constructed. If you want research the story behind the film then do so because the film fires the passion behind ballooning but remember it is primarily a film to entertain and perhaps educate, not an documentary to teach us all.
Artemis Fowl (2020)
Brilliant. These amateur critics have no idea.
This film was absolutely fantastic. Never read the books but now seriously thinking of reading them. All these bad reviews are written by viewers who obviously have no clue what they are writing. These people saying Artemis is obnoxious are being small minded, he is not obnoxious, he isn't enjoying school because he isn't being challenged and the school aren't giving him a chance. Don't listen to the bad reviews and watch the film. If you don't get it, don't make it seem like a terrible film. Listen to the good reviews. if you have read the books and put a bad review, fair enough, but for me, somebody who has never read the books I'm seriously considering reading them because of the film.
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019)
A brilliant film
A film that can be enjoyed by children & adults. Loads of things to spot during the film that link to other sci-fi films. We've watched it three times now and discover things still.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Can't believe other viewers ratings!!
It was with some trepidation that I prepared to watch Toy Story 4. Would it be any good? It was dark, moments of pathos, humour, edge of the seats moments. I have watched thousands of films over the past 55 years, studied film making, scriptwriting, set building, photography & 3D design (the last two still actively involved on a daily business. Why do I mention this? It's because I am wondering if I am watching the same film as others who have given it such low scores. Perhaps they didn't want others to enjoy a good film, I simply at a loss to think of a valid reason. Do go and see it and make up your own minds. Fair enough if you don't think it's worthy of being in the same league as Toy Story 1, 2, 3 but give it a go. I think you will love it. Please note it has a few scary moments in it esp if you have a phobia of Automatonophobia
The Darkest Minds (2018)
A surprisingly good movie
I, like others, began to wonder if I was seeing the same film as those who had given it 1 or 2 stars. Don't be put off my those reviews. An interesting film with some good effects, an emotional script at times. My daughter came in and saw the last 10 mins and when film finished begged me to restart the film from the beginning........it was interesting enough to keep her away from the pc & Xbox which is an achievement.
Permanent (2017)
A strange quirky gem of a film
Absolutely loved this film with outstanding performances from Kira McLean (Aurelie) and Nena Daniels (Lydia). It's not a comedy like a Jim Carrey/Will Frerrel/Robin Williams film but a well written poignant comedy. I can understand why some people might be disappointed but give it a go and you might be pleasantly surprised just how good a film can be.
