Dalgliesh continues to hunt torture killer of Sally Jupp, the prime suspect seems to be far right extremist, Malcolm Proctor, who's vigorously questioned.
I know this novel pretty well, I've read it several times, I have to say I can hardly recognise it, it should have been detailed as 'very loosely based on..'
They've massively changed the novel, which definitely had a class element to it, that's been erased for a race element, and that's something of a shame, as a victim, Sally is just a little lost.
As with the first episode, it's not a favourite, but it's a decent adaptation of a great book. Is it me, or would this have worked better if it had been just one episode longer, it's such a deep story, it may have worked better if it were longer.
Bertie Carvel absolutely nailed it here, he's fantastic in the part, truly owning it.
Andrew Tiernan was very good as Proctor, perhaps the standout performance, excellent.

Krishna Mehta refuses to be pushed into a lucrative marriage with Lady Catherine Bowers, his affections lay elsewhere, with the maid, Sally Jupp. The night after a family party, in which Krishna refused to propose to Catherine, Sally is found dead.
The first of the Dalgliesh novels, and for my money it's perhaps the best of them, written way back in the 1960's, it's a great story.
Id it wasn't for the name Sally Jupp, you could be forgiven for having zero clue what this story was, it is massively altered, but I for one liked the changes, they didn't detract.
Previously adapted, of course with Roy Marsden, not a version I particularly cared for, I have to say that, and this, aren't a patch on the book.
It's very nicely produced once again, it looks great, I loved the music, it definitely has something of a vintage feel about it, it's certainly packed with atmosphere.
It definitely feels like we're into the 1980's now, who doesn't love a punk!
I'm not sure I'd say this as one of the better adaptations, but it's still heaps better than most of what's on the box right now.

Two stories of love, one, a war time romance, the other, a look at love in the present day, where the temptation of instant sex is perhaps a little too much for some.
Made 50 years after The 1967 Sexual Offences Act, this drama was big, and definitely well advertised. It was a little different for an LGBT drama to be quite so mainstream.
The first story is exquisite, a story of a war time romance that could never be, a story of passion, love and sadness, a society that prohibited Michael and Thomas from being together, resulted in so much unhappiness, the two men themselves and of course, poor Flora.
What makes the first episode work so incredibly well, is the insane chemistry between Oliver Jackson-Cohen and James McArdle, they're incredible together.
The second story, a modern day insight into the world of gay living, I didn't care for this second story quite so much, I didn't believe there was anything between Adam and Steve, there was no chemistry at all between Morris and Gyasi.
If I were basing it solely on the first episode, I'd be giving it a ten, without question, it's superb, I can't say the same about the second, it doesn't have the same impact.
