Netflix has had a mixed history with live-action adaptations of popular anime. The streaming giant has a dark past of butchering popular series like Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, and more.

But it seems to have struck gold with the One Piece 2023 live-action adaptation. With this hugely applauded series, it feels like Netflix might have finally figured out the formula for the perfect anime to live-action pipeline, but has it?

Netflix debuted the five-episode Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series in December 2023. Adapted from Yoshihiro Togashi‘s manga of the same name, the series made quite a splash after its release. Not only did it receive praise for its fight sequences, it was a refreshing addition to the live-action list on Netflix.

The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge has partnered with Film Independent to award 12 disabled filmmakers with grants to help them develop their short films into episodic series or feature films.

Grant recipients will have access to workshops, one-on-one mentorship and networking opportunities with industry leaders through the Film Independent grantee program. The grants were made possible by the Adobe Foundation.

“We are proud of the outstanding films produced over the past 11 years and I am grateful that the Challenge has provided a high-profile platform that has enabled many of our participants to go on to such prominent success,” said Nic Novicki, director and founder of the Edfc. “Thanks to the Adobe Foundation and Film Independent, we are able to provide our talented participants with the resources to take their projects to the next level. We can’t wait to see these projects continue to flourish on the big and small screens.

The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard was a huge public spectacle in 2022. The months-long trial showed accusations of abuse from both sides, along with other allegations. In the end, the jury ruled in favor of the Pirates of the Caribbean actor but the damages to their reputations were already done.

Of the many accusations Heard levied against her former husband, one included his alleged abuse over another actor. The Aquaman actress claimed that her then-husband hated a Marvel actor. James Franco, who starred as Harry Osborn in Spider-Man, worked with the actress twice and this was the reason behind Depp’s alleged hatred.

The dramatic defamation trial began on 11 April and continued till 1 June 2022, in Fairfax County, Virginia. The ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard put several allegations against each other, one major one was of abuse.

The HBO series Industry returns for a third season on Aug. 11, with Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harington joining the cast. The series follows a cast of characters caught up in the cutthroat world of high finance in London as they determine whether they will thrive or crumble under the pressure.

Rick and Morty: The Anime will be available on Max this month for fans looking for something to tide them over until Rick and Morty season 8.

Another notable new release this month is the documentary Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes. Formulated with newly recovered interviews and unprecedented access to the actor’s personal archive, this documentary claims to be Elizabeth Taylor’s story from her perspective.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.

It’s the very first day of December, and as you’re finishing up some holiday shopping, Netflix is already ahead of schedule with a fantastic gift for you – tons of fresh content that you’re not going to want to miss.

This isn’t unusual, of course, as the first day of any month is guaranteed to be the biggest for the world’s most popular streaming service. You can usually expect quite a bit of high-profile stuff, and today is no different with its wide selection of appealing new and returning movies and shows that encompass nearly every genre.

Among other things, some classic series have dropped multiple entries in their lineup, including Jurassic Park and its second sequel, as well as Tom Hanks’ The Da Vinci Code and its follow-up Angels & Demons. December is set to be an exciting month for Netflix subscribers and the first day alone will bring with it a large selection of movies and shows to add to your ever-growing list of content to watch. For instance, there’s Tom Hanks’ The Da Vinci Code and its sequel Angels & Demons, all 10 seasons of the beloved sci-fi series Stargate Sg-1, and popular Adam Sandler flicks 50 First Dates and Little Nicky, among many others.

But it’s not only the big name titles that’ll be vying for your attention, as Netflix is also adding a number of overlooked flicks that are hoping to get a second life on the service and one such film that you may want to keep an eye on if you’re in the mood for an action thriller with some solid talent in it is 3 Days to Kill.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.

For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.

But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

Somehow, December starts on Tuesday even though it only feels like yesterday that the world was turning as normal and everyone was going about their business as usual before the Coronavirus pandemic came along and changed everything. As is the case every time we enter a new month, though, the various streaming services on offer are adding a whole host of new titles to their libraries and over the next seven days, Netflix has more than 50 movies and TV shows heading our way.

We’ve now got just a few days left of November, so it’s time to take a look ahead at everything that’s headed to the major streaming networks in December. As it’s Christmas, Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video have extra special hauls ready to gift to their subscribers this holiday season, with literally hundreds of new movies and TV shows dropping over the course of the month.

All the various sites – excepting Disney Plus – are serving up a ton of newly licensed films on December 1st. Netflix, for instance, is adding such classics as E.T., Little Nicky and the first three Jurassic Parks. Meanwhile, HBO Max is offering up The Shawshank Redemption, Shaun of the Dead and a bunch of Final Destinations, while Hulu and Prime Video, which share a lot of the same movies, are treating users to a host of iconic...

After Taken became a surprise box office success that reinvented Liam Neeson as cinema’s most bankable action star on the cusp of his 60th birthday, many actors of a similar age suddenly pricked up their ears. When audiences proved so willing to embrace Neeson’s Bryan Mills throat-punching his way across Europe, a slew of titles swiftly arrived to spawn the so-called ‘geriaction’ subgenre.

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp were at the forefront of this, hiring ageing stars to lead the production company’s standard B-level efforts, although results were decidedly mixed. For instance, John Travolta’s From Paris with Love remains an underrated gem, but the same can’t be said for Kevin Costner’s 3 Days to Kill.

With just a few days of November left, we’ve now got a look at what’s coming to Netflix across December and the following breakdown gives us a strong idea of what to expect from the streaming giant next month. If you’ve seen even just one mid-budget and completely forgettable action movie in the last fifteen years, then there’s a distinct possibility that Luc Besson may have been involved.

The writer, director and producer has delivered some solid genre work behind the camera with the likes of La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, but his EuropaCorp production company made their name churning out a series of generic shoot em’ ups that convinced a roster of A-list talents to try their luck at becoming action stars.

IMDb TV is now the streaming home of “Chicago Fire” seasons 1-6 — offering catch-up viewing for fans of the Dick Wolf-produced NBC primetime hit starting Friday (Dec. 6) for free.

It’s the biggest single licensing pact to date for IMDb TV, which is Amazon’s bid to capture share in the ad-supported VOD space. Terms aren’t being disclosed. IMDb acquired U.S. rights to “Chicago Fire,” part of the Wolf’s triumvirate of Windy City dramas along with “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med,” from Wolf Entertainment and NBCUniversal’s Universal Television.

In addition, IMDb TV will offer all five seasons of “Friday Night Lights,” beginning Dec. 31, on a nonexclusive basis, also from Universal TV. All episodes of the high-school football drama, which has proven to be a perennial fan-favorite, are currently available on Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

Matt Reeves will unleash the diva in Hailee Steinfeld in Netflix's upcoming feature Idol.

Hell nos and headphones are paying for the new kid. Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in and produce Idol, a musical drama for Netflix. The feature film will be produced by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves's 6th & Idaho production company, according to Variety.

Netflix beat out Universal and Paramount for the project. Reeves will not direct the film. He is currently developing The Batman film at Warner Bros. Pictures, and the science fiction series Recursion for Netflix.

The screenplay was written by Matt King. Federal, Republic Records' film division, already has a deal to release the original soundtrack. Steinfeld, who hit the charts with singles like “Love Myself” and “Starving,” may also be involved in the music.

Netflix has teamed with director McG for alien invasion sci-fi adventure film Rim of the World.

McG, otherwise known as Joseph McGinty Nichol, has been keeping himself busy, both as a director of action flicks and as a television producer for, up until recently, shows like Supernatural, Fox's beleaguered, currently on-the-bubble Lethal Weapon, and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, and is currently developing a TV series adaptation of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger spy actioner, True Lies. However, the fruits of his film directing resume keep heading to streaming giant Netflix, and one such project, called Rim of the World, will be no exception.

Brian De Palma action thriller Domino will see Game of Thrones stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice Van Houten opposite one another.

Legendary director Brian De Palma, who amongst other iconic efforts, directed the 1996 inaugural film in the lucrative-as-ever Mission: Impossible film franchise, returns to the action thriller table with Domino. The film is headlined by a duo Game of Thrones cast members whose characters we can't wait to see share the screen on the series before its imminent end, namely the Kingslayer himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and the Red Witch herself, Carice Van Houten.

De Palma’s directorial offering Domino – not to be confused with the late Tony Scott’s 2005 Keira Knightley-starring bounty hunter biopic – is being distributed in the U.S. by Saban Films.
