I must confess. My guilty television viewing habits of the past have frequently included The Mentalist, a formulaic yet witty dramatic detective series with a subtle but prevalent comedic underbelly. The series features a rebellious but brilliant mind gone rogue to fulfill his own mission — rules be damned — like House M.D., but with murder investigations instead of medical mysteries. But, let me get back on track…
A while back, I had a chance to see a Fantastic Fest screening. Ultimately, my schedule demanded I sacrifice seeing this film in favor of another. For some time, I kicked myself. Besties is written by Rebecca Perry Cutter, who also happens to be a writer on The Mentalist. This also marks the feature film debut for Cutter as a director. This intrigued me, however I managed to learn a valuable lesson as well. It’s a lesson I’ve learned, and likewise forgotten...

If Fantastic Fest screens a movie made by women with females in the lead, I'll be there. (Okay, unless it screens at midnight or is excessively violent/gory. They don't call me the Film Festival Wuss for nothing.) So Besties was on my radar from the start, and it did not disappoint.
Sandy (Olivia Crocicchia) is a lumpish 14-year-old girl, teased mercilessly by classmates, who idolizes the girl next door -- her former babysitter Ashley (Madison Riley), a senior, blonde and perfect. When Sandy's dad goes out of town for the weekend, she asks if Ashley can "babysit" so she can hang out with the most popular girl in school. Ashley agrees, because what girl wouldn't want access to an empty house for the weekend? She parties, she ignores Sandy ... and then Ashley's ex-con ex-boyfriend Justin turns up, bad news personified. Ashley overreacts, and next thing we know, the girls...

We at FM always keep an eye out for smaller upcoming horror fare, and The Besties, a thriller from Rebecca Perry Cutter (The Mentalist), fits the bill. We’ve got some fresh stills and clips (one edited, one unedited) for this film that depicts a character study of hero worship gone bad. We’ll be covering this more in the coming days, but for now I’ll leave you to the PR:

A few years back, I attended an anniversary screening for Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, with the cast and filmmaker in attendance for a post-film Q&A. A young girl in attendance asked Dekker whether he felt any reservations upon re-viewing it twenty years later, in having one of his young characters call another a faggot. It was an honest question that deserved an honest question in response. Dekker: “Ma’am, may I ask what your name is?” Attendee: “It’s ______” Dekker: “Okay,_______, if you don’t mind me asking, have you ever been a twelve year old boy?” I feel like any negative comments I might have towards Rebecca Perry Cutter‘s Besties would result in someone saying the same thing to me, just reversing the gender. I am not much of a fan of Besties, but I also was never a timid 14-year-old girl struggling to break out of her shell. I...

While Rebecca Cutter's indie thriller Besties may occupy a somewhat different niche than most films selected for Austin's Fantastic Fest it does, nonetheless, look like a compelling bit of work. Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:
