“The Terminal List” prequel series at Amazon Prime Video has cast Dar Salim in a key recurring guest star role, Variety has learned.

Salim has joined “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf” in the role of Mohammed “Mo” Farooq. He joins previously announced series lead Taylor Kitsch as well as cast members Chris Pratt, Jared Shaw, Tom Hopper, and Luke Hemsworth. Kitsch, Pratt, and Shaw will all be reprising the roles they played in “The Terminal List,” while Hopper will be playing Raife Hastings and Hemsworth will be playing Jules Landry.

Farooq is described as “An Iraqi Special Operations Forces (Isof) officer, formerly trained in the CIA Scorpions program. Mo was raised in a world of dictatorship and war. His mission is to strengthen his country and defend it against enemies without and within.”

Salim most recently starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the Guy Ritchie film “The Covenant,” which was released by Amazon and MGM Studios.

Denmark has submitted Nikolaj Arcel’s The Promised Land as its candidate for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

The epic historic drama stars Mads Mikkelsen as the real-life Ludvig von Kahlen, a former soldier who tries to make his fortune by taming the then wild and lawless heath of the Danish Jutland peninsula, so it could be turned over to cultivation following a declaration by King Frederik V.

The film world premiered at Venice and then headed to Telluride and Toronto, is currently screening at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and will next screen at the Zurich Film Festival, Filmfest Hamburg, Hamptons International Film Festival, and the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Between "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning," and "Fast X," 2023 might feel like the year of blockbusters blatantly split in half, but one major film beat them all to the punch a few years earlier: 2021's "Dune." Director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi/fantasy novel made the conscious choice to only cover the first half of the original book, leaving much of the remaining action for the sequel to worry about. Well, even though "Dune: Part 2" recently ended up delayed by several months well into 2024, we're still finding out more information about the sequel in drips and drabs.

In an awkward example of pre-planned marketing arriving with some exceedingly poor timing, Empire just dropped their shiny new magazine covers commemorating the now later-than-expected release of "Dune: Part 2." In a new interview excerpt, the outlet spoke to Villeneuve about what to expect from the sequel.

BAFTA and SAG Award nominee Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Denton Davidson about his process for portraying serial killer nurse Charles Cullen. Redmayne goes to truly dark depths for this role in the Netflix psychological drama. It’s a noticeable change of pace for the popular British actor who normally plays heroic figures on the big screen, including when he won the Best Actor Oscar for “The Theory of Everything” (2014).

Redmayne takes us behind the scenes on how the script for “The Good Nurse” first came to him, what it was like working with director Tobias Lindholm and co-star Jessica Chastain, and the film’s wild success on Netflix. The film centers on Amy Loughren (Chastain), a nurse who starts to believe that her colleague Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths and risks her own life to uncover the truth.

“The thing I liked so much about the film is that we see so often films about a serial killer or a story and its fetishized,” Chastain said while discussing why she joined the project. “You’d see him injecting the bags and I’ve always felt a little dirty watching that stuff. I don’t wanna celebrate or have the media glorify what happened to another human being. I wanna celebrate humanity, which is why I was excited about this.”

First a little warning. I had the good fortune to see The Good Nurse knowing absolutely nothing about it except it was a Netflix movie starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. I had no idea which one was even “the good nurse” of the title, and I was not familiar with the book it is based on, or even the fact it is actually a true story. For all I knew it was like a female version of Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor. Netflix set up a screening for me at a local screening room. I sat by myself for two hours stunned by what I was seeing slowly take place, a turn of events I did not see coming as I realized I had the same experience in some ways as a viewer as Chastain’s character, Amy Loughren, had in real life.

During a career of 16 years that spanned numerous East Coast hospitals since the late ‘80s, real-life nurse Charles Cullen confessed to murdering at least 29 patients with a fatal cocktail of drugs he dripped into his victims’ bloodstream. That figure was only his confirmed body count, however. As a title card suggests at the end of Tobias Lindholm’s shrewd and absorbing drama “The Good Nurse” — a Netflix original that just premiered at Toronto — the real number of his victims was predicted to be as high as a blood-curdling 400.

Hopping from one job to the next, the serial killer went undetected by the authorities, with his connection to the unusual deaths remaining as an open-secret suspicion at every facility he worked at. A true-crime picture whose chilling effects are generated without a whiff of the manipulation that often comes with such films, Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse watches as a veteran caregiver (Jessica Chastain) realizes her new best friend at work (Eddie Redmayne) may be killing their patients.

That fact is up front in loglines and promotional materials, which is a shame, because the very fine drama works even better for someone who walks in knowing only the stars’ and director’s names: Such a viewer — who might guess that the “good nurse” in question is Redmayne, innocently caught in a scandal of hospital bureaucracy — feels the drama’s heartbreak more than is possible otherwise. Either way, the picture is an assured English-language debut for Lindholm, a sometime Thomas Vinterberg collaborator and director of Danish films A War, A Hijacking and R.

“Samaritan” stars Stallone in his first lead superhero role since 1995’s embarrassing “Judge Dredd,” but he’s played the type many times before. Films like “Cobra” and the “Rambo” sequels have long presented the muscular star as a larger-than-life figure, standing tall against evil and kicking its ass for a third of a century. He may not have a long history of actually wearing tights but the role still fits.

Stallone plays Joe, a world-weary garbage man who keeps to himself and repairs old junk as a hobby. Javon Walton (“Euphoria”) co-stars as Sam, a young teen who is obsessed with Granite City’s superhero, Samaritan, and supervillain, Nemesis, who reportedly perished fighting each other decades ago.

A War director and Borgen writer Tobias Lindholm has struck a first-look deal with Chernobyl producer Sister and has set a Jeremy Strong-fronted 9/11 responders drama as his first project.

Lindholm has signed up to develop and produce scripted series with the production company run by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone.

The Best of Us is the first project to come out of the deal. Lindholm will write, direct and exec produce the series, which tells the story of the first responders of 9/11 and pays tribute to those impacted, relying on heavily researched accounts.

Succession star Strong, who has been developing the project with Lindholm from very early on, is attached to star and executive produce. The project is being developed in close collaboration with journalist Chris Smith, who has written extensively on September 11 for publications such as Vanity Fair and New York magazine.

“Aquaman” director James Wan has revealed the title to the upcoming sequel starring Jason Momoa in an Instagram post.

“The tide is rising,” Wan said.

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will open on Dec. 16, 2022.

The sequel will bring back star Jason Momoa as hero Arthur Curry opposite Amber Heard, with Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Dolph Lundgren.

James Wan directed the film, which brought in $1.13 billion at the worldwide box office and $332.9 million domestically when it opened ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend late last year, making it the first DC film to cross $1 billion globally since “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Wan and Peter Safran are producing the sequel, and frequent Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is writing “Aquaman 2.” He co-wrote the original film with Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, Beall and Wan.

Pilou Asbæk, the Danish actor best known for his stint as Euron Greyjoy in “Game of Thrones,” is in talks to join the cast of the DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. “Aquaman” sequel alongside Jason Momoa, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

It’s unclear what role Asbæk will play in the “Aquaman” film, and the plot is being kept under wraps.

James Wan is returning to direct the new film, and he will also produce with Peter Safran. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a writer on the original “Aquaman” and “The Walking Dead,” is writing the script.

Sisse Graum Jørgensen, the Zentropa producer behind Thomas Vinterberg’s BAFTA-winning, Oscar-nominated “Another Round,” spoke to Variety about working with Vinterberg, making her TV debut, as well as opportunities and challenges ahead for independent producers.

Graum Jørgensen is primarily known for her long and successful partnerships with some of the most celebrated filmmakers in Denmark, including Vinterberg and Susanne Bier, whose film “In a Better World” won an Oscar in 2011, Anders Thomas Jensen (“Riders of Justice”), Kristian Levring (“The Salvation”), Tobias Lindholm (“A War”), and Kim Fupz Aakeson (“Perfect Sense”). “A Taste of Hunger,” which is headlined by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) and Kathrine Greis-Rosenthal (“A Fortunate Man”), has sold to France (Kinovista) and Poland (Hagi Film).

The film has Coster-Waldau and Greis-Rosenthal as a power couple on the Danish gourmet scene who run the popular restaurant Malus in Copenhagen. The couple is willing to sacrifice everything to achieve their dream – a coveted Michelin star.

HBO has acquired the rights to “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s limited series regarding the 2017 murder of journalist Kim Wall. The premium cabler unveiled the trailer for the six-episode show on Monday.

“The Investigation” will explore the complex real-life investigation surrounding the murder of Wall, who boarded a submarine built by former entrepreneur Peter Madsen for an interview in 2017. The submarine was found sunken the following morning and Wall’s dismembered body parts were found throughout the area; Madsen was convicted of the murder in 2018 and sentenced to life imprisonment in a highly-publicized court case.

The Danish-language series will premiere on HBO on February 1.

HBO has acquired the Scandinavian limited series “The Investigation,” about the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.

The series will explore the complex real-life investigation surrounding Wall’s 2017 murder, which made international headlines around the world as one of the most notorious criminal cases in Danish media history.

In 2017, Wall went missing after she boarded a submarine to interview Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen in what became known as “The Submarine Case.” The Submarine was found sunken the morning after the August 10 interview and Madsen was charged, and later convicted, of Wall’s murder.

That esteemed contemporary sage Homer Simpson once observed that alcohol was “the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.” The idea behind that joke permeates “Another Round” (“Druk”), the latest from director Thomas Vinterberg (“Far From the Madding Crowd”), a film that centers on drinking to excess but winds up being more about mid-life crises and less a jeremiad about the evils of demon rum.

Working from an incisive and insightful screenplay he wrote with Tobias Lindholm, Vinterberg crafts another drama that presents the best and worst of human nature as paths to be explored. His characters don’t necessarily choose the right one, and sometimes we’re left to wonder which selection they’ve made, but Vinterberg — in marked contrast to his fellow Dogme 95 filmmaker Lars von Trier — at least concedes that redemption might exist.

TrustNordisk has closed a raft of deals on Christoffer Boe’s “A Taste Of Hunger,” the Danish romantic drama starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game Of Thrones”) and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal (“A Fortunate Man”).

The movie, now in post-production and set for a Feb. 25 release in Denmark, has inspired a virtual reality experience “A Taste of Hunger – VR” which is also directed by Boe and is being presented at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Venice VR Expanded program.

The film marks Tobias Lindholm’s English language feature directing debut. The Danish filmmaker previously oversaw “A Hijacking” and “A War.” The film centers on Charlie Cullen, a nurse who is regarded as one of the most prolific serial killers in history and was known by the moniker, “Angel of Death.” He is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of as many as 300 patients over 16 years. Redmayne will play Cullen and Chastain will play a nurse who begins to unravel the true scope of his crimes.

Scandi sales outfit TrustNordisk has picked up Christoffer Boe’s Danish feature A Taste Of Hunger, the romantic drama starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game Of Thrones) and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal (A Fortunate Man).

The film, which is in pre-production, will follow a couple who sacrifice everything to achieve the highest possible accolade in the culinary world – a Michelin star.

Director Boe, who also co-wrote the script with Tobias Lindholm (A War), has credits including 2003 feature Reconstruction, which won two prizes in Cannes.

Louise Vesth is producing the project for Danish outfit Zentropa. Her credits include Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and Nymphomaniac.

A Taste Of Hunger is being made in co-production with Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst, with support from the Danish Film Institute, Svenska Filminstitutet and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, in collaboration with TV 2 Danmark and Svt with development backing from the Creative Europe Media programme.

The BBC and Rtl have bought “The Investigation,” the upcoming drama about the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall. It comes from Tobias Lindholm, the writer-director behind Oscar-nominated picture “A War.”

Lindholm’s TV credits include Nordic hit “Borgen” and Netflix drama “Mindhunter.” Fremantle’s Miso Film is on production duty. Fremantle is distributing and closed the U.K. and German deals, meaning it has pre-sold the series to major free-tv broadcasters in Europe’s two largest markets. It will be targeting more deals on the show at Mipcom in Cannes, next week.

Six-part series “The Investigation” follows the complex investigation carried out by Jens Møller, the head of homicide for the Copenhagen Police, surrounding the murder of Wall. She was a freelance Swedish journalist who boarded a submarine to interview its owner, Peter Madsen. She was subsequently killed and entrepreneur Madsen faced a highly publicized trial and was convicted of her murder.

May el-Toukhy’s Sundance prize-winning “Queen of Hearts” has been selected as Denmark’s Oscar entry in the international feature film race.

“Queen of Hearts” beat out Michael Noer’s “Before the Frost” and “Daniel” by Niels Arden Oplev and Anders W. Berthelsen which had been shortlisted. The Danish Oscar committee is made up of representatives from the film industry and the Danish Film Institute.

Represented in international markets by TrustNordisk, “Queen of Hearts” world premiered at Sundance where it won the audience prize.

The film tells the story of Anne, a dedicated lawyer who lives what appears to be the picture-perfect life with her husband, Peter, and their twin daughters. When her estranged teenage stepson moves in with them, Anne’s escalating desire leads her down a dangerous path, jeopardizing both her career and family. That’s “Domino,” a couple of interesting set pieces in search of a reason to exist, from director Brian De Palma. For most of his career, De Palma has been hailed as a modern master of suspense, or at least a dynamite visual stylist. And although many of his films — including “Carrie,” “Blow Out” and “Dressed to Kill” — are now classics, even misfires like “Snake Eyes” and “Passion” usually have some bravura cinematic showpieces that make them worth watching.

Gustav Möller’s thriller “The Guilty” which won Sundance’s Audience Award in World Cinema, has been selected as Denmark’s official Oscar entry for best foreign language film.

Möller’s feature debut, “The Guilty” takes place over the course of a single night and centers on police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) who has just been demoted to desk work and answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman. The film follows Asger’s race against time to save the woman with the phone as his only tool.

On top of Sundance, “The Guilty” played at New Directors/New Films, as well as Seattle where it won Best Director and the Audience Award, and Rotterdam where it won the Audience Award. Magnolia Pictures will release the film on Oct.19 in 25 markets, including New York and Los Angeles, with a national rollout to follow.

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne are in talks to star in the thriller “The Good Nurse.”

The movie, which has been in development at Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures since 2016, centers on the serial killer/nurse Charles Cullen. Redmayne would portray Cullen and Chastain would play a nurse who helped track down Cullen after he killed as many as 40 patients before being arrested in 2003.

Bron Studios will produce and release the pic through Lionsgate.

The films selected for the 10th anniversary edition of the European Parliament’s Lux Film Prize have been revealed at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff).

At a packed event hosted at Karlovy Vary’s Hotel Pupp on Sunday (July 3), the 10 films were unveiled by Michaela Šojdrová, vice-chair of the committee on culture and education, Martina Dlabajová, vice-chair of the committee on budgetary control, Julie Ward and Bogdan Wenta, members of the committee on culture and education and Doris Pack, Lux Film Prize Coordinator.
